So many comments about how global warming is a fallacy. Yes Michael is a little over the top with his global warming comments but global warming or not, the resource issue in the world is a serious problem that cant be denied and Earthships help address this problem. People getting sick in PA and NY because of fracking for fuel to heat houses. Mountaintop removal for coal in WV. Ogallala Aquifer drying up from overuse. Mudslides in the D.R. and elsewhere cause of clear cut. Get real people!

I haven't read all of the comments on this video. First off, this is a great commentary of the human struggle against the concept of tradition and trying to overcome human prejudices towards anything that is controversial. Michael Reynolds issues with his dissatisfies customers in spite of his disclaimers reminds me of Frank Loyd Wright and some of his designs that leaked like a sieve! Yet people still flocked to him in droves to build the next great design.
Micheal you are an inspiration to us all. Persistance is the key. Thank you Micheal and the entire crew for giving the world your imagination, education and sweat, combined to create sustainable housing!!!

thanks for uploading the entire documentary here. i purchased the dvd a few years back and passed it around to spread the word. since it's been sitting around my home unwatched for sometime now, i opted to give it away. i hope it continues to get passed around. of course i'm happy that i can come back and review it here a you tube.

He learned that a strain of oyster mushrooms can break down oil, diseal fuel, gasoline, most pesticides (as they are petroleum based), and many herbicides. As he says, not a 'magic bullet', and I'll add no excuse to abuse the biosphere, but: The tools do exist for humans to live with each other & the planet.

the tires are one post consumer commodity the plastic is another ...both aught to be re sourced into the system that produced them ...the glass on the other hand is more stable and less toxic in that there is little off gassing ...so glass is a more natural asthetically appealing building material ...that aside

@gaiagale they've tested for off gassing and found there is little to no effect. tires that are covered in cement (or whatever) have no contact with the UV light which breaks the tires down. this was a HUGE concern of mine as well. it's all on the earthship website.

I do the same thing. I have pretty lucid dreams some so real I do sometimes most times wake right up write them down or if i cant write it i draw it and show my husband. My whole life this has been happening. When working in the graphics engineering field I did this. I would apply it to work. Now it's more of making sense of things waking and saying Oh yeah thats why & move on.

A number of great ideas, the best one being the freedom to have & try new ideas! In the long term, recycling aluminum cans may be better for the environment. Doubt the plastic bottles will hold up; they are not uv stable, for instance, but could be great for emergency shelter. Glass is durable, and eco-friendly: it comes from sand & will return to sand. Kudos to M. Reynolds & his team for 'thinking outside the box'!
Challenge: if all the standard houses that have been built in the US since the the 'energy crisis' of 1972 had simply been oriented for maximum solar gain in winter & minimum in summer (long side with windows facing south) how much energy would have been saved? Add deciduous shade trees on the east, west, & south and a windblock of evergreens against prevailing winds - how much energy would be saved? Note: in most cases, this would have cost ZERO extra! .

the tires are one post consumer commodity the plastic is another ...both aught to be re sourced into the system that produced them ...the glass on the other hand is more stable and less toxic in that there is little off gassing ...so glass is a more natural asthetically appealing building material ...that aside

@gaiagale they've tested for off gassing and found there is little to no effect. tires that are covered in cement (or whatever) have no contact with the UV light which breaks the tires down. this was a HUGE concern of mine as well. it's all on the earthship website.

It's a different attitude with a mindset that goes something like this: "I'm doing this work for free, but it's nice since I can work at my own pace on my own schedule. I do the same thing. I have pretty lucid dreams some so real I do sometimes most times wake right up write them down or if i cant write it i draw it and show my husband. My whole life this has been happening. When working in the graphics engineering field I did this. I would apply it to work. Now it's more of making sense of things waking and saying Oh yeah thats why & move on.

A number of great ideas, the best one being the freedom to have & try new ideas! In the long term, recycling aluminum cans may be better for the environment. Doubt the plastic bottles will hold up; they are not uv stable, for instance, but could be great for emergency shelter. Glass is durable, and eco-friendly: it comes from sand & will return to sand. Kudos to M. Reynolds & his team for 'thinking outside the box'!

Challenge: if all the standard houses that have been built in the US since the the 'energy crisis' of 1972 had simply been oriented for maximum solar gain in winter & minimum in summer (long side with windows facing south) how much energy would have been saved? Add deciduous shade trees on the east, west, & south and a windblock of evergreens against prevailing winds - how much energy would be saved? Note: in most cases, this would have cost ZERO extra! .

Some municipal regulation are voted with the interests of the corporaitons (lobby) in mind, to force people to buy houses already built (and conform to regulations) by the same corporations that pushed in favor of such regulation.
Lack of regulation is what led to the last financial crisis...
So, regulation is not the problem. Corruption and not enough GOOD (or people's) regulation is the problem.
