Guess what? You already were a liberal. Liberals believe that the federal government should control our lives through legislation (for you that is laws). Conservatives believe that gay marriage and religious issues should be debated at the local and state level. Abortion is taking ones life away. Also, at least in a cultural sense, there is no separation between church and state. There is little to no chance of an openly atheist individual ever being elected President, for example. As a nation America has a hell of a long way to go before it ever achieves a true separation of church and state, neutrality towards religion (no special exceptions and churches should be taxed like anywhere else) and a secular tolerance of individuals without regard to religious affiliation.

I also support pre-maritial sex. Marriage is not the only way to stay commited to someone, and marriage doesnt mean babies. No Sex before Marriage programs are rampant in the Bible Belt, and they are sick. Of course commitment means commitment, and only have sex or a baby when you are physically and mentally ready, and want to. My parents never married, but we live in a fine household, and they are committed to each other fine.

The best option now I suppose would be to become as energetically independent as pragmatism would allow, and then to pour significant amounts of resources and/or revenue into alternative energy research.
