People will always surprise you - you stepped into a physically and emotionally volatile situation, without regard for you own wellbeing to help a perfect stranger... and I'm sure it shocked the people around into action. With more people like you, society will do just fine, but we are all guilty of being either too frightened, incapable or too slow to react to an obviously tumultious situation.
Very good video. I agree about two weeks ago I was having a beer on a porch and saw this guy start hitting his dog right in the face I started screaming at him and called the police on his ass but when I looked around at the other people at the bar they were all staring at me like "OMG she just did that" I just didnt understand how I became the bad guy eh.
If you have an agenda, or expect to be rewarded at some point in your life for the kind act, than it is "self-preserving". Example: Giving money to a homeless person because you hope that karma will reward you with a winning lottery ticket one day. It is not an example of the "golden rule". A good example of the "golden rule" would be..
If you gave money to the homeless person because you know that if YOU were homeless, you would want someone to give YOU money because it would ease your suffering. You see? It's our own understanding of the human condition which allows for such compassion. The "golden rule" is applied in THIS way.
AH.... ok, so... YEAH! I totally get this, and this kind of response was my original intention. I suppose it was a miscommunication on my part. My brain is fried. Too much homework... social work... I need sleep. How are you doing, by the way?
Me too, I need sleep as well. I'm doing alright. Someone posted a video response to "My View.." It's pretty awesome! I featured it on my channel page! I'm pretty excited about it! Social work, a?
Checked out the video response on your page. Awesome! Yeah. Social work. Shooooot me now. And I'm only viewing the major negatively because, well, I'm sleep deprived and it's only the second week of school.
What if you are wealthy and you give nice things to poor people for no reason? Is that okay? What if you know you'll never be homeless, but you feel that because you are so well off, it would not hurt to help others? There are so many ifs and buts that it is pointless to debate. Hey, I have twenty bucks so I'll give it to this guy. Oh shit, wait. He's got ten other poor guys around him. Damn. What then? Let's start financial aid!

To treat others as you want to be treated is NOT selfish! It is the golden rule for which we should all live by!

This is true. Thanks Jeff. Selfish wasn't the right word to use. How about self-preserving?
