I tried that on the SNES. but nothing happend. I do remember casting that spell to see trough a wall and you see him then. I discoverd all secrets on the snes years ago. with no help guide nothing. If you play this with a walk trough you miss a hell of a game experience. Try to solve all puzzels and skip nothing. Its so awsome to discover something trust me:)
I thought it wasn't the firestaff until you put the fire gem in it? Which locked off the upper dungeon. I remember doing this ending an trying to buff my guys up to withstand the fireballs. Never worked though LOL.
I remember seeing this ending when I first played the game. Didn't know how to defeat Lord Chaos with the firestaff so I went all the way back up to the entrance only to have Lord Order kill me. :(
@floydgehrig That's exactly the same thing with me! I even saved it just before the door and tried to defeat him. I could hide at the end of the hall and then run up and attack it like crazy but nothing worked of course.

Actually if you read the manual more carefully, he is Lord Order, both Lord Order and Lord Chaos represent states of the universe that can not support life, only the combination of both allows life to exist - the Gray Lord.
The game Halls of the Dead: The Faery Tale Adventure 2 had a similar theme (the forces of Order would turn the world into a frozen wasteland, the forces of Chaos would turn it into a volcanic hell).
"Time is of the essence" ugh! overweight! I did not know weight slows my running when I was little boy xD
