Bolt on necks have nothing to do with sustain. In fact, bolt on guitars have better sustain than both neck thru and set neck guitars, all things being equal. However, the issue of neck heel comes into play when dealing with a bolt on guitar. That's the main reason why neck thru guitars exist.
