  • If all numbers ae interesting, the only possible non-interesting number would be i....but i's pretty interesting too. Argh....

  • I think the smallest non-boring number is quite large.

  • The most interesting number ist 73....its the 21st prime numer...37..is also a prime number and is the 12th prime number...and 3 * 7 is 21...

    (Sheldon Cooper)

  • Over 12,000 subscribers now! :O

  • I saw this video a few days ago and thought "hmm, I recognise that prison-style office door...", and thought no more of it. Then I saw you in the core yesterday. This definitely makes you a mini-celebrity, if you weren't already!

  • @bluepie88 Woo! :)

  • omg!!! now I want to know the value of "x"!!!! aaaa i guess its not that boring

  • lol great ending

  • Thats my favourate number...so much i registered my first bike licence number on that number...the number is MH 06 AY 1729...the bonus is i gotthe register letters AY which are AY are 1st and 25th letters,,,combining them its 125 which also turns out a cube...i even threw a party on d day i got my licence plate LOL...

  • Optimist is true, but since its the smallest boring number your saying that it's interesting to be the smallest boring number, therefore it's interesting thus eliminating it's ability to be X. So X now equals the next number up making that the smallest boring number, but the first X is now not the smallest boring number. Therefore no longer interesting, therefore it's a paradox of the first 2 X's not all of them.

  • I did an essay on Ramanujan in college. He is really "non"interesting. ;)

Did you know he was an autodidact?

  • You assume there is a smallest non interesting number, not necessarily so. If I said that all reals greater than 0 are non-interesting, then there is no smallest non-interesting number greater than zero. Now if you are talking about natural numbers your argument works fine, this is like trying to use induction with the reals. I love your videos and of course all numbers are interesting I'm merely talking proof writing / logic :)

  • All numbers are interesting. If you take the set of all non-interesting numbers, then the lowest value member becomes interesting in that it is the lowest non-interesting number so you remove it from the set. Rinse and repeat and you end up with an empty set.

  • @OpenSourceUser problem is, moment you take x (lowest number in set) out of the set, it loses it's interestingness and it should be reinserted into the set.

  • @OpenSourceUser Not exactly. Assuming x is the small non-interesting number, it quickly becomes interesting again. Now Y would be the small uninteresting number, that's pretty interesting, but now X quickly becomes non-interesting again. This cycle will only repeat itself with the first 2 numbers. Making the 3rd lowest non-interesting number forever non-interesting. Of course whether something is interesting or not is completely based on opinion.

  • 94 is not interesting

  • wait what

  • Ahh, I wanted to know this to show my school teacher :(

I bet you choose the wrong video to upload :P

  • x = -∞ ?

  • @illustriouschin smallest NON INTERESTING ,infinity is quite interesting :P

  • Love the end xD Who cares? *walks away*

  • 10x1=10

    10x2=20

    10x3=30

    Interesting? :]

  • All of Ramanujan equations he claimed had came to him in his dreams from a Hindu goddess (I can't remember her name). He has inspired me to learn advanced mathematics and I plan on learning as much as possible until my death.

  • @Tri3Face For a second there I thought you were going to say, "He has inspired me to smoke lots and lots of opium."

  • @illustriouschin lol nah

  • My favorite number is 37.

    37x3=111

    37x6=222

...and so on and so forth...

    But, who cares?!

  • Good one, man... Haha... Who cares?

  • Oooh I just heard the proof (Optimist one) you stated on a Futurama commentary. The first time I listened to it I must not have picked it up. I watched this video recently so a moment ago as soon as I heard David X. Cohen about to give the proof I totally was waiting for what you said!

  • @WhiteRAZOR Cool! Have a look at the Futurama video I made too.

  • Heres a challange. 1,876,876,623

  • @livingwill1 It can be divided 54.

  • My favorite interesting number is zero.

  • (12)^2 + (33)^2 = 1233

  • In my honest oppinion, 69 is the best number ever.

  • Once x (being the smallest un-interesting number) becomes interesting (due to the fact that its the smallest un-interesting number. ) B (being the 2nd smallest un-interesting number) becomes the smallest uninteresting number, making it interesting. Once B becomes interesting for being the smallest un-interesting number. X loses its appeal. Now it seems X has become un-interesting all over again. Contradictions might taste good, but they are full of paradoxes.

  • my math teacher is JUST like you.. always excited and always smiling.. like theres too much botox..

  • omg this guy is a genious he must be a billionaire

  • @XXjeffhardyXX4ever That's right, just like all mathematicians.

  • @singingbanana Also, their superhuman intelligence makes it impossible to relate to them or share their interests.

  • @singingbanana thats a joke right? Aren't you just a college professor?

  • You are so freaking P I M P!

  • 3 people are pessimists

  • LOL a paradox.

  • @gtq838 no. a number can be both interesting and boring.

  • how is 47 intristing and wat do u mean by intristing cuz im rearded

  • I just made a video about the cardinality of intervals, and now I'm wondering if all intervals are interesting.

  • what about the number 1337( my favorite number)? or 27(weird als favorite number)

  • @scijma1 27 is my fav. number too XD WOOOO

  • Damn you and your manipulating logic skills! lol

  • Because X is a letter? ^_^

  • Lol. This made me Laugh. However your proof is faulty. To assume that some numbers are non-interesting, youre assuming there exists some set of non-interesting numbers. However this set need not have a smallest element being that it need not be a subset of the natural numbers. Thus you cannot necessarily use the well-ordering principle. This set could be a subset of the integers, reals, or even the complex numbers. (Im aware that this is probably meant to be for comedic affect.) Thx.

  • So I really liked your proof that all numbers are interesting. But your proof that all numbers are boring actually made me laugh out loud. :D

I like your videos. And interesting numbers.

  • Its been proven by scientists that 69 is now the most interesting number. lol

  • @Thehamsterofmuppets also proven by most teenagers

  • Ha. That's funny. What if you let x equal the 5th smallest non-interesting number?

Or we could open up a whole can of worms and discuss the interest of all transcendental numbers. e and pi have to be the big ones, but I'm sure there are plenty of other minor ones worth mentioning that are used on occassion.

  • @theboombody Shoot, I was going to write this today, and now I just realized I wrote it 6 months ago.

  • It's been proven by scientist and mathematicians that 1337 is the most interesting number in the universe.

  • this reminds me of the paradox of the unexpected hanging.

  • Tell me: How is the number 137 an interesting number :P?

  • 137 is the smallest prime with 3 distinct digits that remains prime if one of its digits is removed.

  • o.O heres one...783

  • Check the link in the description...

  • oh thanks sorry ;P

  • I love this vid cuz it has many interesting factors and it also illustrates how much math in this world is just unessesary humbug that nobody will ever take any use of :)

  • do more paradoxes videos.please please please

  • Someone please explain.

  • did you just make an erelivant descovery??(erelivant because its a way of looking at things, but can not help us with much, but mabe something)

  • singingbanana reminds me of Bricktop from the movie Snatch

when hes up in his years and decides to become a mobster, he'll fit the part perfectly

  • Risking commenting before actually watching (videos not working on this computer), so apologies if been said already: Not only is 1729=10^3+9^3=12^3+1^3, but 1729 is also the 3rd Carmichael number (the 1st two being 561 and 1105)...a Carmichael number being a number which passes a certain primality test - yet is not prime.

  • xD

    "Who cares??"

  • who cares..? :D

  • who cares....? lol i think all numbers COULD be interesting if we come up with something :)

  • I care...

  • Do some work!

haha, really enjoy your videos :)

  • Nasty... maths... Ahhh! :)

Say hi to Steven Hawkins upstairs for me ;)

  • Your office door makes it look like a vault. Is that a combination of keeping the workers locked in or making the workers feeling valued?

  • haha :)

  • aaaaah that was brilliant!!!! lol very nice!

  • hahah the who cares was awesome haha

  • And that's how the babies are born.

  • That was a pretty good vid, but now you need to explain a little more about why 'all' numbers are interesting :)

  • If x is the smallest uninteresting number, that makes x interesting. So say 5 is the smallest uninteresting number. That makes 5 interesting. Therefore, 5 is no longer the smallest uninteresting number. So say 6 now becomes the smallest uninteresting number. That makes it interesting...

  • Oh, I understand that now thanks, I didn't realize you could pass through the numbers like that : )

    Peace

  • Lol I didn't catch it at first either.

  • You should get a partnership with YouTube when the time comes :D.

  • 'Beauty' is in the eyes of the beholder .

  • I CARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i LOL really hard at the end bit

  • Is that your working place?

  • Yes, that's my office.

  • Tsk Tsk Tsk... Making videos from the Office..

    Shame on you ^^

  • Sadly, that only proves SOME numbers are interesting.

  • That's not right. It's only a joke, but the method of proof by contradiction would prove the statement for all numbers.

  • Ooooooh, I got you. Wow, i had an idiot moment.

  • Yeah, you've got it now :)

  • Say hi for me too. :)

He is the reason I study.

Also you got me very excited then just crushed all my hope! AH!

  • so how much would it cost for you to come to the states and speak at my school?

  • Lol I really like your videos. In my oppinon the most importaint numbers are zero and one.

  • Am Celebrating My 5 Subscription YAY

  • wat i dont understand

  • If you had asked me politely I might have been more inclined to explain.

  • If i already asked you this i'm sorry, but for your next video, i think it would be cool (if possible) if you were to give us your views on fermats last theorem.

  • Ok, might not be the next video, but I can do that - and I'll try to do it from the room in which the proof was first announced. I think that would be cool.

  • and i forgot. happy late birthday. less than a year till 30 bwahahaha. jk. have a good one man

  • I think the reasoning behind it is flawed.. but it's difficult to explain

  • lol, james you talk so fast sometimes i have to watch these a few times just to figure out what you said

  • So, you finished your video on something boring... but in an interesting way?

    or maybe...

    You're right:

    who cares!

    (I loved the proof)

  • 299 is divisible by 23 and 13!

  • @MrStuckyJ

    and 1 and 299 :P

    comment on vid:

nice vid :P congrats on your 1729 subscribers :P

  • I remember you doing this 'proof' during our last foundations lecture.

I shall forever treasure my "I am NOT a Wazzock" badge ;)

  • Yays! :)

  • hahahahaha! Well done.

Have you seen the proof that all numbers are prime? All you have to do is start testing.

    1 - yes

    2- sure is

    3 - yep

    4 - experimental error

    5- yes!

    Clearly all numbers are prime.

  • hahaha! :D

    I agree, 4 can't be taken into concideration :P

  • since you are so good at math what's

    proof_0 to the 0 = undefined

  • What is a perfect number?

  • 10 is a perfect number :P

  • No it's not.. Singingbanana told me what perfect numbers are. Check WIkipedia for perfect numbers :)

  • Didn't you just reach a thousand? I remember that, too. Congratulations from Denmark :)

  • Celebrating subscribers is a sneaky way for me to talk about numbers :)

  • Haha.. Then I should probably celebrate 10 subscribers.. I have 9 :P

  • cool

  • btw, congrats on hitting 1729 subs! You're huge!

  • It's a little out of date, I wrote the script two weeks ago. Did I change it? Nah.

  • That sucks then, I subscribed after that. And I thought I was in the 1729, that would have made me feel special. But oh well, at least I subscribed eventually.

  • Now that's my kind of math. Mixing up the heavy with the light...Love it....Thanks heaps for that one Singing Banana. 5/5 stars...

  • where did u record this video??

  • My office in Cambridge.

  • oh ok...Fast reply!

  • the number of hairs on my grandads head isn't boring.

  • And how many is that? :)

  • 3, that's a pretty interesting number, and it's easy to count... i wonder what yockenthwaits magic number is... does it say anywhere?

  • Poor Yockenthwaite can't read, but is brilliant at map reading. I doubt he has a bobble-hatted head for figures.

  • it's a hard name to spell isn't it.... 0.0

  • Yes it is! :)

  • Cool! 1st Viewer

  • 1,919 subscribers.. :D

    the number 99483904934451.432

    is really boring.

  • It sure is..!

  • It is interesting! It has a lot of 9s, 4s and 3s. And if you multiply it by 1000, you get a multiple of 9!

  • Congratulations for 1729 subscribers :D

  • haha. that was pretty interesting :)

  • 1st view, 1 rater

  • you fail
