R.I.P Carl Macek, who passed away this weekend. If it wasn't for him, then we wouldn't have gotten Macross here in the U.S, and to a lesser extent the growth of the anime market here as well.
He had good intentions at first, attempting to dub Macross straight via home video, and thus we got this EPIC openin.
"Ten years later Super Fortress Macross would rise, GUARDIAN OF YOU AND OF MEEEEEE!!!"
@SuperAdventures I still liked what this was as well. If it was just Macross and perhaps a cable channel like Nickelodeon had offered to carry said program, I'd probably watch rather than the route they ended up going with Robotech.
I read somewhere that this opening theme (also done by Ulpio Minucci) was later repurposed as background music for "Robotech", without the campy lyrics and horrible sincger of course.
I'd like to see this pre-Robotech dub episode, could you post it up if you have it InheritedWill?
I'd read the same thing about the theme being reused later on, and it's true. It's the second track on the "Robotech Perfect Soundtrack Album", titled "Macross City". You can find it on Youtube by searching "ROBOTECH - PERFECT SOUNDTRACK - CITY MACROSS"
Yeah, I have the complete episode (it was one of the extras discs they had in a couple of the Robotech DVD releases) and I suppose I could re-rip it, split it and upload it for you.
Really? That'd be awesome. I'd really appreciate it.
I'm a sucker for obscure stuff such as this, or otherwise older dubs of anime which have been replaced with newer, sleeker dubs (i.e "Akira").
As you can see, on my account I have episodes of "G-Force", the second of 3 English dubs of "Science Ninja Team Gatchaman", and the least popular one. I recently uploaded its pilot episodes as well, which feature new music exclusive to the pilots.
Am I the only one pissed that some schlock company guards the rights to this footage as if they created the motherfucker, and has the nerve to sue anyone who makes a deal with the original owner for the likeness of valkyrie fighters, etc?
Harmony Gold should be forced at gatling gunpoint to sell back the rights to Robot-ecccch's parent footage to Big West for a dollar in court.
La la ladida la la MACROSS! La dum dum dee la la la MACROSS!

what was so wrong with robotech?

@slyther2
I personally don't see anything wrong with robotech, but after seeing the original macross uncut, it's hard to go back.

This is actually a pretty decent opening, even if it's a bit cheesy!

@speedstriker I wonder why they didnt just translate and dubbed the original theme song.
BlackAce1229 1 year ago
@BlackAce1229 Try translating it into English and have it fit the original melody. It's not pretty.

@EnigmaTeam1 These are reasons why often they go this route with coming up with original songs as well.

Gawd that was bad, hell not even MST3k could save this. I'd haven never suspected HG of having a single Braincell.
This Clip demonstrates that they in fact did when they commissioned Ulpio Minucci to rework the OP for Robotech.
