@ElCid48 Thank you for your kind wishes. I wish you the same. It's good to encounter like minded people on this forum. Class will out,and Ms. Forrest had an abundance of that.
As did Ricky Nelson. I haven't listened to him for some time,so today will be a good day to revisit him. Enjoyed him in Rio Bravo, stood his ground with some real heavyweights in that one.Wayne,Martin, and the wonderful Walter Brennan.
Awesome! Those were the days and Artie Shaw as well as Benny Goodman along with lovely ladies like Helen Forrest,Peggy Lee and others made them the glory that they were. Whatever happened to those romantic and happy days. TY 1930RedRed for this wonderful posting.
Thanks for uploading, 1930RedRed. I've said this before on YT, but the 30s surely must be the definitive musical decade. There doesn't seem to be a bad song recorded then, even if the times were pretty troubled then as they certainly are now.
Artie ended up a gruff old man but nearly until the end he would answer his own phone and answer any questions posed to him...you just had to get through the crankiness that comes with being 90.
..I have all of her recordings...she sang late, till her arthritis stunned her vocal cords.....her autobiography is wonderful.....Artie's real name was Arthur Warshawsky...she was also matchless perfection in her time.....
By far the greatest version of All the Things You Are. Artie certainly composed the best instrumental version, but Forrest really outdoes the instrumentals.
My parents exposed us to all kinds of music...to include big band. It was a wonderful gift, and even though I did not grow up in that era (I am 53), I am a huge fan of Helen Forrest and Artie Shaw. I have tried to do the same with my kids--expose them to all kinds of music, so that they have that same appreciation.
WHO is on the clarinet? You are so lucky to have apparently stumbled upon some of the best clarinet playing ever. Listen to Artie Shaw and Bennie Goodman here (see the sidebar), and you're in for an epic treat.
I love Helen, and popular music of that time.....she is my favorite of all time....not because she was the best singer, but because of the way she could interpret lyrics and sing them with such feeling. I fell in love with her the first time and every time I hear her.
This is Music, its so sad what happen to this country ,Todays music reflects what this country has become.Long Live The Band Years. It was The Greatest Generation.
A lot of interesting trivia below...and here is one more bit. Artie Shaw was married 8 times...and one of his earlier wives was Betty Kern, the daughter of the composer of this song, Jerome Kern.
It was the final offering from the successful team of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II, produced by Max Gordon, directed by Vincente Minnelli and opened out of town to rave reviews, playing to sold-out houses. But not long after opening at Broadway's Alvin Theater on November 17, 1939, "Very Warm for May" closed after fifty-nine performances.
However, the show contained a song that became a popular music standard, and before the year was out, Artie Shaw and His Orchestra, together with band vocalist Helen Forrest, recorded what many consider the finest version ever captured by a microphone of "All the Things You Are." And yes, as noted by others, it does not get any better than this.
70 years later, is the first time I hear this version of this amazing song. I'm seventeen and I can't stop listening to it and thinking that this song is love itself, in it's whole expresion. I think this song (and this version in particular) is wonderful.
My neighborhood watering hole kept this on the jukebox for at least 10 years for me. Artie, Benny & Harry at the peak of their danceband period. Another gem from Brooklyn. I love her!
@mrronniea - Helen was my dad's favorite singer. He was 19 in 1939. Imagining the thrill he felt hearing his favorite gal singing . . . Just like I truly enjoy the artists of my own generation. It's nice to think about.
@mrronniea Helen is my favorire female singer I am 51 but have listened to her for 25 years....she is from an era that is sadly forgotten by most..but not me!!
This one of my favourite songs of all time. I would like dedicate this to my Father Curtis Smout who passed away five months ago. I love and miss you Dad.
"All The Things You Are" written by Jerome Kern And Oscar Hammerstein I I Played and sung by Artie Shaw and Helen Forrest. One of the best songs ever written. It doesn't get any better. Thank you!!!

@34Packardphaeton I suppose that I could have written it as, " . . he made the ripe old age of 96 " or similar.
