@mcvadsr It should have stayed in 1984...sounds absolutely crappy...Love that bleeping steve miller intro...what piece of crap this thing is...heh heh no wonder Kawai don't make synths anymore
@maccagrabme You cant judge by youtube videos... analog synths sound way better than softsynths, not to mention they are wayyyyy more inspirational and not limited by CPU power. I have basically every softsynth you can think of as well as a bunch of hardware synths, and trust me, there's a big difference, especially if you do live shows. Nothing rocks a sound system like an analog synth... nothing.
@VincentsVideoVisions I wish I could agree but I don't think analog is 'way better'. If anything there tends to be slight warmth and low end in 'some' cases, depending on the synth. Overall the audience wouldn't notice or appreciate much difference unless they are synth freaks. I can tell you that a plugiator, minimonsta, Omnisphere, Trillian, OP-X Pro etc are very, very close to the real thing and hard to tell apart.
@maccagrabme I can clearly hear a difference! There's plenty of nice softsynths but nothing sounds like the real deal. Not to mention, with an analog synth everything is right there at your fingertips to modify in realtime. The sound, fun, and inspiration of using the real deal over software is worth the price. Also, nobody wants to go to a show and see some douche standing behind a laptop. The presence and balls of a good analog synth just can't be recreated.
@VincentsVideoVisions I respect your opinion but we must not be too critical regarding the wonder technology we have available today. There is always a tradeoff but let me just say that I use my analogs 5% of the time and the plugins 95% because they sound excellent and are a lot more convenient. Analog is cool and 10 yrs ago there was a big difference but I don't think their price justifies the sound quality compared to software anymore unless you are professional.
@maccagrabme I find producing on a computer to be convenient, yet utterly boring. To me, it's all about what inspires me to actually make music. If someone can keep entertained within a DAW, more power to them! The only thing I care to use a pc for is recording. It depends on what your goal is.. if you don't plan on putting on a live show or don't have a lot of money/space, vsts are 'good enough' but personally i'd rather have a TR-606 and some simple analog synth than all the vsts in the world.
@maccagrabme I'm not a pro myself, I just prefer using hardware, even virtual analog/digital gear. Producing on a PC, I get bogged down with all of the options. Hardware is costly, I admit, but I'd rather have some cool music gear than a bunch of useless crap like bigscreen tv's and name brand clothes. A lot of pros these days do everything 'in the box' but IMO those that stick to hardware tend to produce better and more interesting music, and are more creative overall because of experimentation
@maccagrabme Softsynths are good for digital sounds, but when it comes to getting into analog sound, they fall short. They might get you about 80% there, and for most people, that's good enough because the majority of electronic music makers these days are people with laptops and pirated software from torrents, and maybe a midi controller or two, and probably haven't owned any real hardware (especially vintage), so they can't make an accurate comparison. It really is night and day side by side.
I bought one yesterday for $30 in non-working condition at a thrift store, and I just opened 'er up and apparently it has a leaky RAM battery. Hopefully replacing it will cause it to work again...but even if I can't get it working, at least it looks cool!
@ThrilloVanHouten Does anyone know where to find a .wav file of the instrument data? Apparently once the battery in the SX-210/240 dies, you must manually reload the instruments via the data tape interface in order to get them back...
@ThrilloVanHouten For help with all Kawai synths, you can write to the Kawai technical support team in USA "digital@kawai us dot com". I rung up Kawai UK to ask about a new SX240 battery, they told me. You may also order spare parts from USA. Manuals are on Kawai's site. I'm not sure where to get the SX210 factory sounds, I was asked and this person later said he found them on a French site.
What a beautiful instrument this was. I used to own one, but was forced to sell it during some hard times a few years back. There's one on ebay right now that looks pretty tempting, haha!
Really?? You don't like the wood? Hmm. You're the first person I've seen in a long time to think that. In the 80's tons of kids painted the sides of old synths, but now everyone loves the wood.
Fucking MacGuyver theme? Good lord....

P.S. I checked the message. The SX210 sounds are on KVR audio dot com. The SX240 ones are on synthmania.

How much is a Kawai SX210 worth in UK sterling as I want to sell mine asap to a friend.
It has a problem in that the key hold button keeps appearing to stick, every time you try to play any notes it just trips the Key Hold button on.
I can't remeber if this a sign the memory battery is dying or not.
Any help would be appreciated
Kind Regards
Matt

looks pretty awesome for a vintage synth. If the boards at the sides were painted black it would be the bomb.
