In the conventional sense of the word, no they are not "chipped". But if you mean they have a completely different PCM program than a civilian CV, then yes. :)
No, no "knob" on the trans. The trans on a CVPI *does* shift harder than a civilian CV due to the computer programming. There are parts (called a J-mod) that you can put into the trans pretty easily to make it shift REALLY nice and hard because of different fluid routing and pressure.
I'm sick of all these Europeans talking trash about American cars. It's not American cars, it's the car they're looking at. America built cars 40 years ago that could still outrun plenty of modern cars, European or not.
I've been trying to find out about American Police cars, is the Crown Victoria still very popular with Police forces in the USA?
In England our Police forces use a wide variety of vehicles on the Motorways (Freeways), most of which are 3.0 litres and below, but will still hit 150mph in standard tune.
Do you need such big heavy vehicles for the PIT manouveres, we dont seem to use those tactics here?
the crown vic has been EXTREMLY popular in the american market. mostly because that was really the only V8 option out there that was massed produced. occasionly the mustang and camaro versions. now you see less and less because of the charger and magnum police interceptors. the v8 is a dying breed.
Thank you very much for that info, myself and a friend were looking at building a replica Police Cruiser to use in the UK, but we couldn't work out what the best car would be to use. I think you have helped to give us some guidance now. Many thanks.
Too bad the last time I tried that all I heard was a smash and I wound up in bed with a broken arm and 9 stitches in my head. I blacked out? I dont know. But that was cool as any thing. Now all you need is some light bars and youre set.
I own several p71s and I know for a fact that the trans are heavy duty, but Ford does not specify in what way they are heavy duty, other then that some of the internal parts are, but the driveshaft is made of aluminum, which is backed up by several AODE manuals.
Well, i cant speak for capirce and impala, but the ford cvpi only differs from a crown vic are: heavy duty suspension and shocks, heavy duty frame and body mounts, heavy duty oil and trans cooler, Heavy duty 78-amp battery, 3.27 rear axel ratio, heavy duty alternator, 160 degree thermostat and aluminum drive shaft. everything else is the same.
my dad is a police officer, and i have rode around with him before and he punched it, and its different, and i should know, cause we also own two crown vic's
I don't know man. A 3.8 liter impala against a 4.6 liter Vic.--not too much of a competition. Now if you are talking about the oldschool caprice--possible competition. The crown vic police interceptor is the stuff tho. Maintainance is not an issue as it would be with an impala.
Actually it's not. The police interceptor is no different than a regular crown vic(besides all the police equipment of course, but mechanically it's untouched), and it sports the same exact engine which is a 4.6 liter sohc V8 making 239hp.
Not entirely. Police Interceptors have heavier duty transmissions, better suspension, and an overall heavier duty engine. They have to in order to cope with the extreme wear and tear a police car goes through.
Sorry bigdmck01, that's just not true. I'm not sure about the suspension, but I know for a fact(have seen many with my own eyes, my friend is a Metropolitan Police Officer, he has even raced me with one LMAO)that the engine and transmission are exactly the same found in the commerical crown victoria sport LX. The reason they chose this car is because cost is low and it does the job as needed.
Well, apparently then we have different police officers saying different things because a police officer here in my town told me that they have a heavier duty transmission. I mean when I look at it, police are gonna pound that pedal to the floor to get speed quickly, imagine the damage that would do to a normal transmission overtime.
I conceed. Bigdmck01 is right about the tranny. It seems they do in fact have a special heavy duty tranny made for hard and direct shifting. Also, the computer is slightly tuned as well for a more performance like shift pattern. But at least I was right about the engine :D oh and jtel, no need to be rude, it's just car talk jeez.
i hope this isn't what the police use for chases. i do speeds in excess of 145mph in my SVT daily. my friend has a modded RSX that can top out at 160 no problem. fuckin pigs!
Trouble is. Nine chance out of ten, a police pursuit ends with the suspect ramming his car up a tree or stopped by box-ins and pitman maneuvers. Also cops ahead of the pursuit can pick up the chase. Then there are chopper flying overhead. Either way you and you 160mph SUV are as good as caught.
Yeah but a Crown Victoria can do 130 FOREVER. Your car would burn up in no time. Trust me i race people all the time and it usually ends with them on the side of the road, overheated.
I have a 99 CVPI. It has 120 K mi on it but well taken care of by fleet mechanics. It's the fastest car I've ever own, especially off the line. It commands a little respect on the road.
I just graduated the police academy july 16th.... i spent quite a bit of time behind the wheel. This car tops about about 130mph....they arent these superfast machines people think they are..... this a 250hp motor in a 4200+ lb car.....lol thats insane weight.... this vehicle has a horrible power to weight ratio..... look up the interceptors 0-60 times its about 8.8 sec lol.....(not fast at all)
yeah most police ones only get to about 135-to-140 ish from what ive heard. i drove the civilin one it was limited to 104 but no matter crown vics are easy to get power out of with the right equip ive heard of people getting crazy amounts of power with the same block
Any cop who drives one of them 4.6L Crown Vics will tell you the top speed is under 135--tops. That would be with the wind behind you, a slight decline, and at least a mile run. They usually never make it past 130, just like in this video. Anyone else who says so never drove one.
only the vehicle knows. the pi crown vic says it can do 150. at times it can probably as well as a galant doing 130 at times. but vehicles don't always do what the manual says it can do.
Yea, I know what you mean but when you are doing 100, if you double what the rev counter is saying, you still have about 500 rpm left before you reach the redline so it should be able to do over 200, 210 as it says in the manual.
That's a cool video and a cool car. But I just bought Nissan Maxima. It's a family car and the manufacturer says it does 138 mph. I think that car speed performance has finally moved beyond the muscle cars of the 60s. Maybe performance above 120 mph is no longer extraordinary?
i hate to burst your bubble Gajda BUT i have had my 4.0L V6 ford ranger 5 speed over 120 have had my 97 jeep GC 4.0L L6 over 120 have had my 125HP 5.0L V8 chevy caprice way past 85 (speedo only goes to 85)anything these days can go over 120. 120 is nothing big anymore...
oh okay i have a ranger and it used to top out at ninety but i took out the limiter and supercharged it and full exhaust and a few other mods it reaches 135-140 easy!
You guys have it all wrong. Sure most cars can go 130 mph and most of you think it's no big deal. But unless you have experienced the feel of a Crown Vic at 130 mph, then you should not complain. Especially when your screaming down the freeway Code 3 (lights & siren) and blasting past other cars. Sure your four banger might be able go that fast, but not as smooth as a Crown Vic does :-)
actually most cars can't go this fast. most cars can barely get past 100. the crown vics torquey v8 engine is in a class by itself compared to the new modern japanese crap out there. this big cruiser is the last bit of american auto history that ford will probably eventually flush down the drain!
i'd have to see it to believe it. of course an rx8 can its a performance car. i don't know what a 350 z is. but a crown vic is a 4000 family tank. i'd have to see a maxima or camry do it to believe it. i have more respect for the american tank than any piece of rice shit honda nissan toyota and mazda.
maybe with mods it can. but this vic is bone stock. the weak torque of these modern shit japanese engines run out of steam at about 60mph. a lot of the 6 cylinders have horsepower, but they lack torque and run out of steam.
all you americans are pretty ignorant when it comes to cars and their specs.. here in europe any normal family car will do over 120 mph, and the bit luxury ones (say middle class luxury) will all easily do 155+... our volvo for example does 255 with only a 2.9 litre engine 200hp
dude LOL! i don't give a shit about european "cars"! why don't you tell me how many pound feet of torque your volvos six has? Why would i spend over $60,000 on a frank when I can get a nice powerful car for half that much! Sure I know a lot of european cars such as Benz's and BMWs are a lot faster but how much are they? many are worth more than my house. Trust me, we're not all "stupid" Americans.
i've clocked 240km/h on gps once, didnt have more room on the autobahn back then... but i can really assure you my volvo will beat your crown victoria in literally any aspect... no matter what you come up with. ans as for the price aspect, try to find a second hand S80 T6.. that car will smoke whatever standard american car you put it up against and won't cost that much, except for maybe some hemi's and such. it's even more safe and luxurious too.
i've never seen it so i don't believe it. I have a lincoln continental with a 300 hp 24 valve v8. i don't think your frank can smoke me buddy. American torque forever!!!! God bless the USA!!
Yeah, it can hit 130mph with it's tongue hanging out of the grille. I LET OFF! And this car could cruise at 110mph all day long, your shitpile would melt after about 2 minutes.
C.V.s dont have Mustang motors(just b/c its a 4.6 doesnt mean its the same) police CVs are SOHC. if you want Dual, try a Merauder. Intercepter.?.?. what does it mean... Ans alot of oil coolers, power steering culrs, trans culers etc. A bumpy ride?(yes stiffer shocks) These things are built to take abuse!!!! and they win at that.
anyone here the hates crown vic's you need to stfu and get out of this comment section don't like to bad you'll end up when you see one of these bad boys come up behind you and light ur ass up. One word: Owned
Too bad the old boat Vics with a PI351 and stock 2 bbl carb would burry the needle past 140.... with four people in the car.... and yes, I speak from experience.
Give me a LT1 9C1 Caprice anyday over any Ford Police cars. The LT1 models were faster then the Ford Mustang Pursuit that was available the same year, much less the lethargic Crown Vics.
Dude since you think Ford police cars are so slow, try running away from an 05-06 vic. I bet you get caught easily without them having to use the radio. In fact I bet you get owned when you get caught lol.
The 06 crown Vic has 235 hp the last model caprice made over 10 years ago had 260 HP 330 ftlbs of torque. Talk to ANY police officer that had the privilege of driving a 5.7L caprice and they will tell you the Vic is crap and they would trade it for a caprice any day
i got a 99 p71. I haven't messed with her under the hood yet but I've slaughtered eclipses, civics, and even a z28 or 2. only time i got burnt, was taking on a new z06 (no shit)
Boys and their toys eh buddy? I did a ride along with a cop and we got a silent burgular alarm and he opened up his crown vic...we were goin about almost 80mph in a 30mph zone...great fun!
Well good for you then. I have plenty of cars that would whip your ass in a heartbeat, so unless you have something constructive to say, please keep your ignorance to yourself. Have a nice day!
I have a 02 m3..even tho its hella faster than this Im about to get a crown vic just for fun...ppl move out of your way with a white or black p71,and yes the laugh...been there done that lol
i love how that v8 roars.

TO ALL: Ok, after reading a whole bunch of peoples' comments...I have lost faith in humanity. LOOK AT THE VIDEO INFO...
1) This car is bone stock, is big, and only has 240hp.
2) YES it was to the floor...NO that was NOT the top speed.
3)Stock P71's *are* limited to 135mph, and yes they would go faster without the limit.

Also, due to the seemingly unlimited ignorance of some people, I will now be approving any comments before they are posted.
Anyways, enjoy! That's why I shared this in the first place!

Don't doubt the modern European diesel.
Ever heard of a Mercedes E320 CDI? It would molest that Crown Vic and any speed and still returns nearly 40 Miles per Gallon highway.

all you americans are pretty ignorant when it comes to cars and their specs.. here in europe any normal family car will do over 120 mph, and the bit luxury ones (say middle class luxury) will all easily do 155+... our volvo for example does 255 with only a 2.9 litre engine 200hp
Lowrider46 4 years ago
i mean 155 instead of 255 of course
Lowrider46 4 years ago
dude LOL! i don't give a shit about european "cars"! why don't you tell me how many pound feet of torque your volvos six has? Why would i spend over $60,000 on a frank when I can get a nice powerful car for half that much! Sure I know a lot of european cars such as Benz's and BMWs are a lot faster but how much are they? many are worth more than my house. Trust me, we're not all "stupid" Americans.
gajda1984 4 years ago
i'd have to see 155 to believe it, no offense my european buddy.
gajda1984 4 years ago
i've clocked 240km/h on gps once, didnt have more room on the autobahn back then... but i can really assure you my volvo will beat your crown victoria in literally any aspect... no matter what you come up with. ans as for the price aspect, try to find a second hand S80 T6.. that car will smoke whatever standard american car you put it up against and won't cost that much, except for maybe some hemi's and such. it's even more safe and luxurious too.
Lowrider46 4 years ago
i've never seen it so i don't believe it. I have a lincoln continental with a 300 hp 24 valve v8. i don't think your frank can smoke me buddy. American torque forever!!!! God bless the USA!!
gajda1984 4 years ago
have u ever driven a ford taurus feel like ur going 20 miles an hour even if ur doing 120 its kinda wierd

gajda1984 4 years ago

cobralover88 4 years ago
So what my four banger can hit 130mph... Not that big of a deal
Anhaedra 4 years ago
Yeah, it can hit 130mph with it's tongue hanging out of the grille. I LET OFF! And this car could cruise at 110mph all day long, your shitpile would melt after about 2 minutes.
therealzeke 4 years ago 11
C.V.s dont have Mustang motors(just b/c its a 4.6 doesnt mean its the same) police CVs are SOHC. if you want Dual, try a Merauder. Intercepter.?.?. what does it mean... Ans alot of oil coolers, power steering culrs, trans culers etc. A bumpy ride?(yes stiffer shocks) These things are built to take abuse!!!! and they win at that.

19shawn85 4 years ago
that cant be a cop car, my dad's car can go up to 230;(mazda) unless it can still go after the meter goes to the max point.
blackhawk777 4 years ago
Lord people are idiots.
1)We're talking MPH here, ignoramus.
2)And yes it could, if it wasn't limited to 135.
135 *MILES* *PER* *HOUR*
therealzeke 4 years ago
How come the CV's don't come wit tachometers?
Memphis35 4 years ago
I believe the '06-up models now have tachs.
therealzeke 4 years ago 5
I dont know what is wrong with that car but I had mine up to 135 and it was still climbing (V8, 4.6l, 2001 police interceptor
jwelsh793 4 years ago
Nothing was wrong with it, it was in awesome shape in fact. It was stock. And I let off.
therealzeke 4 years ago
Too bad the old boat Vics with a PI351 and stock 2 bbl carb would burry the needle past 140.... with four people in the car.... and yes, I speak from experience.
my83merc 4 years ago
i've seen this video before, i think thats actually a cop.
NKdude 4 years ago
No I am not.
therealzeke 4 years ago
These CVPI's are limited to 128 with the stock ecm program, reprogram it and 150 is easy.
moviking 4 years ago
Wrong, it's limited to 135mph. I don't know about 150, I'll let you know.
therealzeke 4 years ago
I'm pretty sure the driver wasn't flooring it. It took too long for that car to get to 130mph.
ahmedshamoo 4 years ago
Wrong, yes I was.
And I agree!
therealzeke 4 years ago
Give me a LT1 9C1 Caprice anyday over any Ford Police cars. The LT1 models were faster then the Ford Mustang Pursuit that was available the same year, much less the lethargic Crown Vics.
emtgregg 4 years ago
Dude since you think Ford police cars are so slow, try running away from an 05-06 vic. I bet you get caught easily without them having to use the radio. In fact I bet you get owned when you get caught lol.
oldgateway 4 years ago 2
The 06 crown Vic has 235 hp the last model caprice made over 10 years ago had 260 HP 330 ftlbs of torque. Talk to ANY police officer that had the privilege of driving a 5.7L caprice and they will tell you the Vic is crap and they would trade it for a caprice any day
StalkerWolf 4 years ago
i am a caprice man myself anyway.
gajda1984 4 years ago 2
Wrong. The '06 CVPI is rated at 250hp.
And I've driven both 9C1's and P71's and they both rule, doofus.
therealzeke 4 years ago
Yes, the 9C1's are awesome too. They were NOT faster than a SSP Mustang.
therealzeke 4 years ago
i got a 99 p71. I haven't messed with her under the hood yet but I've slaughtered eclipses, civics, and even a z28 or 2. only time i got burnt, was taking on a new z06 (no shit)
JohnnyPace 4 years ago
Boys and their toys eh buddy? I did a ride along with a cop and we got a silent burgular alarm and he opened up his crown vic...we were goin about almost 80mph in a 30mph zone...great fun!

Peterleo1972 4 years ago
Well good for you then. I have plenty of cars that would whip your ass in a heartbeat, so unless you have something constructive to say, please keep your ignorance to yourself. Have a nice day!

My 01 CVPI did 242KM/H:)
CaptMuxlow 4 years ago
