Not sure how gelatin would "release elections" but thats ok too. This setup works because the yeast (microbes) metabolizes the "Jello" and they produce the small amount of electrons so yes what you say is true however without the yeast nothing would have happened. As this project was done for a university course in cellular and molecular microbial biology pretty sure it is. For more information on fuel cells in general look up Dr. Lovely's experiments.
This isn't microbial. It's just dissimilar metals in an electron releasing solution. Your would get the same result with just an acid water solution or salt...
