Yes! She is Italian, and so she should know what the hell does "Allegro NON TROPPO" mean! I really do admire her for her great musicality, but for Christ sake!...Everyone, who's "trusting her pronunciation" cause she's Italian or because he himself is Italian: I wish to inform you, that "alleluja" is NOT an Italian word, so that you are Italian doesn't mean you are an authority here. Secondly, her "a" is changing every 5 seconds and this alone I find to be against all the rules of singing.
Oh, and please don't take my comments the wrong way. It was not my intention to put her down, or say she is wrong or right (because who am I to say a professional is wrong or right). Some of the things were just not appeasing to my ear, that's all. Maybe she sung it the best way for her voice. Either way, it was still an amazing performance. She seems like such a genuine person and deserves every bit of fame. If I could sing this song like her, even if its not my favorite, I would gladly accept!
Not my favorite rendition of this song. I've listened to many professional singers versions, and this one isn't my cup of tea. It sounds like she's litterally giggling in the coloratura parts. Also, the way she switches from the [a] sound to [u] and [o] (in places where it should only be pure [a]) drives me nuts. And watching her is like watching someone with ADHD. Yes it's an uplifting song but her movements are way too much. That being said, she is an amazing singer, obviously.
@jd7x7jd That happens sometimes when capturing video and sound; the graphics and sound card may be processing at different speed, causing the bad syncing. With video editors, at least some of them, you can lock the video track then painstakingly shift the audio track back and forth, and testing it till it's reasonably in sync. Either that or get better video and sound cards :>)
"Alleluia" is the only word she sings, yet people are criticizing her pronunciation? This is liturgical or Ecclesiastical Latin, and the form of the Hebrew word "halleluyah" (English spelling) is how it was put into Greek for the New Testament and Church use 1,900 and some years ago.
All of you speaking of her poor mispronunciation, are you fluent in latin? Are you as good at singing as she is? I'm going to go out on a limb here and answer both of those questions for you, no. Words are pronounced differently all over the world, and each location thinks that they're the right ones, it's just the way it is...
I love this woman and she is awesome but what up with the messed up LATIN??? I mean, how come her pronunciation is so whack????? Pretty easy vowels and they are all way out there...???
I doubt we can pronounce Aleluia in so many ways as you consider. I think she pronounces it badly. Anyway it is not the proper voice for this motet. The tehnique is good but the voice is too... do not know how to call it. I prefer Arleen Auger's version a lot more.
@MrClasicalone I would argue that since Latin is a dead language no one can be absolutely positive that they know the "correct" way to pronounce Alleluia. There are at least as many ways to pronounce it as there are ways to spell it. You're entitled to your own opinion, but I disagree; Cecilia Bartoli is a world-renowned opera singer and she puts a great deal of preparation, thought and practice into her performances. I doubt you have such talent and subsequent credentials.
@MeAVE243 Couldn't agree more! "Alleilujea" sounds totally bizarre to me too, but does anyone really know how it's "supposed" to be pronounced? Musically speaking, this is a seriously admirable performance--not my cup of tea (and way too many facial contortions), but come on guys, she's one of a kind, of the most distinctive musicians on the planet.
@chavianog24 latin tonic or atonic As (both short and long) perfectly evolved into italian [a]. the difference is the vocalic "quantity" that is the length, but it was lost in modenr romance languages."darker" for romance laguages (and latin) does not make much sense.anyway italian IS the most conservative "vulgar latin", the closest to latin among the major romance laguages and the one that less changed the phonemes (an exeption is open/close Es and Os). she pronounced it perfectly :D
I love Cecilia beyond words, but something about her timbre just isn't right for this song. I personally think Diana Damrau's version is best. The way Cecilia attacks the notes just takes all the elegance out of it. She sings very capably and beautifully, but her voice is not a delicate enough instrument, if that makes any sense, to handle this song. That's just my humble opinion. On the other hand she does add some liveliness to this piece that is lost in other interpretations.
PLEASE Gabba02 re-record in sync. It's one of the greatest things on youtube, but not when pic and sound are not together. C'mon, it would only take you an hour or two...... :)
The singer appears to be out of sync probably due to PAL to NTSC television signal convertion. This video was probably produced in Europe where PAL is used instead of American NTSC tv signals.
Cecilia is a great singer regardless of television technicalities.
@TSellsch: That's EXACTLY what it sounds like. I love her voice and how she handles the coloratura, but I'm not liking that vowel. It should be an open "A" vowel, like jaw, law, etc. Right?
@HeartGoldMVP i think it is hard to say; the german anthem comes out of a haydn composition, ... i also found a motive in little night music (third movement i think) you can find in a haydn's piano sonata. my music teacher told me this was an prove of awe to the composer he copied the music from and that it used to be very usual...
So whenever my mind gets turbulent, whether depressed or misandric or misanthropic or self-hating or self-pitying or good intentions thwarted or hopes dashed or you name it, I either listen to some beautiful Buddhist mantras or watch Cecilia Bartoli sing. Having WATCHed her SING, now I'm a happy man :) How many souls does Miss Bartoli save, purify, and enlighten a year?
This was one horrible day for her! Her voice is always magnificent, but why in the world did she use that grotesque NYC "a" vowel throughout - that broad, nasal "can't" sound that no voice teacher would ever tolerate. Her two "a" sounds are not "Italian," but something an Italian would write something like "eij." Everything about her voice is magnificent except for this bizarre pronunciation. Maybe she felt she had to brass-overproject her voice by vowel modulation. Still, I love her.

i really love the beautufull voice of Cecilia Bartolli, but i think that this "motete" is not apropiate for her voice, i think that this is for a sopranos singers like joan sutherland or Diana Damrau, don t make me wrong, I really love Batoli's voice but is like ear to Mario del Monaco singing Nemorello (una furtiva lagrima), just my opinion, anyway I really love Cecilia Batolli's voice.

There is only ONE Bartoli, never has been another and never will be again. Her coloratura is thrilling to hear and her passion for singing is inspiring to watch. Brava!
"Pretty sure that my favorite part of this entire video is the fact that people who are "studying classical voice" are criticizing someone who has achieved fame in classical voice. Why can't people just be happy for someone who enjoys what they do? Nitpicking comes across as jealousy when it's in the wrong place, just a heads up.
If you want to hear Cecilia at her very best, find a version of "Una voce poco fa" from the Barber of Seville by Rossini (all I've heard are amazing). It shows off her Mezzo full range and incredible gymnastic singing to its best. Listen for the transition around 3-1/2 minutes to the end. Scary good.
And did the audio match the video? I'm fairly certain it doesn't but there were times that it seemed to match. If it is matching then I am rather perplexed...

@MsStixieLott Hahahaha, very. I found out that she's kinda a joke around the college here in the music department. Everyone says they only watch her vids when they need a good laugh.
I think she is wonderful.. But am I the only one who couldn't help but giggle at her facial expressions? xD

the vowels are kinda weird, but then again, cecilia's coloratura gives me goose bumps

Nope. Too contrived, sorry. Sounds like she's singing this while riding in a car speeding down a bumpy road. Kathleen Battle FTW!

Shes not letting her voice be free... She's controlling her voice too much. It sounds fake and I'm not a fan of how she's performing this at all.

the sound and the video aren't synced
anyways good performance

Just because you can sing it this fast doesn't mean you should.

Bad synchronization of sound and vision and the vibrato of La Bartoli is awful!

Incredible voice. And love her passion!

Beautiful singing. But she seems really tense. She is twitching like crazy.

bella sta tarantella!!!

i really love the beautufull voice of Cecilia Bartolli, but i think that this "motete" is not apropiate for her voice, i think that this is for a sopranos singers like joan sutherland or Diana Damrau, don t make me wrong, I really love Batoli's voice but is like ear to Mario del Monaco singing Nemorello (una furtiva lagrima), just my opinion, anyway I really love Cecilia Batolli's voice.

There is only ONE Bartoli, never has been another and never will be again. Her coloratura is thrilling to hear and her passion for singing is inspiring to watch. Brava!

Wow..few superlatives can fully describe this performace!!
I just cannot imagine why someone who does not appreciate real music (like this) would waste their time and then click the dislike button.

Scary good.

Very beautfiul.
And did the audio match the video? I'm fairly certain it doesn't but there were times that it seemed to match. If it is matching then I am rather perplexed...

I like her voice, but she makes the weirdest faces. When I listen to her I have to look away from the screen or scroll down, or else I start laughing.
