Great video and commentary. But just wondering, when passing 16,000 ft, it was still overcast and I assume it would still be IMC. At which point did the pilot become visual, and continued descent below MORA/MEA (or LSALT as they call it in other parts of the world)?
@Randomnick123 Nice landing, ok. But not at all the most difficult landing in the world. Do it IFR, with a small twin-engine and some icing... then it will be difficult. The problem is that airline pilots are used to a 20 mile straight-in approach so doing an s turn for them is "oh shit".
Try Toncontin or Aeropuerto Juancho E. Vrausquin (Saba) or Courchevel (France) or Madeira (Portugal) or Lukla (Nepal) Kai Tak, Hong Kong (closed) or INSBRUCK
if you fly out of here on druk air they cut the passenger list in the summer as the aircraft can't get over the mountains as the air is thinner when warm so they take off in the morning!!!
What if the metro conditions are degrading and visibility requires IFR and CAT I or worst CAT III when close to the airport? Are the planes loaded w/ enough fuel to go back or reach a more suitable airport?
wow!!! kai-tak + shangri-la...can't get much better (actually would find this more exciting than kai-tak)....and, remember, this is not a a dornier or dehavilland prop but an a320....the pilot or narrator makes it sound like it's his first time in there; if it was, bet his adrenaline was pumping and the dopamine bouncing off the walls, and he's smilin' like a motherf**ker. and this is in good weather.
i think the approach must be funny for the pilot but i xould hate being at the back surrounded buy mountains and unable to see xhat happen in front of me
@gudknight No, the tire marks are made from the touchdown, not braking, if you have to lock the brakes and skid to stop, the aircraft shouldn't be landing at that airport...
@dallaspowerlifter Hilarious. And Ladies and Gentleman, the long cylindrical thing you see in the aisle is the pilots big dick, please step over it, not on it. Thankyou for flying Big Dick Airlines.
That is insane. They can't even level out the wings until they are over the runway! Whew, I can imagine sitting in the back looking out the window...uhh...where is the runway?...
oh yeah I have a PPL and that is truly the hardest approach i have ever seen preformed. there is no second chances on that landing the fAA will probably have that hillside removed because a down draft on that final turn in would prove fatal a more straight in approach would be ideal. First class flying!!!!
For those idiots who never paid attention during class.... retard basically means to slow down, or decelerate... not the kind of retard you use when you curse people -.-"
@AbsolZero000 I don't think you paid much attention either because 'retard' means set engines to idle because aircraft like the A320 with fly by wire, the thrusters do not idle automatically when the reversers are engaged as there are no cables :)
@AbsolZero000 The computer saying "RETARD" simply telling pilot to pull the throttle right back that pull the throttle to IDLE ... just before flare followed by landing ...
I will tell you what, that landing seems to have everything wrong with it instinctive it can, your gut tells you something is wrong about every moment of a landing like that, from the initial approach entry to touchdown. It seems to be the closest to the exact opposite of a normal landing and still be normal you can get.
To all those asking, the FMA yells out "Retard Retard" to tell the pilots to cut (retard) the throttle to idle. This is necessary for 2 reasons: 1) during the flare, so the plane doesn't start climbing again, and 2) unless the throttles are in idle, the auto spoilers won't auto deploy, which can be dangerous if the runway is wet or slippery. The pilot wasn't doing anything wrong; the time you cut the throttles vary on location and weather, but the FMA unfortunately always goes by radar altitude
One thing that I wondered about was the Operating Weight of the airliner, at the time of landing. If it was empty, and one hour of fuel aboard, then this landing, would have been easier to do.
You gents have balls of lead. Surprised you met the weight limit of the 320. Some masterful flying and composure there with no visual sighting of the runway. I cannot imagine what it would be like in fog. OMG. Not a pilot but seem to recall an absurd landing approach somewhere in Peru. The pilots banked and pulled so hard to squeeze the aircraft between the mountains where the runway was nestled. Felt like we were dropping on a knife edge turn. Ridiculous. Awesome vid.
Uh ... fuck that! There ought to be international coalition of pilots who gets to write letters to countries like this, along the lines of : "Fuck you guys, you don't get airplanes unless you promise to build a proper airport without mountains on it".
And History Channel did not see fit to even rate this as a top 10 dangerous airport?
Is this not a large enough traveled airport to rate? Other than that fact, someone will need to explain why not a top 10, cause this looked pretty wild.
Jeasus H. Christ; With all the aviation regulations in place, how in the name of all that is holy, did THIS airport slip through the net and get approval. Either they have paid a 'backhander' to some regulator or, (until this video appeared), it was a closely guarded secret. I have the DVD of extreme airports and THIS little beauty NEVER featured on it....
