I saw that on HBO when i was 12 and thought it was good from Hanna Barbara. Say uh if you like animated movies on protecting the enviroment, you should watch Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke which are both similar movies to Ferngully and Once Upon.
I found it! I had this one on VCR when I was little.. but as VCRs were gone, never found it, as I only knew the title in Russian, and forgot that soon too... nevermind, YAY!
Well he also borrowed from Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki animated movies like Castle in The Sky (aka Laputa), Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and My Neighbor Totoro. He even borrowed from European animated cult classics like Fantastic Planet and LightYears (aka Gandahar), if you haven't seen them watch them here on youtube and you'll see i'm right.
Sure it's also similar to Ferngully, only Avatar is more for adults.
And judging by your name, does Avatar also remind you of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Castle in The Sky, Totoro and Princess Mononoke as well? Cameron is a fan of animation, anime, european animation and Sci-fi/fantasy movies/novels as he borrowed from those as well including to show his love for Ghibli.
@Johnlindsey289 yes actually but i think theres similar stories with all shows. Its just that everything has pretty much been done like with avatar but not everything is the same
I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! I remember during many trips to my BFFs house we would watch this movie. We would rewind the tape over and over again just to watch "The Batty Rap" or "Toxic Love". Aah, the childhood memories... =D
i was begining to think this movie was just a figment of my imagination....when i went to see avatar i kept asking my friends if anyone remembered a cartoon that was real simular to it....noone remembered it. but i did. down to the name...........
Ferngully is a lighter, child's film for all ages to appreciate and understand easily. Avatar is a more grown up, arguably more sophisticated look at a common theme between the two files, as well as a common lesson. With graphics to entice the senses.
I'm going to have to disagree with you about Avatar being a film for grown ups. I am 28 and I felt like I was watching a movie aimed at 7 year olds, like Ferngully. Avatar doesn't make you think at all...it's just preachy message stuff like save the trees, plants, etc...and paints every character in pure black and white. If Ferngully is for 5-8 year olds, Avatar is for 9-10 year olds.
Don't forget Cameron also took from My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in The Sky (aka Laputa), Last of the Mohicans, Princess Mononoke, nausicaa, Fantastic Planet, Willow, Star Wars etc. did it also reminded you of those movies as well?
This was a movie from when I was a little girl, my favorite movie, and my parents loved it too. We haven't seen it in years, and I want to get the DVD of it.
And yea it is like avatar, but I think avatar is too explosion-happy for my tastes. The cgi is brilliant, yea, but this is a great movie for children and parents alike. I'm going to be saving this to show to my children
Hah hah! Avatar is a copy of fern gully. Too funny. It's even got the blonde aussie meets rainforest girl love story... Am i the only person who thought Avatar was pretty crap?!
saying avatar copied this movie or pocahantas is like saying the japanese copied the chinese or americans copied the british it's stupid, no one gives a fuck about that opinon and for one thing it's story. If you're going to complain about this particular movie then go complain about every movie abotu robots being copy cats of other movies about robots, or movies abotu disasters being copy cats of other disaster movies Avatar was one of the best movies i've ever seen and fern gully was great too
everyone copies everyone else's ideas but who the fuck cares? avatar was a cross between pocahontas and ferngully but james cameron created an awesome film with awesome characters. might have a similar plot to some cartoons but the movie was still cream-your-pants good!
Cameron fucking wrote Avatar in 1993 before Pocahontas, BEFORE as he had the idea in 1988 as he wrote down the plot and ideas on a piece of paper that he put in his desk for 3 years then wrote his script in 1993. He announced in 1996 that he would make the movie as soon as Titanic is released next year but in 98 he decided he felt the technology was not ready as he put it in a drawer for a decade waiting for the technology to satisfy him
Does it also remind you of 1981's adult animated classic Heavy Metal as well? Cameron also borrowed from that since that is one of his favorite animated movies
don't forget Cameron also borrowed from Princess Mononoke as he combined Ferngully and Princess Mononoke together including Castle in The Sky (aka Laputa).
And did Avatar also reminded you of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (aka Warriors of the Wind), Princess Mononoke, Castle in The Sky (aka Laputa), Heavy Metal (the 1981 animated movie), Last of the Mohicans, Star Wars Trilogy, Dune, Willow, Fantastic Planet and LightYears (aka Gandahar) or Starchaser Legend of Orin? Cameron borrowed from those as well.
And do you think Avatar is more for adults while Ferngully is for kids?
I remember seeing this movie! I recently read the book by Diana Young- YES, IT WAS ORIGINALLY A BOOK! I was surprised, too. It's a very creative story and 20th Century Fox pulled it off splendidly- nice to know it stayed very true to the book!
my boyfriend told me this was his favorite movie when he was younger... so i decided to youtube it. and now i believe he has the weird taste in cartoon movies ever.
I was 11 when this film came out. I always thought the background choirs were beautiful, and angelic. The 90s had some of the greatest movies I think.
I was 10 when this came out in theaters and enjoyed it, i see your an 80's and early 90's kid too and mid-late 90's teenager as well, so am i. The 80's and 90's had awesome movies indeed sir. Crysta was bonervision wasn't she?
it definitely is a film about protecting the environment. yes, ill give you that. BUT how is this for naive kids? lumbering compnaies have actully destroyed rainforest land thats fact. the film also teaches about respecting the enviromnent. now how is that naive?
The message in this beautiful movie is almost a fact. Humans are basically greedy bastards who'd destroy an entire forest for lowsy money, while there are creatures in it, whether they're fictional or not.
I was like 6 or 7 when i first saw this movie. I've been looking for it for ages. I'm sort of pissed though because they don't also have the second movie. Anyone care to tell me where I can see it?
I live right next door to the australian rainforest this was based on. "ferntree gully" in melbourne, australia. i wish we really did have goannas down here
is it? maybe it's kinda a combination between that place and the rainforests in northern NSW/SE QLD, because the mountain in the movie is "Mount Warning", a real mountain up here. and we have goannas
I feel the same way, this movie could make me a nature lover it is so good and inspirer.. im 20 now and i wish the the big Movie Theaters in the world could put this movie again so a lot of kids and people could see it and learn something
I agree. The movie may be labelled for kids, but it's a great entertainment for adults as well, plus it bears a message that more people should pay attention to. It will always remain one of my favorites.
