Hi, great video, however I'd like to ask you. Did you use for it "normal" sand or plastic granules? I am trying build similar experiment. Thanks for reply!
@Chmee2 We use the plastic granules that come with the stream table. There are scaling problems with real sand as it is too dense to be reliably transported but such a small amount of water. The plastic has its own problems (its overly porous) but is generally better for things like headward erosion and terrace creation. I'm pretty sure that EmRiver might be willing to sell you just the sediment if you don't want to afford the whole table.
@DavidsonGeology - We run yesterday couple of experiments with fine grained quartz sand (specific gravity about 2.6), however particles are really so heavy exactly how you wrote. The result of it is much more braided river when we upper slope and produce meander is difficult in this setting. Let's try plastic media and see what happens :) Thanks for your tip with EmRiver.
We actually did a ton of R&D *trying* to dye that stuff, and it's nearly impossible. Send an email to the LRRD "info" address on website and we'll tell you where to get food coloring in quantity and how to dilute it.
Nice, thanks for posting and mentioning our Emriver models. Try using a little blue and green food coloring; both at a base level and "pulses," it'll really spice up your videos.
@gravelbar Thanks for the heads up on food coloring. I've been tempted but wasn't sure about staining the sediment. I've got a couple more that I'll post that were taken before getting that info. Cheers!
