A wise man. Who also gave a lot of pleasure to my mam and all the other housewives in the 60s. By singing of course. I remember listening to him on the radio when I was v. small, his songs of tropical islands were a welcome ray of sunshine in the lives of many people. God bless you Harry. And thanks.
I have listened to Harry Belafonte since I was a kid and LOVED his singing. He has / had one of the most beautiful voices ever recorded. God Bless you Mr. Belafonte !
uno de los grandes, unio a Gringolandia con las republicas bananeras. tengo 36 naños vivo en Panama y seguro que este hombre hizo buenas cosas en su juventud.
I had the good fortune to meet Harry Belafonte many years ago. His intellectual prowess and caring for humanity are evidenced by his critical analysis of the hegemonic forces that determine the social, economic, and political life not only of blacks in the United States, but also of all humanity. Harry possessed this kind of wisdom at a young age....a true gentleman and a scholar!
Harry Belefonte - what an amazing human being - I am a huge fan of Carmen Jones but from his acting style it was quite apparent that Harry was not manipulated in that film, even then, by negro 'staging'. He was his own person even under all that pressure then. It is quite obvious and noticeable that a man who can sing opera (and reggae) like he can does not need someone telling him how to live his life. Thank you Harry for your great talent and for sharing it with us. I am a huge huge fan.
How long ago was this taken? It seems to me that there have been monumental strides towards equality in just my lifetime (37 yrs.) More truth in depictions that media shows too. It will be interesting to see what develops especially over the next 4 years.

You've got to appreciate the elders. They see things so clearly. "I was able to play the character to the FULLNESS of my BLACKNESS." Beautiful. Just beautiful. I gotta rent those movies.
Wisdom in it's rarest form learned through life. He is right not to have taken on that roll in Porgy and Bess. Not just black people are pictured negatively so are muslims and all other non caucasian people. And I am a caucasian girl but I do not put people in stereotype-boxes. People are people nothing more nothing less despite of whatever colour they may have they shouldn't be judged upon that. Props to mr. Harry Belafonte ^_^!
Such a great humanitarian with a wonderful heart. If this country were to ever - dreaming here - hold a national debate on Race and other cultures, he would be one of the main people I would want on the Dias.
I thought sure Mr.Harry was going to say CarmenJones but then again he did drop his fiancé with the quickness once he was put in a situation withCarmen played byDorothyDandridge.Very interesting comment he said about Porgy&BessGreat point. If it wasn't for the score byGeorgeGershwin then it wouldn't have been a success.George demanded the cast be allBlack.Powerful.During those days it was very hard for Black actors to get roles.Wonder howDenzel felt when he won best actor?Very little progress.
I had the extreme pleasure of living with Harry and his wonderful family, his wife Julie, daughter Gina and my old friend David Belafonte, the man is a legend, he took me into his home for 2 months, I got to travel with them and even got to see him live at the Greek Theater in L.A.,
