I can say as violonist I am, that Violists are behind Violonists and when we hear such good musician as Yuri Bashmet, we could say, this is not fair, and maybe it is...
I wonder when we shall see totally that the pianist is an equal partner in duo sonatas, with the name in letters just as large as that of the 'soloist'. It is such an insult to have the pianist's name in smaller writing as in the record cover seen above. Yur's playing is very beautiful, but so is that of Mikhail Muntian.
@pianosydney noo not really. they are accompanying the soloist, people buy the cd for the soloist not for the accompanying piano. it's really as simple as that. it's a viola sonata, not a piano one.
@zygoose I do not agree with you. Ever since Schumann deliberated the piano part in his songs, wanting to free it from the restraints of the word, other composers, such as Mendelssohn, gave more attention to the piano and treated it as equal. (See, for example, the difference when a noted pianist is involved in, say, Mendelssohn's Piano Trio in D minor, with Rubinstein at the piano.)
The accompaniment has been underrated, for without it, the solo is worth nothing.
Where's 3rd movt? This is good music. Thx

@culturehorse There actually is no third movement, it's a two-movement sonata.

@zygoose Yea but artists work together in recitals. A good listener takes in the whole. The commercial aspect in the end should not skew the truth.
