  • Singing this in real life to get a guy? I'll be, it DOES work...

  • love this song both madonnas and hers

  • I think comparing Elaine to Madonna is pointless. Madonna looked better on film than Elaine would have, and her voice was much softer. I think Ken Russell described Elaine Paige as "Barbara Windsor on speed" when he was asked to direct her in a planned film version of EVITA in the 80s (he apparently favoured Liza Minelli and Kim Wilde) David Essex probably could have played Che on film though.

  • my favourite version of this song!

  • WHO WROTE THIS SONG? N OT LLOYD WEBBER?

  • my favorite version of the song :)

  • I never comment on videos, but what the hell is this?

  • 1 of her catchiest songs by far!

  • Evita rocks, its so beautifully written...the movie is great too, a visual treat.

  • I honestly thought I was the only person saved this clip. I loved this song before I knew this was from Evita. Thanks for the flashback!

  • OMg I remember seeing this as a KID but I didn't know it was THE Elaine Page singing on the Hudson Brothers show!! Because of This song I got totally into Evita and Musical Theatre in General.. funny how we are influenced as kids.

  • She sounds like Kate Bush

  • How very fortunate for her and her career that she was being knobbed by Tim Rice. Now listen to Linda Lewis doing the same number.

  • She is so young here!!! I actually think she sings better now...better quality to her voice..no matter what..she's wonderful!

  • This is one my favorite songs of all time!

So simple and so recognizable, this is what truly great music is about. Elaine's voice is so unfaked when she sings, so strong and so vulnerable at the same time. Unique, true genius...

  • I wish there were more clips of Bonkers on here.

  • madonna can act, but only if shes playing herself.

  • I really like this version!

  • if you're despered, you're not soft and delicate. this video is a movie, and elaine is acitng- madonna is a bad actress, so she couldn't sing it like this....

  • loving the coments here, this exactly what this site is for, but i shall say, don't forget elaine was the first person to play the role on stage and it made her a star over night, and no i haven't forgotten that julie covington was the first person to sing the part. the film is a very different animal to the stage, and very difficult to compare the 2, personally i love both. love u all xx

  • Why are you people comparing Elaine to Madonna?... Madonna's good for pop-loving people... whilst Elaine appeals to Broadway-lovers... much like LuPone...

As for my opinion, I say Elaine owns this song... She ties with Patti... 'cause there are some songs Patti's better at and there are some songs Elaine's better at, too...

however, comparing her to Madonna isn't quite very charming.. very unrefined judgment.. they have different genres,

  • madonna was softer because she does not even have a quarter of the voice Elaine has

  • Comment removed

  • I disagree. Elaine is a unique and exciting performerand Madonna are both very different . Elaine could not have made 'vogue' or 'music' anymore than Madonna could have sung Evita live 8 times a week as Elaine did.

  • While I think that comparing Madge and Elaine are like comparing apples and oranges... Madonna could certainly pull off performing live 8 times a week. Have you noticed what she's been doing lately? at 51 no less!

  • @findjustin You should hear what Elaine's been doing lately and at age 62 no less. Let's see if Madonna can sing at that age!

  • @earlady66 Like I said (11 months ago, haha) if Madonna can pull of a world tour that only a well trained athlete could do, and at the age of 51 no less, I think the ol' gal will be going for years to come. I think that's a certainty especially since she signed a 160 million dollar deal with Live Nation a few years ago. Is she going to magically lose her voice in a few years? I don't get ya…

  • i actually find this quite enjoyable. taking a song out of one context and moving it into a completely different if even opposite context is hard to do and this seemed seemless

  • Oh I agree, this song is awesome no matter which context it is set.

Elaine looks beautiful in this piece.

  • this is bizarre!!!

  • "My name's Lance, don't miss your chance".. HAHAHAHA

  • Patti LuPone -> Evita for life!! woop

  • i think madonna sang this song with much more passion in evita. i know they're different styles but madonna was spot on with it.

  • you'd even make a comparison?

  • yes, madonna was much better, i know you can't compare elaine page to madonna, i mean no one compares to madonna but i do like both artists but madonna sang this version much better (in my opinion) so please don't bash me for having an opinion!

  • By no means am I trying to bash you! I just don't think you can take this rendition very seriously. She sings this in (a pick up bar), plus backed by three men (all professional comedians.) To make a comparison with someone singing it seriously (Madonna) isn't fair to Elaine Page when she is singing it in a comic note. Keep posting your opinions. You do it in a courteous way. You obviously think out what you have to say. I respect you for that!

  • i appreciate what you are saying, i know how well elaine paige sings, i've not got a comprehensive knowledge of her back catalogue but i have obviously heard her sing and she's a national treasure. i just personally think madonna sang this version brilliant, she was born to play evita, as a lifetime fan of madonna, she nailed it with evita. madonna did infact earn a grammy for "you must love me" and a golden globe for her portrayal of eva peron. i just think she was great in this role.

  • glad we got that cleared up! I don't know why it didn't come through as a direct reply?

  • Patti will always be the ebst eva but this is great. I love the reworking of the scene (not that this would work in an actual production of evita) but its nice to see such a romantic song outside of a military concert.

  • the best evita

  • I used to Watch "Bonkers" when I was in Middle School.

  • The 2nd guy (with the laugh) is sooo sexy!!

  • this just so suits elaine`s voice, and she puts such attitude into it

  • What is this clip actually from?

  • "The Hudson Brothers Comedy Hour" Summer fill-in for Tony Orlando & Dawn show, ABC on Wednesday nights in the early/mid 70's. Pretty good show back in the day.

  • Thanks for the info, this is quite a rarity then!

  • Actually, this clip is from the Hudson Brothers half hour syndicated show "Bonkers." From 1978/79.

  • Thanks for the correction. It was a little hard to keep up with the Hudson's and their shows back then. LOL

  • I love Elaine Paige. She is such a multi-talented singer who can handle just about any big role. Madonna doesn't even close to the talented Ms. Paige.

  • "young"? Elaine is hardly an OAP here...

  • Are you referring to the 'I prefer Madonna's sweet young voice" comment?

  • Ya.

  • THIS TOTALLY FREAKS ME OUT, can't figure out what's not grotesque about it

  • your comment .. !

  • Elaine Paige is just the greatest!!

    This performance is so cute!

  • yes, you're soooo right:) Love her saoooooooooooo much!! <3

  • Elaine Paige is fabbb here!

    love it and her!

  • Bill Hudson produced two kids with Goldie Hawn, Kate and Oliver. They had an acrimonious divorce and Kate and Oliver don't really have much of a relationship with him. They consider Kurt Russell more their father. Pretty dysfuntional. Bill Hudson later married Cindy Williams, of "Laverne and Shirley" and had two kids with her. They stayed married a long time, but they too divorced.

  • this videos greta elaine paige is so young in this video shes great i love her

  • this reminds me........

  • "I'm not talking of a hurried night, a frantic tumble and a shy goodbye" (Ha Ha). Elaine paige is great.

  • I love her voice, this song would e a lot better if it were set somewhere else

  • I love Elaine Paige!!

  • This clip is probably from "Bonkers" a show the Hudson Brothers did circa 1979 in the UK, ("Evita" premiered in '78 in the West End thus it couldn't have been their '74 variety show.) The Hudson Brothers were a musical act and had a primetime variety show in the States in '74 and a Saturday morning show about '75 or so. They never quite made it. One of them, Bill Hudson, is possibly best known as having been married to Goldie Hawn, and is the father of actress Kate Hudson.

  • LOVE Elaine! Can anyone enlighten me as to who The Hudson Brothers are? lol

  • Goldie Hawn was married to one of ther Hudsons...thus Kate Hudson

  • There were a musical group consisting of three brothers, Bill, Mark and Brett. In the seventies they had a summer variety series and a Saturday morning kid's show "Razzle Dazzle", which is kind of a cult favorite now. They had one hit "So You Are A Star". They were teen idols and their tv comedy antics kind of ruined them as a serious rock group. And one last thing: they were REALLY cute.

  • totally like 1975 really really 70's smell the weed..

  • holy god...bonkers! i seem to recall another sketch on this episode where she played a variation on maid marian from robin hood?!

  • I love this song, she would sing it great if it weren't in some...cheesy bar lmao. xx

  • what an amazing video, i have no idea where u got it from but glad u posted it.!

  • more of elaine paige, pls! :)

  • This made my day! A great video! Which programme is this from?

  • Wonderful - please post any more Elaine Paige stuff you might have!

  • Bizzarely strange, but i love it!this was Elaine Paige in her prime!
