Wow, thanks for posting this. Great to see this was filmed by someone who was interested in their fingers. What a treat! Isn't Grisman on fire, and Rice so cool. Mark O'Connor virtuosic as ever, and Mr Guitar showing a few tricks. And Bela, Jerry and Rob. This is the band that the Bluegrass Brothers should have to compete with.
Even within each genre new subgenres are promoted every few years now, not like before electronic media, when people listened to the same songs for centuries, as with Folk music from around the world.Beginning with the 50's, media has brainwashed youth into thinking they have to rebel against their ancestors favorite music genres, with the b.s. "generation gap" mentality promoted by pop psychs as well. "Generation Gap" is really a marketing scam perpetrated on the public to promote consumerism.
so true dude i wish you could get your message out to people i love a lot of modern metal but i also love blues music that goes as far back as the 20s its too bad how much an effect the media can have on modern teens there being brainwashed i wish there was a way to snap them out of it if a teen like me can snap out of it so can they
cettyboy, to answer your question, because we've managed to raise two or three generations of musicall illiterate and/or disiclined since our grand and/or great grand parents' were young for one thing, and because the music industry only promotes any genre of music for a few decades before switching to another. Why? Because they'd rather have kids buy entire new collections than have them inherit older siblings' collections, which happens regardless, to some extent.
Darn, my dog was trying steal papers from behind my desk and, in trying to push Pause, I think I accidentally gave this video a "1 star" rating. :( Of course I would have gladly given it a 5...
I had a recording of this show on vhs tape that i watched for years until the tape gave out. How about posting the Bela Fleck/Jerry Douglas duet "Another Morning" from this show. thanks so much for posting these videos.
Django! These guys did an excellent job of capturing the Swing Jazz sound here, even if their specialty is Bluegrass. Shows what talent this vid showcases. Yeah, Django's influenced them all, just as he has most of the best in all the other musical genres (I say musical, because obviously most of the material in the "music" genres of (C)Rap, (J)Punk, and (SL)Pop, are not exactly musical).
Thanks. You always have the best of b;iegrass and for that matter anykind of music. I am going to see Bela next month at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia. Wow this was so great. Now if I could just get Jerry Couglas up here.
The founding fathers of acoustic music, along with one of greatest and most respected guitar players in history, this appears to be like some type of meeting on Mount Olympus of musical demigods.
Yes, this was January 1985. The 1986 show was taped on the day of the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion and Ralph Emery comes out at the beginning of the show and talks about it.
Lord have mercy! I've never seen this before. For those of you who may not know, ALL of these guys are Olympic dieties of American "roots" music. None of them are limited to any one style, they transcend styles, they, collectively, have made styles over the past 50 years. Too many highlights to mention, but Flux (Jerry Douglas) bending behind the slide at 3:30 just killed me. Tony and Chet . . . It's Tony and Chet! I'm without speech!
i agree, that bending behind the slide just hits the spot :-D
I've also never seen this before, and i must say this is some excellent blending of bluegrass and bebop(or something like that). They're viruosi but they like playing together, nice to see.
Welllllll...I don't know that I'd go THAT far (and I say that with all due respect, my friend). The solo stood on its own, and it did so flawlessly. To me all those bass licks simply kept the complexity of the chordal changes from being overwhelming. And, that's not a bad thing.
Why did you cut it off early? I have this on tape also and they played on for awhile longer and the credits roll. This was in January of 85 I think. I also have the 86 and 87 shows.
Tony Rice has the Dreadnaught, Mark O'Conner is the fiddle player, then Chet to his right obviously, Bela Fleck on the Banjer, and Jerry Douglas on the Dobro.
One question - can you tell me, left to right on the stage, who's who? You have 7 names in the description, only 6 on the stage.... Thanks!!! oh wait - I missed the bass player in back... anyway, who's who?
Sorry for being clueless about these great name musicians -- I never got to see them "face-to-face" before!
From left to right, they are David Grisman, Tony Rice, Mark O'Connor, Chet Atkins, Bela Fleck, & Jerry Douglas. Rob Wasserman is the bass player in the back on the left.
No one seen fit to comment yet so let me be the first. Musicians like these make me elated and sad at the same time. Elated cos wthe music they are producing is beyond words and for me makes me feel lifted above my mundane day to day existence. Sad cos as a musician myself it makes me realise that being able to play like them is beyond me no matter how hard I practice. Thanks for posting this it blew me away and I don't even like bluegrass :-)
I think Bela snatched Mark's jacket right before curtain. Sucks that they chopped Wasserman's solo. Ah, the life of a bass player...

Wow, what a talented bunch of guys! I'm only sorry the quality of the video is so poor, and that the video ends before the song does.

I didn't say their background was. Just that they are known for it. Of course that doesn't mean they weren't better in other genres than most.

Mark O'Connor and Chet Atkins background was not in bluegrass. Mark studied directly from Stephane Grappelli.
