Yep! This is what you get when you try to "not take off", just go fast! Been watching guys do this for over 30 years; result (they call 'em "fast crow hops") is always the same. BAD!
Get the plane ready - get yourself ready - and apply FULL power and take off!! It's that simple!
im not a crash investigation expert but it looks like (IF) it was the first flight like it was aft of CG and was very very very sensitive on the elevator. but I could be wrong.
the 1/2 Vw doesnt put out a lot of power - you have to climb out at a very shallow angle - after the first bounce he tried to climb out - but too steeply and stalled.
I guest this plane was tail heavy. as soon as he ad enough lift, the plane increased its angle of attack and took off. but continued untill a stall occured. as soon as the plane came back on the ground the angle of attack was back to normal and speed still suffisent. resulting in a new takeoff. and so on...
hell,,he should have kept it at full throttle and climbed to pattern altitude and flew it around a bit,,,and made a real approach and then attempt a landing,,now he has rekitted this perfectly good flying airplane.
So Murphy's law strikes once again!! Obviously this was a "high speed" (?) taxi check? Hell, he had way more than enough speed for that plane to lift off...I'll bet he had that stick almost as far forward as you could get it. Not smart; not smart at all. Back to the drawing board? Doubt it, looks like maybe a total loss. Dude, you just don't do that! Never!!
i can't believe he did that. first instance of trouble, he should have cut the engine and start skidding back and forth to try and bleed some speed quicker. but, i guess he just wasn't quite thinking about that at the moment.
plenty of power vw engine cut in half ran good a/c was slopley built and that was suppost to be a high speed taxi. I think he did not mean to leave the ground. The combine effect of poor craftmanship and suprise of leaving the ground were the main contributers to the crash. I took this video in jan 2007 and is the only video

Not very bright. Lucky to be alive. No doubt he should have shut her down the instant the engine showed any sign of cutting out. Bad judgment.

Why did he try to take off after the first crash?
OriginalAtomicSheep 2 years ago
i think he wasnt trying to take off. the bounce probably pitched the aircaft enought to go way up.
