I agree that this is better than U2's version. It is up there as one of Bono's greatest ever lyrics with that classic U2 technique of writing about something that could either be interpreted as Biblical or in this case, someone over-coming drug addiction. Maybe it's both. A great melody too. My only gripe is that Bono almost shouts the lyrics from the first line - he doesn't build to that intensity - he has it from the start which I think is a shame. Compare, say, to Bowie's Heroes which builds.

This is gorgeous. The song has grown on me, but initially Bono's vocal affectations really bugged me. You sing it with such feeling without that pretention Bono oozed in the studio version. The overdubs are lovely, too. Bravo!
