  • Video too short. That left hand is one of many ways. Great piano player but Jools is only doing what the great practitioners of years ago have done. This isnt sour grapes but rhythm and blues has been around for yonks. I would like to have seen the right hand patterns. Perhaps another time?

  • I love Jool's TV shows (Later and Hootenanny), and his piano skills are out of this world, and I'd love to see him live at some point (and I've seen about 5 of the acts that he's had on his show in real life)

  • What a way to learn piano - from one of the all time boogie woogie greats

  • This is how they audition males for boy bands.

  • Aw, Jools is so patient with him!

  • another lesson learned: pianoplayers write their lyrics on the BACK of their hand ;)

  • 2:17 FUUCK

  • I quite like the background piano... what's wrong with it?

  • what's the deal with being nasty here, i think he did quite well, if jools holland was even playing a piano near me i'd stop whatever i was doing coz he's that good

  • thumbs up for the retarded reporter :D

  • boogie woogie :)

  • That reporter is so tone deaf... Is he related to Westlife?

  • Jools Holland is a master at what he does

  • @catman103

I SO agree! Where would we be without Jools - especially his FABULOUS New Year Shows! (just finished watching) New Year just wouldn't be the same without them... Hope he lives forever! I always think what a great load of entertainment for anyone who might be alone at this time of year. Love him!

  • I met him tonight!

  • does anybody know how to do that little roll thing that jools did?

  • Jools Holland is so cool. I wish he was my dad!

  • JOOLS ROX,THE MAN IS A LEGEND

  • omg i would be in awe if i got to meet let alone play with jools holland !!! wouldnt it be so embarrasing though if you constantly kept going wrong and didnt have a clue X) because he's such a good pianist

  • How cool is that .....to be taught and be playing with Jools. I know its only a lefthand, and a for a minute or so, but it still fits the definition, for some claim to fame :) lol

  • If you want to learn from the best. Learn from Dr John, he'll teach you what real rhythm is over in N'awlins

  • that was great, thank you for up-loading.

  • Ha ha ha lol

  • BB King think's he's one of the best.

But that's just the opinion of some old guitar player from the south.

  • Roystothecoolkid...Wow, you are brilliant! "That left hand is easy". It's the first lesson for a guy who doesn't play piano...it's SUPPOSED to be easy.

  • that left hand is easy

  • Brilliant...Good ol Uncle Dave !!!!

  • Great musicians can make music with anybody, and are usually eager to do so, at anytime. Jools is awesome.

  • Very good, Im learning boogie woogie at the moment, loookout people Im gonna be a boogie beast to rival Jools YEAH

  • thats the first thing i learned....still playin it

  • Jeezus . thats the first left hand my father showed me when i was 8 or 9 yrs old . Shame i didnt get as good as JH. lol.

  • for a few seconds he was jamming with one of the best..............lucky man....

  • u do sound like a cunt. haha

  • well fine, and if you like him, then great, I dont mind at all, im just saying that he really isnt a great pianist, and if you think so then you havent really ever checked any out

  • hes actually very good but he has never had music lessons or read music or anything, he just feels the music, I have noticed he does cheat with his playin but that doesnt matter, i saw his show last year and it blew me away, can you do better?

  • ok, just to clarify, i feel bad for what I said, because I dont like to put other musicians down, it just annoys me when people see Jools Holland and say "oh he's one of the greatest". The same applies to Kenny G, or anyone like that.

Jools Holland does what he does, and brings a lot of pleasure to a lot of people, so great for him. I mean that. I just wanted to protest about people calling him "the very best" because when it boils down to it, he's really not a great pianist...

  • I totally disagree, who are you comparing him to?! And in what sense?! He's a fine exponent of boogie woogie and all the popular styles (and he happens to be my favourite). I've yet to hear a piano player who sounds as good as Jools Holland. Yeh there are those who are technically better but what does that actually mean?! NOTHING!! His feel for his instrument is flawless! There is no-one better!

  • look dude, if you love Jools Holland then great! Everyone has different tastes, that's fine, but to say I've yet to hear a piano player who sounds as good as Jools just shows that you've not listened to many piano players. There is "no-one better" because you obviously haven't listened to who is out there.

I'm not trying to be a nasty cunt, I'm just trying to be realistic here.

  • If you like this kind of thing then check out the first track on Jason Moran's Modernistic, or Keith Jarrett- You Took Advantage of Me, off the album My Foolish Heart. Two examples off the top of my head...

  • I agree. Don't get me wrong, Jools IS an amazing piano player and he does sound great. But i've heard many other pianists who sound just as good, if not better.

    Herbie Hancock?

Lang Lang 'sounds' amazing as well.

I'm not going to write a huge list, but there are countless more i could add to it. Jools is great, he sounds great, but if you havent heard any better, then you need to broaden your musical horizon a little because there are some absolute gems out there to find ;)

  • I think in saying I think Jools sounds the best I sound like someone who'se just picked the most obvious choice and never listened to anything else... this ain't the case! I'm very literate in the world of jazz piano but I know what I like. Herbie Hancock?! Jools runs cirlces around him in my opinion. Herbie has a more complex inventive technique but that does little to excite me. Jools' gospel blues barrelhouse boogie sound is far superior. Herbie Hancock, Art Tatum... nah, prefer Jools.

  • See my other comments to see what i mean in more detail.

  • fair enough, whatever. I cant be bothered to argue with someone who thinks that Jools runs circles around Herbie Hancock. Sigh.

And I dont really care for Art Tatum. Like yourself, I like music.

  • I think it depends on what your definition of what makes a piano player better than another exactly is... you are clearly someone who is very closed minded when it comes to art and reguards the best only in terms of technical ability (of which Jools is far from the best), if this is the case then it would only ever be pianists like Art Tatum who would ever be considered. I can assure you I have listened to many pianists and no-one ever makes me feel as good as Jools! So...

  • ...that's why I feel, personally for me, he is "the best". That is the joy of the arts! Art cannot be defined as good or bad based alone on technical ability. Its how that particular artist's (be it musician, poet, actor, writer) affects an individual. And for me Jools feels better than any other pianist I have encountered! And i've listened to alot. Its the way he plays, his feel, his soulfullness, his technique is my favourite and in my opinion the best!! You are not wrong! Neither am i.

  • Check out Big Maceo Merriweather, see the real thing.

  • he did have lessons, he learnt music theory from a teacher at school and that's what gave him what he needed to take off, how do you think he writes and arranges pieces for his band without being able to read music?

  • He cannot sight read. He personally doesn't arrange pieces for his band, he and the rythm section learn the music by ear and then a variety of different people write the charts for the brass etc. But he did study music theory so he knows his chords etc... reguardless the man is a GENIUS!! Best boogie woogie/blues/rock 'n' roll/pop piano player working today!

  • Look at the concentration on that man's face!!

  • that guy is so lucky to have a few minutes with the master, what i'd give to be in his shoes.

  • argh, turn that piano in the back off! :D

  • absolutely! well said.

  • Lol, I bet that reporter had to practise off screen alot :D

  • Jools is right, that left hand riff is mystical, I saw this vid then just had to get on my keys to try it out and its so easy and sounds so wicked; I just need to learn some right hand riffs now; you got a minute or two to spare jools? :p

  • My first piece to

  • thanks

  • Nice to see Jools Holland wearing black. What a refreshing change.

  • hahahahaha

lol no but i do love jools he went to my lil brother and sisters primary school

not at the same time that would make me like old

  • i would trade jools for my dad...in a second
