Naked bike ride in Seattle, it's a charity event in which people ride bikes nude through the city. Should that charity even be banned as well? It is far more offensive than anything I have seen in any gay pride parade, disturbing too .... really disturbing. But meh, it's for a good cause and it's their form of expression so I just don't watch it, but anyone who is against gay pride parades should be against a lot of charity events as well, unless they are hypocrites.

The double standard example you gave about the "girls gone wild" is a good one. I never thought of it that way. You also see this in during Mardi Grass in New Orleans...All the Straight girls are flashing their breasts and straight guys are walking around without their shirts or half naked, yet that is seen as just people having fun and going wild.....but when gays do it then it's immoral and bad. Gay pride parades are suppused to raise awareness of LGBT people and let people know that we are really not very different from them. But i don't get how dancing half-naked helps the cause, dancing naked doesnt have anything to do with sexual orientation or gender identity. If you want to raise awareness of people who like to dance half-naked then do a pride parade about that but dont compromise the LGBT rights movement by stereotyping all of us as people who dance half-naked.

Preach, Zinnia! I went to my first Pride parade this year (I started coming out at the end of last year). It was a blast. My mom was like "I saw a Pride parade" way back when "and I was not impressed." Of course, she has, admittedly, been led to think by our WELS church of raving idiots that gay is bad (since coming out, she has started to change her attitude a lot). Yeah, there were lots of free condoms at Pride and what you said, but more than that, there was love, happiness, and kindness

Thanks for this. I work with NWA Pride in NW Arkansas. We have been sued for having a "sex" parade. I keep looking at videos of the past parades. I keep wonder where all the sex is. In this region, many still don't know real GLBT people. Just what they make up or see on TV. Heck, a third of our parade is straight allies.

The fact that some people wish to protest the parades underlines the very reason why they are still necessary. When gay folks are treated equally enough that their preference is a complete non-issue to anyone not actually looking to date them, then there won't be a need for parades or other awareness-raising antics. When people see a gay pride parade and merely shrug it off (or maybe just bitch about having to take a detour), the mission will have been accomplished.

As many people are pointing out, you are conflating two separate issues. Should these parades be used as an excuse to deny people rights? Of course not. However, I don't know too many people who think that girls gone wild is exactly a good idea, either. Many English-speaking people (me included) pronounce the "tr" in words like "train" and "triangle" as if it were "chr". "Straight" starts with a consonant cluster that includes "tr", so the S sort of gets absorbed into the "tr". My Ss aren't absorbed as much as ZJ's are, so I pronounce "straight" as "schrayt" rather than "shchrayt".

I think those who criticize parades may have a valid point. One flaw I noticed with your analogy was that while straights can be extremely promiscuous, they aren't parading for "straight pride." A pride parade is meant to represent gays, and since a lot of gays are secretive, it's the loud and proud gays that people hear. Pride shouldn't be an issue, but with this kind of practice it can become one, and I think it's wise to point out.

Naked bike ride in Seattle, it's a charity event in which people ride bikes nude through the city. Should that charity even be banned as well? But meh, it's for a good cause and it's their form of expression so I just don't watch it, but anyone who is against gay pride parades should be against a lot of charity events as well, unless they are hypocrites.

But i don't get how dancing half-naked helps the cause, dancing naked doesnt have anything to do with sexual orientation or gender identity. Preach, Zinnia! I went to my first Pride parade this year (I started coming out at the end of last year). It was a blast. My mom was like "I saw a Pride parade" way back when "and I was not impressed." Of course, she has, admittedly, been led to think by our WELS church of raving idiots that gay is bad (since coming out, she has started to change her attitude a lot). Yeah, there were lots of free condoms at Pride and what you said, but more than that, there was love, happiness, and kindness

While I am 100% pro-freedom and the overall message of this video makes sense, I'd express distaste on straight couples being so overt in public as much as I dislike some of the stuff that goes on in pride parades. Just because I'm pro-freedom doesn't mean I have to like some of the things that go on in the parades, nor do I think the rather explicit behaviors in some parades are an excuse for those who hate freedom and equality to continue to discriminate.

Thanks for this. I work with NWA Pride in NW Arkansas. We have been sued for having a "sex" parade. I keep looking at videos of the past parades. I keep wonder where all the sex is. In this region, many still don't know real GLBT people. Just what they make up or see on TV. Heck, a third of our parade is straight allies.

My daughter saw a gay pride parade in Germany. The ones here are tame by comparison. As to the right or wrongness of it? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I see nothing wrong with demanding your rights. Providing fuel for your detractors, however, would seem counterproductive. The fact that some people wish to protest the parades underlines the very reason why they are still necessary. When gay folks are treated equally enough that their preference is a complete non-issue to anyone not actually looking to date them, then there won't be a need for parades or other awareness-raising antics. When people see a gay pride parade and merely shrug it off (or maybe just bitch about having to take a detour), the mission will have been accomplished.

As many people are pointing out, you are conflating two separate issues. Should these parades be used as an excuse to deny people rights? Of course not. However, I don't know too many people who think that girls gone wild is exactly a good idea, either. Wigs, shirts off, etc, are one thing, but I don't want to watch anyone making out in front of me no matter the genders of the participants.

Many English-speaking people (me included) pronounce the "tr" in words like "train" and "triangle" as if it were "chr". "Straight" starts with a consonant cluster that includes "tr", so the S sort of gets absorbed into the "tr". My Ss aren't absorbed as much as ZJ's are, so I pronounce "straight" as "schrayt" rather than "shchrayt".

I think those who criticize parades may have a valid point. One flaw I noticed with your analogy was that while straights can be extremely promiscuous, they aren't parading for "straight pride." A pride parade is meant to represent gays, and since a lot of gays are secretive, it's the loud and proud gays that people hear. Pride shouldn't be an issue, but with this kind of practice it can become one, and I think it's wise to point out.
