All the countries outside the Reich were allied with Germany on its own accord, even the French. This includes Italy, France (Southern part), Roumania, Hungary, Finnland, etc...They were not puppet states of Germany.

Patton's view of combat was very different from Hitlers. Patton had a chivalrous aspect to him. He would not battle women, children and wanted men to be honorable and respectful. Those that gave their life for the cause was viewed by him as the greatest hero. Hitler saw people even Germans people as a means to his end. Near the end of the war Hitler said that all the good men had died for him, so let the civilians still alive be destroyed. He was evil.
