It's not even close to being a perfect document, but it does set a framework. One man's belief in the C brings you Scalia's originalism, and another man's belief in the C brings you Breyer's pragmatism. And both are very smart men. My fave jurisprudence is Black's textualism.

I like the approach of Justice Story myself. I agree the Constitution sets up a framework. The original intent never considered automatic weapons. They were talking about breach-loaded weapons which is a world apart from even semi-automatic weapons or even modern revolvers. We do have to fill in some gaps. But you make a huge point with regards to wild invention. Ex: Interstate commerce interpretation.
