I didn't see Ornithopter like this, it seems not like something able to fly really. And I prefered the movie version of the worm attack more scary for me, something like a shark attack (you don't see it coming) but really really too slow in the movie
That s really interesting to see a rebuilt version. I really hated the movie so far away from the spirit of the book. He took only what shined in the book and transformed all the soul of the story (deep research into the mind of each character) the phylosophy of each type of character, the several orders and their rules, the way into a new kind of humanity based on thinking conscience, the place of the religion... Etc... Lynch resumed, and by this, completely gone out of the essence of the book
Really impressive! Especially given that you are working on this by yourself. If you don't mind me asking, what 3D package are you using? Rendering? Compositing?
Birds and planes have their main wings in the middle and towards the front for good reasons. Flapping at the back means the vehicle cannot fly flat. Cut out a cardboard picture of the vehicle and hold it at various points to see what happens. (2D will do.)
Looks quite good except your flapping wing ornithopters aren't much better than the movie's wingless ones. You've built some nice lawn darts. ;) They need tails for balance and aerodynamic control.
there are several fancuts of Dune 84 out there . grab them from your favorite torrent site. theyre pretty good , filling in scenes that were cut like they were told in the book
I really like a lot of what you've done here. I agree with many of your intentions, having just watched Dune The Third Stage (which is where I found your blog/this video) I think that that edit is about the best the film will ever be, but it does lack some of the important establishing shots which you have included. It does seem a shame that you've lost the original worm attack on the mining car, which was truly breath-taking to watch (even though it doesn't match their later behaviour!)
The "low grade CGI" question is a good one, but one must remember that rendering of CGI is time consuming. Even if one has a good render farm, it then becomes a question of how much time you have for composite and grading.
Whoever made this reel must be a working professional, and I reckon they do a lot of pre-visual work. Given help, this would be an amazing reel.
As I slowly start to rework these shots they should slowly start to increase in quality!
Thanks for the comments everyone!
-Matticus333 - Yes, I did redesign the Harkonnen ships and there is a reason for it!
-TherealKINDLE - So? Many of the physical effects done back in 1983 are just as wonky as My IN PROGRESS effects - only in a different way. This is something I am doing for My own personal interest.. and oh yes, someone else has already redone THE THING with computer effects...
I have been always a huge Dune movie and soundtrack fan, so I can say only one word for this project: AWESOME! It's good to see, that there are some people, whom make various editions for DUNE! I enjoy that!!! Balázs from Hungary
Very nice! There's a lot of potential here. Only two things I noticed, the Ornithopters seem to be flying too fast over the desert (the landscape outside the windows moves too quickly at 7:12) and the Harkonnen ships at 8:22 should have longer tail ends.
Great job at 5:15, showing Arakeen surrounded by the cliff shield wall.
There's just a Tiny little problem though... Everything looks CG. The Original FX in Dune didn't look CG. That's because they were physical effects. What are you going to do next? Redo "The Thing" & replace everything with Cold Clinal Stiff Clean & Blatently fake computer Game Images?
That you've done this all yourself is quite amazing. But if you're going to make it convincing enough to fit with the original film, you're going to need a whole team. It's just too ambitious to do alone. Keep up the good work! Dune is one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time, along with Robocop, Terminator, Predator and of course the god of all sci-fi movies, Blade runner.
This is brilliant. This is a great way to showcase what current special effects can do- not only give decoration to a movie but show how it can advance a story. Brilliant.
It's very cool to see the visual interpretations that itch fan does to do movie. Imagine a gathering of fans, coursing Arts, united to recreate a version of Dune 2011, but adapting only the visual, not changing the story, to what could be with software nowadays ?!
@spacecowboy5000 : Thanks! I am still working on this project - but am currently working 6 days a week trying to meet deadlines on Megapython Vs Gatoroid and the budget version of Battle Of LA, so its not going as fast as I would like though I am learning a lot of techniques that will hopefully help Me to make the new effects even better.
Outstanding! These fx add to the movie and its scope. I especially like the folding space sequence. I like how you kept the basic look of the movie's ornithopters and added wings to extensions in the back. Great work.
Yeah, very good. It would definitely add the scale that the original certainly lack, not because of Davdi Lynch, but because the book is so big and unwielded and Dino's famous cost cutting!! Excellent job!!
how is any of this an improvement? The composting done in the original was terrible due to the limitations of the that method. But the art work, model work sets etc were and still are some of the best. I'm tired of this plastering CGI over older movies. make your own for cry out loud! The problem with this film was in the short time it had to get a huge amount of info across more then any FX problem. And the use of TOTO to make the sound track vs Brian eno. Make your own DUNE from scratch.
@blastandboom Many have tried, they tried and had the Herbert estate block them from continuing. This film is really good in many ways but it was ruined largely by having the film taken out of Lynch's hands. I have no problem with fan edits of this kind if they are finished to a standard consistent with the rest of the film and/or have something new to say with the footage. Adywan's Star Wars Revisited is an example of this sort of thing working well. It knocks spots out of the official DVD.
@petro1986 - No, unfortunately there is no involvement with David Lynch or anyone involved with the movie so far, except the production artist Ron Miller, who loaned Me some of the original model blueprints for use recreating the models digitally.
I love the space folding concept, especially the wonderfully simple camera pan to slip between planets. It has a suitably epic feel to it, no over the top hyperspace lightshow - Great work!

It's such a wonderful work, and so far it really shows a new perspective in the proposed shots. Congratulations.

i like the 84 movie as it is including the longer tv version. your "looks better" only looks artificial low grade CGI - how is that "better" ?
anyway, i wish you much fun for your project.
a new Dune epic movie in with the length of lotro would certainly be cool - also a new computer game :)
