@gandalfwiz20007 I have heard some people tell me you can, but I have never tried. That would be a good test though. maybe sometime in the near future I can test that out and do a video on it.
nice.. i dont have sound.. but i bought a new comp for a couple of days ago and my hardrive doesnt fit with the cd room, becasue the cd room is a bit old. can i use this to install windows 7 by connecting it to the cdroom and then into the usb? i have already tried it, but it doestn work out for me.
@BuRgLaR187 This exact model is no longer available but I purchased it at tigerdirect. Newegg has a lot of similar ones as well. Search for USB IDE Adapter - you will see a lot that would work just as good if not better.
my ps3 went bust and i want my save files but if you swap hard drives on a ps3 it'll just want to format it so im hoping if it reads the old ps3 hard drive through its usb ill be able to copy my save files.
could you buy something like this from a typical pc equipment store?
Cool, I just got bought one and im about to try it out. One thing you forgot to mention though, make sure the harddrive is not in use when its unplugged, data can still be corrupted!
is there a link somewhere where i can get this thing, i have the blacX Sata docking station, but am looking for something for IDE. let me know please :)
@vangxaooo Could be you don't have power going to the drive. The way you connect a drive up to these adapters are sometimes tricky, depending on the type of drive. Make sure to read the instructions for the adapter depending on the type of drive you are plugging in.
1st THANK U for your quick replies & all your help! 2nd Can I bug you a bit more? I tried putting Ubuntu on CD but can't get the ISO recorder to work. Can I run it next to my current OS? Or should I try another OS? My next question is...in order to use the USB/Sata adapter, I have to break open the case to the external drive, right?? Because the case has no screws...And I have to open the case to make sure it's not a problem with the case, right?
@susfup No problem. As for running it "next to" your current OS, it's probably not going to work. You could maybe try something like VirtualBox and try it in a VM, but USB attached devices in VirtualBox has always caused me headaches. Best bet is to burn it to a disc. There is always the "live USB flash drive" method, there are a ton of tutorials out there on how to create it this way. Yes, you will need to open your case, but try it first while it is still plugged into the mobo, you never know.
Gud video. But it seems the HDD s recognized/detected by the PC...wat about when the HDD is not detected by the PC, how can one recover the data? What are some of the tool/techniques/methods can one use to retrieve the data?
@mcitpstudent Thanks for the comment. That is a much tougher job if the HDD is not recognized / detected. I would try a Linux box (or a Linux LiveCD) and see if you can see the drive. If not, I have a buddy at work swear by this: Put the drive in your freezer for 5/10 minutes, then pull it out and right away plug it in to the computer.
@PCAddictsLive What is a Linux box? I am trying to do the same thing as mcitpstudent. My Seagate GoFlex Desk isn't recognized and it doesn't even have power (I know it's not the ac adapter...I got the new drive from Seagate and tried the new adapter on the fried drive). The drive clicked for awhile, then stopped all together....My question is: is there ANY way I can get my data back? I have permission to open the case so it won't void my warranty. Help! Please!
@susfup Linux box = a computer (can be a really old one) that is running the one of the Linux operating system distributions (google ubuntu for one of the most popular beginning versions). Since the drive is clicking, it might be dead... in this case, if it were me, I would try the freezer trick: place the drive in your freezer for 5-10 min, take it out and try it again right away... you might have enough time to grab some files. Please let me know if this worked or not.
@PCAddictsLive -Thanks for the quick response! Yeah, the drive quit clicking and no longer has the power lights either. So, if the drive is dead....I wont be able to get data from it? Seagate told me there was a way to do it (they can't tell me, of course) and to look it up on youtube. Anyway, since I have no access to a Linux I will definitely try the freezer trick and I'll let ya know. Thanks again!
@susfup Interesting they suggested to look it up on YouTube. Maybe they are also talking about the freezer trick hehe... I bet they are. Try it out, and ya please let me know... I wanted to try this out for myself, but don't have any dead/clicking drives!
@PCAddictsLive Now wait a second......can I download a Linux OS and try that first? I was thinking you meant that a Linux box was a kind of computer, lol! But I'm seeing that I can download it....so what do I do once I download the OS? Were you saying that I may be able to see my drive then, even if the drive isn't working, right?
@susfup Yes, you download the free Linux Distrobution (like Ubuntu). You can burn that to a disc, then have the USB / Sata adapter and drive plugged in, then boot off of the CD. This will boot you into operating system running only off of the CD and RAM (your local hard drive is not affected).
@ilovemultipacks Used to be able to buy this one at TigerDirect, but I don't think they have this exact one. Any of the ones similar do the same thing though.
Trying to transfer files in a administrators, It keeps telling me I need administrative permission to do so. I have Windows Vista. What can I do, thanks.
@PCAddictsLive If I take owner ship of the files then the owner will not be able to access them unless the take back ownership I guess, plus its like 50 documents! I don't really want to take ownership of each one. If I use Ubuntu, I don't Windows will recognize it, do you think that will work?
@6foot7in When you take ownership of the root directory(s), there is an option (checkbox) you need to check that says: Replace owner on subcontainers and objects. That will recurse through any directories and set the ownership for all files in the current and subdirectories. Also don't worry about the end user not having rights. You can just do the same thing when the files are transferred back.
Great video: Any tips on how to transfer files from a administrator account? Every time I try, it tells me I need to be the administrator to transfer the files. I am the Administrator on my computer, but I think it referring to the administrator on the other computer that the hard drive came from. It does not allow me to type in a password. What can I do? Oh and I have Windows Vista, and XP in on the hard drive I am transferring from.

if the HDD is fine and is recognized by the PC using this adapter, the rest is easy just like an external HDD. Here is the real question. If the adapter sees and recognized the HDD with a slew of data, how to recover files or folders.. Thanks for your help. Love your videos! HUGE help!
@merrywebdesigns Thanks for the comment! I haven't tried an esata to usb adapter with it yet, but I honestly don't see why it wouldn't work. Not sure if you will have to remove the HDD from the pc or not, since I don't know how much space you have inside the case. They make different type adapters so it doesn't take up much room in the case that would work nice too.
@PCAddictsLive Forgot to mention in my original post that the desktop doesn't work. Turns on but doesn't boot up. Just trying to figure out what was best to buy--have decided to go with the whole adapter thing like you have on the video. I'm guessing maybe the esata port on the back of the PC is more likely for input rather than output? Tried hooking up both computers using a USB to USB cable but that didn't work. Get the feeling it would have if the PC were working. Thanks for your reply! M
I can't access my external drive normally. If you use this adapter, is it the same as simply connecting the enclosure to the pc (when it's not broken)? I really want to back up my files on my drive but I wouldn't want to do it if it changes and moves all my files around with changed file names and changed folder names (I'm using windows if it matters). Please answer, I'm desperate :(
Great video... Really helpful, but when did u turn the power on??
I bought an adapter that didn't have an on/off switch. I plugged the power in and heard the hard drive kicking in but when u plugged the USB in, there was a popping noise and I think the adapter broke!
Would it better to have it all plugged in first and then put the power on??
@simmomike Thats a very good question... luckily mine has a power switch like you mentioned. I think I had it plugged into power before plugging anything else in. In your case, I would probably plug the drive in, plug the AC power in, then plug the usb, or... plug the hdd and usb in, then power. Thanks for the comments.
i have a 2TB external hard drive and i got an I/O error, would i be able to use a SATA to USB connector to read my hard drive or am i pretty much just screwed? the hard drive spins fine when i put my ear to it and has no clicking if that helps
@PsychoRocker69 Oh wow, thats a good question. Have you tried putting it in a different computer to see if you can access it there? Let us know if you try a USB/Satat adapter, and if it worked or not please.
thanks for the info... i tried this but my computer only recognize that the hard drive is there. i even tried going to my computer but it only shows the actual hard drive for the computer and not the newly connected one
HAHA!!! I like that Operatic bit just imagine what the gocompair advert would be like like this. By the way gocompair is a UK comercial so anyone who's American can check it out here on youtube. Anyway thanks 4 telling us about the Adaptor!
@THEMIZKID Ummm, with IDE, have you tried taking the power plug going into the adapter, and plugging that directly into the drive's power connector? With IDE, I have to do that.
The red usb cable is if you don't have a power outlet available and need to get to the files, the hdd will spin significantly slower (7500rpm might throttle down to about 5500) But, transfer speed will remain identical because of the usb interface.
cool thing

@PsychoRocker69 Oh wow, thats a good question. Have you tried putting it in a different computer to see if you can access it there? Let us know if you try a USB/Satat adapter, and if it worked or not please.

@persone107 You will probably need the password, but I haven't tried. There might be ways around this.

Thats Bull crap! I have an adapter just like that and when I use an IDE drive i have to pull out a pc power supply to power up the drive
THEMIZKID 1 year ago
@THEMIZKID Ummm, with IDE, have you tried taking the power plug going into the adapter, and plugging that directly into the drive's power connector? With IDE, I have to do that.

The red usb cable is if you don't have a power outlet available and need to get to the files, the hdd will spin significantly slower (7500rpm might throttle down to about 5500) But, transfer speed will remain identical because of the usb interface.
