I don't know if you figured it out but, cakes isn't very strong nor is it easily malleable. If you cut off to much then the entire proportions would be off. But if you make it out of something else like rice krispies and what not then it's easier to mold into the shape and it's a lot quicker to fix than a cake is... Plus it has a better support, for some designs you have to use a dowel or the like to support... A cake wouldn't hold onto the dowel as easily as rice krispies...
