Hey @morningsun29. Interesting comment. There is certainly a lot to be concerned about in life.
The water troughs you see, however, are quite common here in the South on farms, and always have been, though they're usually used for horses, cows etc. to drink out of. While I'm sure it is possible for some child to get in one, I've yet to hear of it turning deadly, being that they're so shallow and all.
You know..? If you set the series high enough, you could funnel the water to spin some small turbines and harness some electricity from it as well. Just a thought.
feelytouchy67 - i am new to this - is the "bt" safe to use if you are using the water for organic veggies - it sounds like a bacteria - i have just gotten my first rain barrel and am waiting to get several more - my husband and kids think i'm nuts - it's more that i'm pissed off at the situation with oil and our surrender of our independance as individuals to the point of being convinced that we cant sustain ourselves - oops there i go again -
Hey swoop1111, thanks for asking. All the research I've read indicates it is safe for humans unless they take massive amounts of it (and even then it is hardly close to being deadly). Also: as far as I know, the BT dunks and bits are not GMO. I grow only organically myself -- and use it the water with BT in it all the time. Most organic growing outlets, like Arbico, sell Bt.
Josiah922, actually I don't have to. I use BT(Bacillus thuringienis israelensis) dunks or bits, which acts as a larvacide. BT dunks are quite cheap (about 20-25$ a year). I only use the BT with my smaller systems. With my big "concrete pond" system, I don't have to use anything. Either my two pet fish, or the coldness of the water (due to the structure covering it), or the aeration system prevents mosquitoes from breeding in it.
Just be careful because this is very dangerous if left uncovered. Children die often in buckets of water they can't get out of.

You need a lid on that thing to keep the mosquitos out
