  • By all great respect, Francis Ford Coppola also financed his "Apocalypse Now" fully by himself.

  • I think the editing on this video is kind of... Off...

  • I can't believe he made that comment about being in war! That does not seem like something he would say.. these TIME interviews really get the ego going I'm sure, but that was insane.

  • "Was there ever a point where you thought, 'I shouldn't be making this film?'" Herzog should have said, "Directing's not for pussies, you wouldn't understand."

  • @GreenshirtMr1023 Herzog said, during the filming, that he didn't know what he would do next, as he was unfit for directing people and films. people got killed, people were attacked.. and then there's Kinski insulting the locals by not wanting to drink out of their bowl without it being washed first. how Fitzcarraldo differs from Herzog becomes unclear in the documentary Burden of Dreams.

  • @Dagarvs Yes, I saw Burden of Dreams before I saw Fitzcarraldo, and the gradual disintegration of Herzog to where he doubts if he will make another film is evident throughout. I was making a modest joke.

  • @GreenshirtMr1023 oh! good to know it, hehe... irony is really difficult on the internets.

  • What happened to his "schnurrbart" the handle bar moustache?

    Johnny de Bangkok

  • Everything Herzog says is quotable. "If I was a soldier in a war, I would not be the one who comes back with Post Traumatic Stress." Lame interviewer though, with bad editing. Let the guy speak for fvcks sake.

  • I have a prof who looks and sounds IDENTICAL to herzog. It's crazy!

  • Holy shit! Herzog is a badass!

  • HAHAHA! "Only Men understand that..women do not understand" LOVE IT!

  • ein ''gut-mensch'' und vorbild ist der mann für mich..

  • rescue dawn was shot with 10million$ and it had a look of a 40million$ film the man is creative you dont need transformers Bay or other filmmakers we need more herzogs, nolans, rodriguez's e

  • @rapist41 I'd take Rodriguez out of there and put in Arronofsky. Honestly, we don't need more of these directors, because frankly it would become redundant. We just need better filmmakers, and the audience needs to be more open minded and educated, otherwise if the audience doesn't want it, they won't make it. We live in dark times for the ability of the human mind.

  • what a champ! such perserverance.

  • oh very true line in the end,, .. no point living without dreams, thats inspirating

  • you gonna have had to be the best one to work with crazy Kinski

  • @frankthetank112244 And to get Nicolas Cage to give his best performance in years

  • Despite its excelent title, the book could well have been called Triumph des Willens (the Triumph of Will), but... well.... maybe Leni Riefenstall and Adolf H. had the copyright on that.

I LOVE Herzog's apparently humble, gentle little persona. He is more wily and weird than all the amazon put together.

  • "It's exhilarating to be shot at without success."

  • Werner has made some of my favorite films, and I've always admired his focus and dedication, but I thought my head would explode when he said, "...I would never be one of those," referring to soldiers returning from war with PTSD. Granted he's gone through a lot making HIS films, but how does he know what it's like to be in combat month after month after month? If he wasn't joking, then he's either a total megalomaniac or senility has set in. Wow, he let me down with that gem of a comment.

  • @MsRomy51 Just read the book and check out his docs. The man will stop at nothing to achieve his goals. One of the few film makers that deserves living legend status for not only his body of work but also for his influence on other directors.

The man is as solid as a rock and doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

He's also got a really cool film school course happening.

    Simply one of the greatest.

    I'm completely biased.

  • @bungletofantomas Don't get me wrong, I totally admire his dogged determination and as I mentioned, he's made some of my favorite films. But this man continues to baffle me with some of his comments; I kind of have a love/hate relationship with him. I guess I found what he said about PTSD as a result of combat rather arrogant and ill-timed. But then he can come off as child-like sometimes.

I agree, one of the greats, but an enigma. I'm completely biased about certain directors too.

  • It's difficult, if not impossible,

to know how you would react to war.

"The man on the front is not the same man."

    ~ Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

  • @Valerian1

I agree, of course. Arrogant and 'macho' on Herzog's behalf. to come out with such a statement, no? A sensitive soul is ALWAYS (and justly) affected by the horro of man's self-destruction.

  • Just an incredible chap with an inner stability that illuminates from within. A visionary filmaker and an authentic human being. Great interview-will revisit Fitzcarrldo as soon as I can

  • Werner is quietly hilarious.

  • i cant believe he was on season 3 of the boondocks is he friends with aaron mcgruder

  • As a German American and because of all the stigma of war and ridiculous stereotypes that the Germans carry, I must say that Werner One of my heroes and a hero of Germany.

  • what. a. beast.

  • 2:15 That's what SHE said! Oh wait...

  • I actually think that the interview deals more with the responses and the person than the interviewer. :)

  • Greatest film maker of all time bar none. I needed to become 31 years old to finally understand his movies and what masterpieces and hidden gems. i was blinda nd now i see. I thank werner for giving us such inspiration and awakening our mind and making out life more complete through his art. The most touching movie that moved me the most was the Dark glow of the Mountains. Werner is giant of our time

  • This man should narrate the history of the world.

  • german legend - most loved outside of germany

  • @ProCorona I'm guessing you live outside of Germany.

  • The interviewer doesn't know shit...

  • Couldn't agree more

  • That seems to be the paradigm for interviewers.

  • luciferian

  • @stett99

    why?

  • Just like Jack London once said, I am glad that I am alive, if, for no other reason, because of the joy of seeing "Fitzcarraldo".

  • Jack London (January 12, 1876 November 22, 1916)

  • just watched Aquirre wrath of God. Absolutely fantastic. Funny in this interview is that the Indians offered Herzog to kill Kinski, verry funny. Kinski is too put it mildly a bit nutty.

  • "I was actually shot at much more seriously during other film productions so thats unpleasant". lol

  • a living legend!!!

  • The last 45 seconds of this video are proof positive that Werner Herzog is one of the great visionaries of cinema, as well as one of the bravest.

9 out of 10 filmmakers walk away when they run out of money. Herzog just willed it through just like he's done his whole career!

  • @DoubleTalkingJive Those who stick through it when they lose everything are the one's who love what they do :D

  • @DoubleTalkingJive agree 100%. He should have directed Apocalypse Now.
