Why shouldn't it be? It can take any of a thousand different forms, after all.
But specifically, I picked a female voice because in the story, Nyarlathotep appears as an unassuming youth, very non-threatening. I wanted a voice that was soft, but still held a bit of danger and madness to it. In the trailer, Nyarlathotep is voiced by our Producer, but its voice in the actual movie is a different actress.
"Then down the wide lane betwixt the two columns a lone figure strode; a tall, slim figure with the young face of an antique Pharaoh, gay with prismatic robes and crowned with a golden pshent that glowed with inherent light. ... strode that regal figure; whose proud carriage and smart features had in them the fascination of a dark god or fallen archangel, and around whose eyes there lurked the languid sparkle of capricious humour. It spoke, and in its mellow tones..."
Ah, I remember that now. I interpreted it to mean that he took the form of someone not so much non-threatening but more akin to Hermes from Greek myth.
Both of course, are messengers of a sort that enjoy the offerings of the mortal world whom they stride through.
"I interpreted it to mean that he took the form of someone not so much non-threatening but more akin to Hermes from Greek myth."
I suppose that is another way of interpreting it. Funny thing about Lovecraft -- he can describe so much yet also leave so much to the imagination. 8)
Yes exactly. I'll read something like Dream-Quest or Mountains of Madness over and over, and each time, I'll learn something new or see something a different way.
OH MY GOD. I have been deeply in love with this story since I was 11 years old. It has a romantic character and almost upbeat, life-affirming ending so unlike the rest of Lovecraft's work. MUST. PURCHASE. NOW. (and I never say that)
"It has a romantic character and almost upbeat, life-affirming ending so unlike the rest of Lovecraft's work."
Yep. That's one of the reasons we picked it. A lot of people associate Lovecraft with horror and with Unpleasant Endings for the main character, but "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" kinda shoots both those assumptions in the kneecaps.
Actually, the entire soundtrack (which includes this piece), we think, fit very well with the very dreamlike story. But (shrug) it's a matter of perspective. You don't HAVE to like it. 8)

If you cannot order a copy from Amazon to ship to Argentina, let me know. We ship internationally via Amazon, but on some rare occasions, we can do it ourselves.
For obvious reasons, I'd rather the movie not be torrented. ;)
However, you should be able to find it on Amazon easy-peasy. We used to run our orders through our own website, but now we just use Amazon, because it's easier for us, and frees us up to make more movies (such as "The Statement of Randolph Carter," "Memory," and "The Temple," to name a few...)
Very well done, but sadly the extremely poor voice acting (though this is through no fault of the makers or those involved) cuts through all the atmosphere and in some cases makes it quite tedious to watch; with characters like the evil slant-eyed trader of leng transformed into a 14 year old geek with a lisp. The art and music on the other hand are awsome and worth the price alone.
Unfortunately I cannot find the cited link. which is too bad -- I saw parts of this movie at a convention two years ago and it is, actually, very good.
Did you even both to read what jbearden said? He didn't debate that Lovecraft was horror, he said "that Lovecraft is horror ALONE" is fallacy. And on that end he's correct. It's no crime to point out that a famous author was good at more than just what he's famous for.
I agree with you. Lovecraft kicked ass but is he the king, no. Stephen King? No. Poe? No. I believe it is whoever gives us the shivers. There is no good or bad in life among anything. It is what we make it/ something the literary and world in it self needs to learn.
"That wouldn't even pass as a terrible leica reel."
It's true that the animation is very simple. The original plan was to have it even simpler, but we learned as we went. The goal wasn't to make "Final Fantasy," just to have a great time making this movie. 8)
It was made on a limited budget over the internet, that's why it is so crudely done. But it is one of the most well recieved adaptations of Lovecraft. I'm serious, I haven't heard any negatives yet. And there is some basic animation in it.
It has its detractors, but we knew it would, because of the simple animation. We're okay with that. The teaser is a little more simply animated than the actual movie, but if the teaser's animation turns you off, then the movie won't make you feel BETTER. 8) It is what it is and I don't let the animation get in the way of loving it.
Belief is all that makes reality reality, and most people I know of who read him believe Lovecraft is the essence of horror. If you don't agree, great, just don't spew that b.s. and expect everyone to bow in awe of your complex-sounding yet resoundingly hollow argument.
P.S. This "animated" film looks like a collection of sketch art. No thanks.
I'm personally far from a suicidal goth head and I resent people like you that think everyone who doesn't agree is some malfunctioning freak. If anything is the biggest fallacy of the twentieth century, it's the self-assurance people carried themselves with and the arrogance with which they belittled others, of which you demonstrate profoundly. After all, who are you to tell people what is and is not horror or anything else?
I thought your pseudo-intellectualism was pretty funny, especially all the pokes at how Lovecraft is not "horror". Ask most people who the king of horror writing is and they will more than likely say Stephen King. Stephen King himself called Lovecraft the best horror writer of the 20th century. So, in short, it seems quite absurd to make the stereotypically condescending comments ("suicidal goth heads") you made and from such a high and mighty standpoint.
"The animation is rather limited, the movie has been done since 2003!"
Thanks for posting this, soultransfixion. Yep, very done and available via amazon or the company website, which you can find via Google by entering "Guerrilla Productions" (I can't enter the URL here)
Look at that thing at 00:42, is that one of the Night-Gaunts? The makers of this film have obviously done their homework, and that can only mean that this is gonna be awesome. I really want to see this!
"The makers of this film have obviously done their homework"
We really tried, athaskreen. Part of the DVD is a CD-ROM commentary by the artist, Jason Thompson, which goes into EXHAUSTIVE detail about the research. *whew*
That Lovecraft is horror alone is the most enduring fallacy of this century. Rich Fantasy, with crystal cities and dreaming summer lands are also part of the journey of Randolph Carter. This important element of Lovecraft's works, namely, the influence of Lord Dunsany, is often missed by the suicidal goth heads. They do not understand that Lovecraft's vision do not just include the horrific. They miss the sublime mixture of abject horror and mystical beauty at once.
Intense and creepy illustrations are highlighted to create a menagerie of horror, integrated with some extremely potent, almost Jarboe~esque, sonic landscapes and backed on the pretense of being based on the classic Lovecraft novella . . . one of my favourites i might ad . . . Great stuff!

An unassuming youth? I don't remember that from the story. His speech at the end seemed anything from non-threatening though.

"An unassuming youth? I don't remember that from the story."
Well, it's been a while since I read the story, but that's my own phrasing. The actual text reads:
EdwardMartinIII 1 year ago
"Then down the wide lane betwixt the two columns a lone figure strode; a tall, slim figure with the young face of an antique Pharaoh, gay with prismatic robes and crowned with a golden pshent that glowed with inherent light. ... strode that regal figure; whose proud carriage and smart features had in them the fascination of a dark god or fallen archangel, and around whose eyes there lurked the languid sparkle of capricious humour. So, definitely, Nyarlathotep was non-sexed in the text, and er, the youthful description didn't seem too far off.
"His speech at the end seemed anything from non-threatening though."
Yep, and Kate plays that well, I must add.
(sorry about the multiple postings -- apparently there's a character limit on postings now. Weird.)
