  • They didn't show in America cause Sheena Easton lives there didn't won't her spoiling the parade...

  • lol!

  • I saw it in America...I was watching a PBS Special on Celtic Thunder or something like that and they kept playing the commercial over and over again...and I saw it once on the BBC America.

  • BBC America would be the best place for them to play it I think... I've still not seen it. I watch PBS a lot but never seen that show.

  • said commercial contains an english guy :-O

  • I hope you don't lose your gentle Stirlingshire accent!

  • gd point im at school in scotland and there's posters all over the place :P i think they're trying to make us nationalists as well as encouraging you guys to come back though. theres competitions for poems and stuff for who can be most pro-scotland without just ranting about the english even though thats what the organisers would love us to do i bet :L

  • pro-Scotland and anti-England are pretty much the same thing most of the time.

I'd say personally there's plenty to be proud of about Scotland but I tend not to get patriotic because, in my opinion, patriotism is a short dangerous step from nationalism... I have nothing against pride though!

  • I am not looking forward to scotland being overun by kilt clad SKADDISH americans.

If you were not raised in scotland you are not scottish fullstop

  • Well honestly I think it's supposed to be appealing to people like me, brought up in Scotland and ACTUALLY Scottish (Not distantly)... at least I thought so... I hadn't thought of the possibility of a faux-Scot invasion until you mentioned it...

  • How long do you have to have been away from Scotland to be considered an An American?? I have been here about a year though I have been home four times already this year and it's only the first week in June! That combined with having my Family visiting and My hubby and I both being Scot's (with non immigrant alian visa's so we can live and work in California) I am just wondering how long before people at home think we are Yanks trying to say were Skaddish!!!????

  • "I am just wondering how long before people at home think we are Yanks trying to say were Skaddish!!!???? "

If you wear raised in scotland you will always be scottish. The scots would always consider you as scottish, if you are from scotland.

  • I agree, I didn't hear about this until a friend of mine from Northern England emailed me. There's been nothing in the States. Glad she did though, cause I'll be back over to visit family in July!!

  • i like this i agree it was bad marketing i heard the general idea was to get relatives to ask family to visit and so save money on advertising to the world to get a lot of people who would see it but not get the ad and not come. was sick of the advert though til i saw the spoof version...it's good to laugh at yersel.

i think they posted it in several languages on youtube now.

  • aw i had to watch the spoof ten times i loved it :L

  • Edinburgh should indeed control Scotland due to it being the capital city of Scotland. Independence for Scotland is essential and you would realise this if you lived here.

Thankfully the vast majority of our population voted to have a referendum take place in 2010 to ask the people if Scotland should become independent, and if the the vast majority vote yes then Scotland shall become independent.

  • 1. I know that dkittv only recently moved out of Scotland, I'm not sure it's really different from 2004.

    2. How exactly is your plan of leaving Scotland if they don't become independent going to work out for you? If everyone who wanted it to be independent left - then no one is going to be there to give a shit. Maybe instead of protesting by leaving, stick around, get into politics, do something about it. Leaving isn't going to help, it's only going to make Scotland rely on England more.

  • I did indeed only move to the U.S. 4 - 5 years ago now so I do know what it's like living in Scotland and I know that the difference of opinion IN Scotland on whether or not it should/could/would be independent is so vast that there's no way you can just tell me that by living there I'd gain some deep understanding that I don't currently have... I'm not pro-Britain or pro-Independence, I'm anti-boundary and anti-border. I'm so far beyond Scottish Independence as being in any way crucial...

  • ...other than to a select few (much like any political move - which if it's being done in a referendum, it is) who will benefit greatly at the expense of everyone underneath them in the class system.

IF Scotland gains independence it will sadly not be when it is going to benefit the majority of the people who want it.

  • We see murderers coming out of jail after five years due to a shortage of prisons which is London's fault, we are so tolerant to crime due to London making our laws.

I don't mean to get into a political debate here, but any Scot who does care about his countries future or his countries well being should not class himself as a Scot, and you saying you do not care about us beign apart of the Union, well, that just says it all....

  • I do care about the country, my point which you took to mean I "didn't care" about my country was that border's shouldn't matter... Yes, London shouldn't control Scotland, nor should Edinburgh control Stirling or Stirling control Bridge Of Allan or Bridge Of Allan control any of the streets within it's township... I'm talking an idela world where we see past boundaries and borders and divisions. If you ask me what I think should happen RE: Independence in the world that EXISTS today...

  • ... it's an entirely different argument. I'd like to see a world though where people didn't need to worry about tax laws governed by people thousands of miles away who couldn't give a rat's ass...

I think we agree except that you take my criticism of my country to be hatred when it's anything but, I have plenty of good to say about Scotland but it wasn't relevant to this video or any comments on it...

  • Seeing our Scottish troops coming home in coffins due to London ordering us into illegal wars. My brother passed away in Iraq last year and I blame his death entirely on London, England.

I too shall be leaving Scotland if we're independent because I will not pay taxes to London and not obbey London's commands.

    W

  • Well, anyone who knows anything about Scotland today would understand that independence is essential, and that is just the way it is. Scotland is being used and abused whilst it's apart of the British Union, and no longer shall this continue.

It would also be less expensive to live in Scotland if we were not apart of the British Union due to London taxing us on literally everything ranging from food, gas, petrol and various vehicles.

  • Possibly true, about the cost... I bet it'd still be cheaper here in the U.S. though.

  • No, his money would not necesserely go towards independence, and this is the first year the independence party of Scotland (SNP) have been in power, so if he was paying tax in Scotland before he would have been paying the Labour Party money who are Unionist's.

Well, I don't see you owning a property in Scotland and paying taxes like a "real Scot" would?

  • I don't HAVE the money to live here and own property in Scotland as a second hoem but if I did have the money I most certainly would, which was what I said originally...

  • Sean Connery has already stated several times that he shall move back to Scotland only if we become independent, and I can see his point. I'm a great believer in Scottish Independence, and if it doesn't happen before I graduate then I'm out of here until independece comes.

I never meant it in that way! Do you plan to move back to Scotland?

  • Well he doesn't need to move back... he could own a home there and at least pay some taxes like a "true Scot"... then he'd have a holiday home and his tax money could go towards paving the way for the Scottish Government to become independent... it sounds more like Mr. Connery lives elsewhere but doesn't want to sound like he hates Scotland... I mean, not living there because it's not independent and instead living somewhere else where no-one cares about that stance is pointless

  • Additionally, I don't care for or against Scottish Independence as I don't believe borders are terribly important and I also believe that struggles for independence similar to Scotland's one (that is, one that isn't happening because of a particularly oppressive ruling nation are only spawned by Patriotism which in it's extreme (along with religion and money) is the cause of many of historys biggest wars.

  • ...not being Patriotic to me is not not loving one's country because I do love Scotland and that was the whole reason I made the video, I was disappointed in the way the Homecoming was handled and thought that much like any large endeavor the advertising and promotion of the event should have been going on for months before the year started.

I'd love to move back to Scotland but I'd need to be a millionaire it is unbelievable less expensive to live here in the U.S. and own land and property.

  • We're not begging, this is just to celebrate Burn's 250th birthday, as well as celebrating Scotland in general.

True Scots would remain in their country and pay tax here, that's all I'm saying...

  • Remind me again what month Burns' birthday is in?...

Don't go calling me an untrue Scot because I live in America. I moved because my wife lives here not through any disdain or unpatriotic act towards my home country. Let's face it, I'm no Mr Connery, who has more than enough money to own a home or 5 in Scotland as well as where he lives (LA I believe) but chooses not to...

  • Well, you and them wouldn't have see the advert as it has not been released in the United States yet, be patient and will come.

A true Scot would not abandon his country!! ;)

  • Then why are you on the side of the people seemingly begging us to come back! :P

  • It's not the start of Febuary yet. And what's to say you'll even get to see it?

There's a lot more than 100 million people in the USA, and you could be one of those who unfortunately will not see it.

I think it's half North America, half South, so maybe you will and maybe you wont, do you seriously expect that to show it to every house and on every TV channel in America? !!!

  • Of course not but I hear from people around the U.S. (thanks to this video) and they haven't seen it either and I think if they really are thinking about things properly the area I live (The North-East) probably, along with the West coast and Florida, has the highest immigrant population... if they're only targeting 100 million it will most likely include me. I'll look out for it though...

  • Yes, over 100 Million homes in America and Canada shall see these on various TV channels as well as major cinemas having adverst, and public transport having posters.

Alex Salmond spent millions on this, so it better fucking work!!!

  • When? I think it's failing so far, I've seen nothing...

  • You're a cock!!!

  • Thanks!!!

  • The adverts are going to be released in cinemas and on TV in America and the rest of the world at the start of this year.

  • Well a little bit soon to expect anyone to get there for Burns Night... which I assume is going to be a big part of it since the whole thing is because it's the 250th anniversary of his birth... I'm sure they'll have more stuff later in the year though I guess

  • Nah it's not just for Burns. There's alot more on offer.

  • Well I mean that's why they chose the year, I know there'll be stuff all year to do

  • o ya musent forget the golf and the wisky and the ....... hmm

  • Irn Bru!

  • you are not mising mutch with missing the Add

some scots that dont live in scotland or pay ther Tax (no Ofence) telling all of you how grate Scotland is. so grate thay live in the bahamas (no ofence)

  • None taken... I've paid more taxes in Scotland than in the U.S. (so far) and honestly if I was as rich as Mr Connery (or even close) I would most definitely own a second home in Scotland and would be paying taxes there because of it. Much like say Billy Connolly or J.K Rowling or whatever...

  • I would not go to America if I saw an American equivalent of this - a bunch of actors and musicians singing a nice tune in front of a rather depressing looking background. The main purpose for this seems to be to pitch an idea of nationalism to the residents of Scotland. Seems like a rather slippery way of using the tourism budget to fund a political agenda.

  • I can't imagine an American equivelant and I personally don't think the backgrounds were depressing... maybe they're just not depressing to Scots...

  • Think the vid is about Scottish talent and the background is incidental. Visitors are unlikely to see any of the celebrates if they come, unlike the landscape, and most people living abroad will not be aware of who most of the people who appear in the vid are. I also think a one minute vid will be too expensive to run on tv. As a piece of functional publicity I think its really only going to appeal to residents of Scotland.

  • Could be right...

There were quite a few that I didn't recognize in it but Sean Connery's piece made it worth the watch.

Well in any case they should do more than rely on word of mouth for us foreign dwellers I think... send Sean Connery to my house. That'll do.

  • Connery probably lives nearer you than me here in Scotland but at least he has stuck by the old place. I cant imagine any other country would accept that this vid is fit for purpose - and thats sad when there is so much cool stuff they could have done. Have a good oen dkittv.

  • Hopefully it's just the beginning of their campaign, but if they have more to come they better hurry since 2009 is almost upon us...

  • You see, this swings in roundabouts. No advertising in Scotland and you 'come home' wondering what all the fuss is about i.e. taxi drivers don't have a clue what this 'Homecoming' thing is all about. Plus, who would you rather be 'invited home' by, family? or a tourism message? Its must stronger coming from the former, surely? So actually, its pretty clever stuff from the tourist people I think, word of mouth is free!!

  • Well yes, it's free but unfortunately they're still paying for that 'word of mouth' aren't they?

I bet there are plenty of people who won't get that word of mouth though too...

  • Oddly, I heard about this, and I live in Toronto Canada.

But it was mentioned very briefly on the news and not by a commercial.

(Me mum's side of the family is Scottish, so I'm thinking of going if I can make it)

But you're right... playing it just in Scotland doesn't exactly inform the rest of the world...

  • I guess their intention is to hope people like us get informed by outside sources... doesn't seem efficient!

I haven't decided whether to try and make it back for it... or whether I'll attend any Homecoming "events", whatever they might be...
