What angers me: Annette was prolific & she was good -- so why always relegated to second string record labels? Why not a major? She deserved the promotion, the push. She had the goods & the looks. I know she was independently wealthy & didn't need the gigs -- but she had some top tunes of the era to sing & her efforts are all flawless. This song is one of her best. With her classic sign off -- "that's all" at the end. But, Annette...the melody does linger on...it's 2012.
@joe22twentytoo well if you mean death, than she died on the thirteenth or march, 1985 (as the description says) and died of cancer . if you mean her singing career, then she stopped singing in 1934 and settled into a married life with her husband. and i can't blame you for falling in love with her. her voice is really quite beautiful and so is her looks. thank you for your time.
Berlin fell madly in love, got married in 1927 and then his new wife fell ill and died.he was heartbroken and wrote this song as a memoir to her.He himself lived through the 20s/30s/40s/50s/60s/70s/and died in 1989
"When I Lost You" was the song Berlin wrote for his late wife who died in 1912 from typhoid fever six months after they wed. Beda Loehner wrote the lyrics for "The Song is Ended."
The song is credited to Irving Berlin along with the lyrics.l have seen the original 78 with just him on the credits.A few people do also mention Loehner as lyricist. The song has ended is about his wife's sudden death in 1912,and although released in 1927 was though to have been penned sometime before.Berlin's immediate tribute was When l lost you
Well at last someone has posted my favourite AH record. The lyrics really suit her delivery.Well done.l must say comparing, charming Annette to the surperb Bessie is just too much.Annette is not a blues singer or a jazz singer, but does ballards with jazz musicans.Bessie would turn in her grave

Beautiful. Lovely to hear this song as a waltz as written.
Annette Hanshaw has such a pure voice, perfect for this touching song.
Thank you for posting this great music.

The '20's sweetheart does it again! Her song did end when she married - she quit the biz...

I agree: they are very different types of singers, but both at the top of their game.
