I think the post cold war era has unfortunately not ushered in an era of transparency. Government agencies are still so obsessed with secrecy and security that they hide and cover up even the most insignificant information from the public as that was the habit in the Cold War era, for fear of soviet and communist spies. The cold war is over, super power enemies no longer exist. we no longer need huge fleets of nuclear subs and space lasers, nor do we need to hide this sort of accounting.

Faith based accounting is not a recipe for success. We're a bankrupt nation. Failed companies routinely have audits. Except if your Goldman or JPM. Then you get subsidized for failure and or fraud. No accounting means the fraud continues. No one knows who owns the gold that is there. So, an audit of Ft. Knox and the Fed is in order.

I'd like Fort Knox's gold reserve to be referred to the way FDR referred to privately owned gold. Fort Knox's "gold hoard" sounds about right to me.
