MJ played in a tougher era where players can use hand check and the lack of a defensive 3 second rule allowed great centers to camp out under the rim and easily contest layups and shots from players driving into the lane. Remember MJ played in the 6 years in the 80's and 6 years in the 90's, both of these decades produced more hall of famers than any other era. Kobe's era lacked hall of fame caliber players

Yeah but that comes back to what i said, different era, back in the 50's when the league was mostly white, they weren't too many players who were 6'6 or more Russell was 6'10 almost 6'11, that's a huge difference versus the other player, he had a little edge over them, it's hard to argue on that!
Anyway you just can't compare Jordan to Russell or Kobe to Jordan it's 3 totally different style of player.

Russell was going against Reed, Thurman, Wilt, Lucas, Bellamy, and Pettit. Jordan wasn't going man to man against anyone of that caliber. PERIOD.

I wish they would have kept offensive and defensive rebounds in Russell's day, but they didn't.
Had Jordan stayed a few more years, he would have had as many titles as Russell, and Jordan never lost a Finals series. And c'mon Points are more important than rebounds. 22.5RPG is more impressive than 31.0 PPG, but also.....Jordan was a better defender. How can Russell with his height only average half of MJ's PPG at 4-5 inches taller?

This is just plainly SICK! I admire Michael Jordans career, but I think after Kobe's days are over he will be the Greatest player to play the game. Kobe flat out is a workhorse and his off season work ethic proves he will be the best when it is all said and done. Thank God he's in L.A.

@calmado36 Disagree, you have to look at his competition as a whole and compare to MJ's. MJ played in a tougher era where players can use hand check and the lack of a defensive 3 second rule allowed great centers to camp out under the rim and easily contest layups and shots from players driving into the lane. Remember MJ played in the 6 years in the 80's and 6 years in the 90's, both of these decades produced more hall of famers than any other era. Kobe's era lacked hall of fame caliber players

@calmado36 Most of the hall of fame players during Kobe's era came from the 90's and Jordan already faced them. Duncan, Garnett, Shaq, Robinson, Iverson, and Miller. You can't forget about the lack of great centers during Kobe's era, only two Shaq and Howard, Robinson doesn't count because he was in his decline. Jordan's era included Hakeem, Shaq, Parrish, Mutombo, Ewing, Moses Malone, Robinson, Robert Parish and the funny thing is that I'm leaving out a lot of players.

i think jordan was dubbed the greatest ever because he did what no other before or after him, yet, had done and what many experts considered to be impossible then: win the DPOY and scoring title on the same year. don't get me wrong.. i've been a huge kobe fan since day one. i watch every lakers game that i could. and nobody, and i mean NO-FUCKIN'-BODY is better than him today. but until kobe duplicates that feat of mike, jordan is still the greatest ever. period!

I'm a laker fan and I totally agree with you. Individual records doesn't warrant the comparison to history. Kobe is still far from Michael's records and it's for all of us to see whether he'd come close to the legend.
Kobe has few more years to play and it's up to him to do whatever it takes to be on top. One thing I know about Kobe that is conclusive, he is the closest player that resembles the skills of Michael.
