Hard to say which was Gene's Finest Hour? I'm 52 ad was brought up on his fantastic talent even as a kid and fortunate enough to see him give a masterful performance truely full of emotion in the fitting venue of the Royal Concert centre, Nottingham, just days before his stunning and tragic death. RIP Gene. Perhaps equalled, but never bettered.
Some of the greatest music came from this era of time, and those of us who are true music lovers, will never forget the great oldies...when music was music, and had meaning. Another great one has passed, but never forgotten.
a ''golden classic'' of genes in my book one of his best , but then he had so many great tracks. sadly like so many of the greats from his time passed on far to early.
When a good singer dies, the memory lingers on within those who remember, new talent comes and replaces them, that is the way the world turns.Good song though.
Gene Pitney was a musical master,,,just listen to the "Orchestra",,the music is sensational along with the lyrics...I think Gene Pitney was one of the 60's most under rated entertainers,,,when in retrospect he was so ahead of his time..."Great Entertainer"...
Talented beyond compare and from what I have read, a very nice man. He is so missed. I don't know what it was about his delivery that just dipped into your soul and shook you to the core, but few have that talent no matter how good the voice. He had both.
In a couple of weeks you'll be able to hear this song on my veetle channel. I host a 60's countdown similar to the old Casey Kasem shows. Look in Veetle's music section for the Current & Classic Radio Shows and the week of 5-23-11 will have a countdown from 1966 with this song. The show airs weekdays 12pm and 12am EST.
this is one of my favourite songs. We saw him sing this on a number of occasions, the last time being only a couple of days before he died so tragically. His passing has left a massive hole in our lives.
57 was old but a few short years ago and 57 is old if your 16 but believe me when you finaly get close to being that age let me assure you 57 is young young young young young
@gotch09 There is no time limit to music that is profound and a God given voice to project it. Pure heaven to the ears. That's Gene Pitney. All his songs were about love. I'm thankful to have been in the same era as his music. I was about 13 for my first Pitney experience ( I'm gonna be strong) and I was hooked. I knew I was hearing a voice that I never heard before/ or since. He stands alone.
@mikeletz One of the "best". He kept working bc he wanted to, not that he had to, but he had to sing. I often wonder if he pushed himself too much in his later years. Takes a lot of energy to perform. Then there's Tony Bennett who is still at it in his 80's. Go figure. Have a wonderful weekend. It's harvest moon lol
@Tonithenightowl Hi Toni! Always nice to hear from you. We sharealot of favorite singers. I am listening to Lesley Gore right now. "You Don't Own Me". You have a great weekend also. Mike.
@mikeletz That is one of my favorite hits by Lesley. It was the banner song of every independent teen girl lol. We wanted a boyfriend but we didnt' want to be owned. Sauce for the goose had to be sauce for the gander. Then came marriage and all that went out the window. Oh well, 36 yrs later and I'm still married. We just have to let them think they own us. Wink Wink
@Tonithenightowl Great comment Toni! It is something how different songs bring back certain memories. I've been married 36 years also! Time Flies as they say. Have a great weekend!!!!
@gotch09 oh my goodness I hope when you posted that I answered you lol if not I'm so sorry You have a few yrs on me I'm 57 and I'm sticking to that till January, but we are not getting older, just wiser. Isn't that a crock ?
Yes it is colin! We are genetically created to live like all mammels to 8 times our development to adulthood. The fact that the medical establishment and our 'rulers' want us out of the way, don't collect social security, or attain the wisdom to learn the rules of the 'game'. Our spend a 'fortune' to survive. There are seven stages of man, each lasting 15 yrs. Not looking to argue with someone who likes Gene, you have good taste.
Ive been listening to gene since these songs were on the air, . . . and I still feel the same , the greatness will never be surpassed , ever, . . . he was gods gift to us, . . . .
I can identify with this song, because although I'm called "The Queen of Karaoke," with over 142 self-made costumes, it gets 'very lonely' after the performances, whether on TV, radio, parties, casinos, etc.
@tweasha I feel sad that I didn't know too much about him while he was still alive. I only knew "Town Without Pity." Thanks to YouTube, I learned more and more of his songs. I have a new favorite singer.
all the talent in the last 40 years will NEVER be equaled these days they last a year at most, im glad i was born when i was , to grow up with these talented singers...
The reason why music is so forgettable today is that it all sounds the same. It's all generic, electronic heartless crap that is about making money. There is no soul or love in the song. They're churned out like cheap toys out of a Chinese toy factory. They're only meant to last until something newer and 'better' comes along...and the cycle repeats.
I honestly believe that in the past 10 years, the gap between 'music' and 'noise' has become almost indistinguishable...
I was very young when Gene Pitney was around, but I remember stealing my sister's records & played them over & over. There is no other with a voice as unique as Gene's. God how he is missed!

I think it was just this that kept Gene grounded. Adulation is one thing, someone who loves you no matter what is another.
