Exactly. It's the same as Der Könnigrätzer Marsch. The Nazis used it at their rallies, but it was written long before the goons came to power. It's still an amazing song, no matter what moron trampled all over it..
It used to be the REgimental March of the oldest REgiment of Russian Foot Guards raised by Peter the Great, a long time before the Battle of Königgrätz!
It is also the Regimental Slow March of the ROYAL MARINES!
Do you know why the Russian nation is celebrating this day? the victory of the Red Army over Nazism and Facism,i cant recall the tri colour flag being hoisted over the reichstag,my recollection was the red banner being hoisted there and really its got nothing to do with Idealogywhether it be red or white its only patriotism and remembering those who died defending the U S S R at that time ok!!!! you Dingbat
BRAVO!!! Let us not forget the bravery and determination of Russia and her people to be free from oppression. May Russia and America always remain friends. Two great nations with more in common than they realize. Russia expanded eastward....America to the west....Today who stands as two of the GREAT POWERS? Russia and USA. Now with Bush gone may our friendship be strengthened!
Good comment. The Russians may have had a poor government, but that doesn't detract from the incredible bravery and accomplishments of the military in defeating the fascists.
They rightfully celebrate the victory and we can all be grateful for that victory.
Thus use of imperial music and "commie symbols" here signifies for me a lasting might of Russian nation and its victories, not its commie gov or other things.
Can't defy history, gotta remember it for the sake of avoiding further similar mistakes. Besides, every country has its own skeleton in a cupboard, right? Wanna delve in there? I suggest abandoning picking each other's teeth and focus on lasting things - peace, cooperation, humanism! :-)
Russian nation helped by other nations annexed by the USSR won the WWII. Yes, that was the flag used then. But what does it change - country government/regime is a temporary thing, but the notion of Motherland is lasting, that's what we fought for...
Love this march. It was Lord Mountbatten's favorite as well - used to introduce the old BBC documentary about his life.

Makes Sousa's marches sound like mere sprightly tunes.

It's not the ideology. A fine march is a fine march, period. Music can't think. If it's good, we play it.

At least the red banner flies high over imperialist garbage music which in any case they shouldn't play on victory day over the defeat of nazism
