the movie makes it seem far more romantic than the book, sadly i watched the movie first and so it kinda stuck in my head as a love story. but the book is slightly arker and i do think its a great cntrast between the two :)
In my Spanish I class, one of the examples in the book included a girl named Lolita. Everybody but the teacher, seeing as she was from Colombia and apparently had several friends with that name, flipped out. It was so sad to see so many people blind to a great literary work simply because of the subject matter.
at first I had only read the book and felt a bit...disgusted at first, but after I saw the trailer of this movie I fell in love with Jeremy Irons, so I totally changed my opinion.
I was about 13 when I had this terrible crush on my music teacher, and we were quite close ( I mean we were going out - of course, "under cover"- to see movies, I went to his house... It was great, but he didn`t stay for more than one year, so nothing "big" happened. Sometimes, I really miss him.
I don't support pedophilia at all and reading the book I'm aware that Humbert raped Dolores. Love story? More like an extremely twisted tale. However the only reason I like the book is because of Nabokov's beautiful writing style. It's poetry.
You missed the point of the story. If you really think this was a love story then I don't want to know what your relationships are like.
I suppose the movie kind of made it more "romantic" than how it really was. In the book Lolita cried constantly and got angry whenever Humbert tried to touch her. It's rape, except it's even worse because Humbert was supposed to be a father to Dolores and he ended up taking advantage of her.
Yes Lolita did string him along. That's still no excuse for an adult to molest a minor. Pedophiles would constantly tell the police or families "but she was asking for it", which is pretty disgusting. I don't think you're intentionally supporting pedophilia, but I don't want anyone to think that Vladimir Nabokov was trying to write a love story. Because he actually stated that Lolita was a dark novel about a corrupt man who tried to charm his readers to sympathize with him.
The only way to truely understand the novel Lolita is to read it in its entirety. I did for a college class and loved Nobokovs writing style very much. It is a difficult read though due to sophisticated language.
I'm just reading the book for the first time, so I'm curious to see the full movie(s). It definitely portrays a relationship too complicated for most to understand. I'm halfway through, and I still can't decide if Humbert's feelings are love or lust, and if Lolita's are love or survival. Do these questions sort themselves out towards the end of the story? I'm so anxious to find out!
imo lolita is not a love story. it's too complex for me to understand completely but it seems more a story of obsession and the obsession is one way. humbert's obsession does turn into something like love but it destroys everyone. as i recall, lolita never had sex with humbert voluntarily, she did it because she was manipulated into dependence and she had to survive. this video makes it look like a standard, mawkish romance. if anything, nabokov darkly parodies that view in parts of the book.
@sleepsthemoon what you said about the story was one of the most brilliant things i ever read someone say.
i was tried to say the same thing you did but never could find the words, and you put it perfectly. so completely agreed, it's great to find someone who sees it like i see. :)
very good job. i love this movie and the song choice you use is excelent. its a wicket love story about something that should'nt have happen. hard to believe that this kind of stuff could happens.

@coralin378 first off he did not rape her, and it was definitely a love story.
Not twisted at all, a bit strange perhaps. I do agree it is poetry though

@coralin378 Okay I will admit that he was very obsessive,
but I believe that he also truly loved her. And of course he
took advantage of her, that much is obvious, but she was
not innocent either. She was constantly stringing him along,
and I believe she took advantage of him as well. And my
relationships are just fine, thank you.
