@marcelle215 Sometime after the 1984 competitive season the bars were moved a greater distance from each other. You can't bounce your lower body off the low bar anymore, instead gymnasts move back and forth between the high bar and the low bar (which tends to get neglected.)
@MelleAndKev I knew that...I just seems that less risks seem to be taken now on the uneven bar routines. I was just wondering if new rules were added to decrease the chance of injury.
Interesting how both Olga and Nadia gained a lot of weight after their famous respective year in the olympics. That's the downfall of becoming famous, you don't have time to train anymore.
So much different than today. More creative and unique, but less physically challenging and less pushing the boundaries of what typical mankind can do.
What did she place on this event? Unless that is a mistake with that bit of stalling on the low bar, I would think that this would beat Theodora Ungreanu's routine.
@MTVMANN the stalling on the low bar is a mistake. i've seen her AA bars routine and she only went back and forth once and then went right back up to the high bar
@IFlipxo96 blame USGF and FIG. They're the ones who decided how gymnastics should be. I am upset at the changes myself. I loved the gymnasts from the 50's to the 80's. After 1990 gymnastics was losing it's beauty.
@queerfish1 yes, gymnastics is losing its beauty. but i am still in it on a level 7 almost 8. i still love it even though it is losing everything that has made it what it really is. in the 60's the bar routines were amazingly difficult. my favorite gymnast still to this day is Nadia. She was and will always be the power and height of the strength and beauty of gymnastics.
@queerfish1 how is this the fault of USGF??? they have nothing to do with the scoring change or how gymnastics is run. The scoring change went into effect because of a score gotten in the 2004 Olympics by Aleksei Nemov, not because of anything the US did.
the girls of today cannot do this because the bars have been spaced so far apart now. Shawn Johnson already has a disadvantage and has to work really hard on bars because she is a tiny lady.
that was fricken amazing! why can't any of the girls do this kind of stuff now? All the routines I see now are boring and seem pretty safe. I mean, there are some moves that are alright but in general, I am not pleased. They're all the same moves over and over.
@WhyAreTheyBlinking i totally agree. when they got rid of the compulsories after the 1996 olympics they ruined the sport imo. there is no originality, no artistry and it looks like people stopped thinking about the form and started to think more about power and difficulty instead of power and difficulty combined with artistry and originality.
@mrsTorrard88 I know right? I think it should be an option to move the bars closer together so that if you want to do a routine like Olga's you can. The Olympic Gymnastics have gone to waste, for sure.
@irafa2 like williespade said it was because of the loss of rhythm at one point but she got deducted way to much even though in these days it was still all about rhythm especially weird because nelli kim got the same score for falling off the bars : /
Question to all gymnastic experts: what's the name of the move where she is standing on the high bar and doing a flip backwards catching the high bar again? Looks kind of scary!
its sad now that gymnastics is more about power and tubling ability more than grace like it was back in the 70's and 80's. its still really fun to watch now. but it just kind of makes me sad when olga does her backflip on beam and there all like :wow thats incredible!! hardly anyone can do that" when now its like most olympic gymnasts can do that and much much more
When I see Olga at this Olympics, her face looks so strained and sad. I think she was all used up & exhausted by then & in alot of pain from injury. She paid alot for being the used to develop a new style of gymnastics, even if it did make her world famous.
I like this exercise, especially how 1 skill flows into the next. She got a little stuck on the low bar, but I like watchin Olga on bars more than any other event!
i always thought she did get stuck on the low bar but then later i think it was part of the new routine. cos in 1972 she had the flip then transition to the low bar back to the high bar. i think she changed that part in this olympics.
gymnastics is so convention today. you would never see a girl stand on the high beam and flip off of it today. is it because of the judges or are the stunt they perform to dangerous. ( i also think the bars were closer together)
I agree - a lot of the time i wouldn't even call it 'dance'. more like, strike a few poses 3/1 spin - pose - leap - pose - tumble etc etc. gymnastics has lost it's charm.
those old routines are so cool!! are they easier or harder than the new ones? i wouldn't know, im not a gymnast. but i can tell that the gymnasts back then could do these moves because the bars were closer together. nowadays they're far apart so they can swing their whole body through, but obviously can't do these moves where they catch their hips on the low bar.
to us, a transition from high bar to low bar that they did in the 70's would have been extremely hard and to them, a very commonly seen Pac Salto would be extreme.
No two routines were alike in those days. Nadia, Ludmilla and Olga had entirely different release moves. Only major skill (in those days) shared was Nadia and Ludmilla's full turn release skill on the high bar. Of course Nadia's came after her Comaneci Salto...so entirely different.

Its not specifically the Thomas Salto that paralyzed her. I wasn't talking on technicalities; but if you choose to, then yes, it was exactly the reasons you stated that paralyzed Elena Mukhina.
NB: I, from reading past stories on Elena, think it was actually a broken leg that did her in... I could be wrong though, so I'd advise you to take it with a grain of salt, lol. ;)
You are correct Dunntosh. She was recovering from a broken leg - that wasn't even fully healed before the cast was removed. There was a rush by her coach to get her on the Olympic team. Due to her poor showing in 79 - she probably wouldn't have made that team anyway! Such a shame.

Yes, you can see the mistake, it's pretty bad. She does her famous back somersault off the high bar and does a free hip around the low bar, she is supposed to reach back and catch the high bar like she did in 1972. She misses it and kind of swings under the high bar for a few seconds to get back on track.
hahah that is really cool!!!

1.) Standing on high bar is banned.

3.) Gymnastics skills now are much more dangerous now. I mean, a double twisting double layout dismount is pretty dangerous to me.
4.) Gymnastics back then was so much more about grace and dance, now it is like this on floor:
Dance a little
Double layout - stuck landing and then continue dancing a tiny bit like nothing broke your rhythm
its all choppy and robotic cept for a few gymnasts.

She got a 9.75, not a 7 something to whoever said that. She got deducted for the extra swing on the low bar (following her move).
1/2 of these moves (like belly beats) aren't done anymore because the bars have expanded in the last 30 years. You wouldn't be able to touch your stomach to the bar unless you were like...7 feet tall.

its true. that happened to many moves, like ending in rolls tumblings for women in FX.

Yes, you can see the mistake, it's pretty bad. She does her famous back somersault off the high bar and does a free hip around the low bar, she is supposed to reach back and catch the high bar like she did in 1972. She misses it and kind of swings under the high bar for a few seconds to get back on track.
