@servedwithasmile No, this was the film. An announcer filled in all of the commentary.
It is cheaper to film this way. Like silent films, the director could do live editing by telling the actors how to react etc. All of the information, in any language, was added later.
i dont know if you guys feel this but watching this in color and out takes is more depressing it shows that the 50s were as miserable as the new millennium
That green color paint in the kitchen must have been EXTREMELY popular back then. It's in tons of tv shows from the 60s, and my 92 year old grandmother's rooms have been that color my entire life. It's a must have for mid-century retro look.
Wow. Just wow. After having seen the black-and-white short a million times on MST3K, it's surreal to see these actors in color. It's amazing that this footage has actually survived all these years. Thanks for finding it and posting it.
On a side note, I love the teenage son's reaction at 6:45.
The girl seems to keep forgetting one of her lines. I wonder why they choose to go with the voice over since it appears there was memorized text. that is unless they couldn't and the end afford ADR. (Audio Dialog Replacement)
My bet was the MST3K version is a copy. It may have been a lot cheaper for them to have distributed black and white copies.. Plus a new print had to be made for the voice over track. I was actually on the set of an instructional school video. The company was 3 people and guys who volunteered from our acting class. The video camera was the same as my dad's. In short these folks cut corners as much as possible ie. voice over vs production sound.
I'll speculate that no color prints of the finished film have surfaced because, in those days, for the purposes this film was used for, it would have been too expensive to provide color prints. But obviously it was shot in color. It's a shame a full color print of the finished product has never shown up.
many people back then didn't have colour TV because it was really expensive plus colour TV was not on mass production because they need to get rid of the black and white TV still selling first.
hence despite this being in colour the final product would always or mostly result in a black and white finish.
colour TV were not even affordable to everyone until 1970's.
It almost looks like they had fun shooting this, because they displayed the emotion and personality that the film ruthlessly and repeatedly insists you avoid!
I've enjoyed this film very much. Thank you for posting the outtakes in color. It is amazing to see what they did with color in 1950--bright blues and greens in the kitchen, clean white appliances.
"A Date With Your Family" (1950) was originally filmed in color, and released in both color AND black & white prints. The distributor charged schools and community groups MORE to rent the color version. This is why the B&W print is the only one available today. The footage was shot silent, with music and narration added later, 'Fank86'. The outttakes reflect this.

Anybody happen to know who the actress was playing "Daughter" ???
She was pretty cute.......
msdemos 3 months ago
It seems the out takes spent more time on the girl compared to the rest of the members of the 'family'.
How many shots of her do we really need of her washing dishes, cutting cake and pouring coffee?
Good find though.

Aw, that laugh at 3:38 is just too cute. Too bad this wasn't the version most people saw (or the MST3K version)

I can understand why there'd be no sound in the outtake video. In the video that was released, the only sound you heard was the narrator speaking.

It would have made more sense if it had sound.

So this was shot in color, but distributed in b&w? Makes sense. One of my favorite MST3K shorts, though.
ricarleite 2 years ago 3
@ricarleite I'd guess that b&w prints were cheaper than color prints to mass produce and distribute.

I love the daughter's reaction at 6:13 when she just can't help cracking up. :-)
I just wish there were sound to this. Oh well, still an interesting bit of vintage Americana.

@DrGregoryHouseIT It's possible that the original was filmed in color but subsequent copies done in b/w to save money.
