There are a lot of careers that start at less than 40K and few that break 100K per year. I realize pilot pays have been reduced but in the 70's, legacy airline pilots were being paid in the mid 200K range (in today's dollars = 500K). Department of Labor statistics group airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers in the same category and list them as 13th highest paid employees in the U.S. mainly behind surgeons, dentists, and chief executives and above lawyers.
I travel on military orders often. Military members are reimbursed by the government for baggage fees. Military members are given a government credit card to pay these fees with. Companies do not generally provide services to the government for free. Delta gives the US Government a break by allowing military members in the past 3, and now 4 bags to be checked in while traveling on official orders. I think these soldiers owe Delta Air Lines an apology, not the other way around.
I also have traveled under military orders and never been given a credit card. Delta gives no US Government member a "break". Contracts between the airlines and Government average 1.4% higher per mile flown than the average non-government traveled mile flown! Spend 6-12 months in Afghanistan or anywhere else "in harms way". They should be allowed 10 bags and First Class seats including champagne!

And I'm not sure where you live, but $1800 a month (which equals out to a little over $10/hour for a 40 hour work week) is very close to the poverty line, especially if you have a family to provide for. @amluvisi I completely disagree with providing any special benefits for military personnel, police officers, other uniformed and civilian government employees. Our construction workers, coal miners, doctors, nurses, paramedics and many others put themselves on the line everyday for our benefit without the expectation of any special consideration from airlines and other companies.
@jjmashford I understand where you are coming from however those coal miners, doctors, nurses and paramedics are living in a FREE country because of these soldiers. You and I have the right to have an opinion and express that opinion because of these soldiers, who over many years have fought many battles and lost many lives in those battles. Many of these professions are also well paid (although potentially dangerous), whereas our troops are generally not very well paid.
Delta needs the fees in order to pay the pilots who need to maintain their mansions, summer homes, winter homes, and Porche sports cars. Things are getting tough for them with this economy. Whenever the airline posts a profitable quarter, the pilots put in for a pay increase insuring that the next quarter is a loss.
@waynefl26 A first year pilot at a major airline makes less than 40K. It takes a long time to break 100k a year. Considering how much time and training it takes to become a pilot at a major airline, I would say the flying public is getting a bargain.
The media is being had on the story about Delta airlines "over-charging" for extra baggage. What ever amount the soldiers paid, they will be reimbursed by the Army when they submit their government travel claim. It never failed, in my more than thirty years in the US Navy, to be reimbursed for travel expenses. It made no difference if it was a permanent move or temporary duty anywhere in the world.

This story has been misrepresented by the media. Why is the military requiring soldiers to transport military equipment on commercial airlines? Seriously... a rocket launcher? Did they just decide they needed them to protect themselves in Atlanta? It would be interesting to see what the policy or "military agreement with Delta" actually says. Either way, the soldiers handled this poorly. As an X Marine, I feel qualified to say posting the video was poor judgement. Can we say "proper channels"?
The soldiers are the one's at fault for not knowing policy and making a media mountain out of a mole hill. As military who has deployed more times than I can count, any excess baggage fee can be claimed on the travel voucher that must be filed after every trip. If these guys didn't know that either they're a) ignorant or b) purposely deceitful.
I should add to the comment below....it was first class seats that no one had bought and were going to go out empty. I hated to see those guys smooched together and I wanted them to know that we thanked them for what they were doing for us. Also, it was good business.
I think the Delta agents that charged them should be FIRED! I use to work for Delta n when I had a vacant seat in first, I would bump them up. That wasn't the rule and once n a while some moron would tell on me. Each time my supervisor came to me and said 'thank you for what you did.' They would end up saying they had been in the service too and knew it mean a lot to those guys I bumped up. I was proud to do it. I've warned the company many times about the class of employees they have now.

For one, I dont think the media has reported this in a responable way. They ask in a poll, should service members have to pay for extra baggage and then when you read the actually story, you see there is a dispute of how many baggage, 3 or 4. If the airline is under contract they have to honor it if they are not then somebody has to pay for the services. Being a vet myself understands that I too have to pay my way through life. If I go into a cafe I dont expect free food just because Im a vet.

The truer headline would be, "Soldiers possibly misinformed of contract with Delta and therefore had to pay an unexpected $200 for their 4th checked bag. The soldier in the video complained about Delta violating "the contract." From what I could find, it appears Delta correctly followed the contract which specifies only 3 bags. So the soldier was wrong. So will there be an apology video? Will this fact alter your opinion? Can we blame a company for sticking to the letter of the contract? Should Delta have been more accommodating? I will not provide answers to the above questions. Think for yourself, and please think before talking.
The U.S. military messed up by saying they could have 4 bags for free instead of 3. Delta has the same policy as some of the other major airlines. Southwest still does not charge for the first bag, but they do not fly internationally. While I understand the tendency to blame the airline, some of the blame goes to the U.S. military for messing up the orders in the first place. You do not want to have a policy where all bags are free, because soldiers, being human, will abuse it.

I've hired MANY that have said "I've got experience." I've fired MANY of them after an hour, didn't make a WHOLE day. Getting reimbursed has nothing to do with the discussion. It's the fact that 14 people, in one organization traveling together with more than 14 others, on one flight no less got caught having too many bags. What if one of them didn't have $200? Don't say they have a Government travel card because that no true. Not ALL have Government travel cards!

Delta Airlines is a pile of crap. Their frequent flyer program is a fraud, too. After I had booked enough flights on Delta to get my free trip, every seat to five destinations was full for a year! Unless, of course, I was PAYING for the flight!
The extra $200 expense should be seen as a business expense that needs reimbursement from the organization that required the trip. If a businessman was to travel and had to pay $200 for his 4th bag of luggage, the businessman would submit his receipts for reimbursement from the company that required the trip. The money should not come from Delta refunding anything. Instead, the expense should be submitted to the US Army and reimbursed to the soldiers through reimbursement channels
Sadly American totally humiliated my handicapped mother on her last flight out to me. You really can't win. She has severe COPD, so she doesn't look traditionally "handicapped", She was close to collapse and they humiliated her (and me loudly) by suggested we were trying to "cut" in line . And when her flight was canceled, they didn't have the decency to tell her, they left her in a wheelchair sitting in the terminal (she's also hard of hearing).

I really appreciated the troops to put their bodies in the front line fight for freedom, but I think all these should be the in the army's department expense. There are a lot of careers that start at less than 40K and few that break 100K per year. I realize pilot pays have been reduced but in the 70's, legacy airline pilots were being paid in the mid 200K range (in today's dollars = 500K). Department of Labor statistics group airline pilots, copilots, and flight engineers in the same category and list them as 13th highest paid employees in the U.S. mainly behind surgeons, dentists, and chief executives and above lawyers.

I travel on military orders often. Military members are reimbursed by the government for baggage fees. Military members are given a government credit card to pay these fees with. Companies do not generally provide services to the government for free. Delta gives the US Government a break by allowing military members in the past 3, and now 4 bags to be checked in while traveling on official orders. I think these soldiers owe Delta Air Lines an apology, not the other way around.

Contracts between the airlines and Government average 1.4% higher per mile flown than the average non-government traveled mile flown! Spend 6-12 months in Afghanistan or anywhere else "in harms way". I believe, as many other AMERICANS do, that our military should be treated better as they are laying their lives on the line to protect us back home. I see nothing wrong with billion dollar companies waiving fees for our soldiers. And I'm not sure where you live, but $1800 a month (which equals out to a little over $10/hour for a 40 hour work week) is very close to the poverty line, especially if you have a family to provide for. You are clearly very young and inexperienced.

Our construction workers, coal miners, doctors, nurses, paramedics and many others put themselves on the line everyday for our benefit without the expectation of any special consideration from airlines and other companies.

You and I have the right to have an opinion and express that opinion because of these soldiers, who over many years have fought many battles and lost many lives in those battles. Many of these professions are also well paid (although potentially dangerous), whereas our troops are generally not very well paid.

Delta needs the fees in order to pay the pilots who need to maintain their mansions, summer homes, winter homes, and Porche sports cars. Things are getting tough for them with this economy. Whenever the airline posts a profitable quarter, the pilots put in for a pay increase insuring that the next quarter is a loss.

The media is being had on the story about Delta airlines "over-charging" for extra baggage. What ever amount the soldiers paid, they will be reimbursed by the Army when they submit their government travel claim. It never failed, in my more than thirty years in the US Navy, to be reimbursed for travel expenses. It made no difference if it was a permanent move or temporary duty anywhere in the world.
These guys are whiners or ignorant.

This story has been misrepresented by the media. Why is the military requiring soldiers to transport military equipment on commercial airlines? Seriously... a rocket launcher? Did they just decide they needed them to protect themselves in Atlanta? It would be interesting to see what the policy or "military agreement with Delta" actually says. Either way, the soldiers handled this poorly. As an X Marine, I feel qualified to say posting the video was poor judgement. Can we say "proper channels"?

I think the Delta agents that charged them should be FIRED! I use to work for Delta n when I had a vacant seat in first, I would bump them up. That wasn't the rule and once n a while some moron would tell on me. Each time my supervisor came to me and said 'thank you for what you did.' They would end up saying they had been in the service too and knew it mean a lot to those guys I bumped up. I was proud to do it. I've warned the company many times about the class of employees they have now.

For one, I dont think the media has reported this in a responable way. They ask in a poll, should service members have to pay for extra baggage and then when you read the actually story, you see there is a dispute of how many baggage, 3 or 4. If the airline is under contract they have to honor it if they are not then somebody has to pay for the services. Being a vet myself understands that I too have to pay my way through life. If I go into a cafe I dont expect free food just because Im a vet.

The soldier in the video complained about Delta violating "the contract." From what I could find, it appears Delta correctly followed the contract which specifies only 3 bags. So the soldier was wrong. So will there be an apology video? Will this fact alter your opinion? Can we blame a company for sticking to the letter of the contract? The U.S. military messed up by saying they could have 4 bags for free instead of 3. Delta has the same policy as some of the other major airlines. Southwest still does not charge for the first bag, but they do not fly internationally. While I understand the tendency to blame the airline, some of the blame goes to the U.S. military for messing up the orders in the first place. You do not want to have a policy where all bags are free, because soldiers, being human, will abuse it.

Delta Airlines is a pile of crap. Their frequent flyer program is a fraud, too. After I had booked enough flights on Delta to get my free trip, every seat to five destinations was full for a year! Unless, of course, I was PAYING for the flight!

The extra $200 expense should be seen as a business expense that needs reimbursement from the organization that required the trip. If a businessman was to travel and had to pay $200 for his 4th bag of luggage, the businessman would submit his receipts for reimbursement from the company that required the trip. The money should not come from Delta refunding anything. Instead, the expense should be submitted to the US Army and reimbursed to the soldiers through reimbursement channels

Sadly American totally humiliated my handicapped mother on her last flight out to me. You really can't win. She has severe COPD, so she doesn't look traditionally "handicapped", She was close to collapse and they humiliated her (and me loudly) by suggested we were trying to "cut" in line . And when her flight was canceled, they didn't have the decency to tell her, they left her in a wheelchair sitting in the terminal (she's also hard of hearing).

Ok. So delta changed the police. 4 free bags are allowed. Yes anyone serving overseas shouldn't need to pay a damn thing for luggage for any airlines..shouldn't matter what class they are in. The soldiers in this video had a bad day what where they trying to get out of it? Because either way since they had a "contract" with delta it would have been taken care of anyways in the end.
People on here are so stupid and make a BIG deal out of something that doesn't even affect them. Relax a little.

Im single and live check to check with no health insurance .. I live in a run down Duplex with holes in the floor and I drive a 19 year old car with no air.. The recession is killing us.. Dont bankrupt a major business in America cause a stupid lady charge you 200 for an extra bag..

I really appreciated the troops to put their bodies in the front line fight for freedom, but I think all these should be the in the army's department expense. I mean this is bullying the private sectors, be real, airline aren't charity, if neither the army or anyone couldnt afford it then dont ride it, free market, willingness to pay and sell. It might be stupid for Delta while competitors are doing it. But this is economically wrong, and could have USPS the stuff, efficient shipping.

Delta, I hope you read this. Get down on you knees and thank God I am retired from my former position as an air traffic controller. DAL would be last in any of my lineups to the runway. I would have cost you a lot more than $2800 you tried to rip off the military. I will never fly delta again.

Im poorer then dirt with no health care and I rent in a run down duplex and drive a 19 year old car .. The goverment wont give me a penny. The reason why there are many other companies that gives them discounts is because military pays like crap. Discounts are typically given to military workers, students and senior citizens.
