I listened to a BBC Radio 2 interview and he said he wrote about 19 versus to this song but had to cut it down. i just wish somewhere there was a recording of all the versus, this song is just so special.

I've always been a huge Cohen fan (thanks mainly to my mum) but felt, begrudgingly, that Buckley had the edge on this one. Until the night I was lucky enough to see this performance live. This is a fantastic song and credit to Cohen for writing it...but it's also one of the worst versions. For some reason John Cale then Jeff Buckley were able to bring out its full beauty similar to Hendrix with All Along the Watchtower and Joe Cocker With a Little Help From My Friends. Very occasionally a composer unearths a gem and despite their own talents they fail to polish it themselves.
