I agree that Mickey Rourke should have won Best Actor in a Leading Role but that's not to say that Sean Penn didn't put down a hell of a performance. Both actors really gave into their characters and were well deserving of the award. Still, I do believe Rourke's performance was one for the ages and will be remembered for a very long time.
I love this movie and the great part is that you don't even have to be a fan of pro wrestling to enjoy it(even though I am) and hopefully those who dislike wrestling and have saw this movie get some insight into pro wrestling(even though that isn't what this move is about) beautiful piece of work. One of my favorites of all time.
the 80s era in wrestling was pretty cool, but i wish the Ram was real. This guy wouldve been up the top more than Hogan, Warrior, Andre the giant, superfly, and Piper
Rourke kicks ass. BUT, Penn's Milk performance was a stretch for him that he made without a single flaw. It was an utterly fearless acting display by Penn. Here, Rourke is being Rourke. Good work, but not on the same level as Penn's. IMHO
@Pleaver thats ridiculous. Sure, sean penn won the oscar, good for him. But this film was more than wrestling, it was about suffering, loneliness, etc that everyday people endure. There are some heartbreaking scenes in the film. I don't think you've seen it.
@zzzzJAGJEETzzzz I have seen it. There are some devastating moments, yes. But my point is that Rourke did not have to dig too deep as an ACTOR to deliver us this character. Penn has more range and depth as an actor. IMHO.
Mickey Rourke is the best actor of his generation, at the same level of brando, and of course much better than idiots like Sean Penn doing a movie of gay, (which I fell asleep after 15 minutes), brad pitt, george clooney, and other Hollywood clowns.
if mickey in 90 had not been so rebellious, if instead of screwing his face had been dedicated to what he does best, acting, we would be talking about the best actor in history without a doubt.
LOL I love have Darren says "Between action and cut he's great..." LOL just tells me Mickey is a royal pain in the ass otherwise.
Then again, all the great actors are complete pains in the ass to work with. Incredible film and whoever said it's not "pro" filmed is a moron. It was gritty, handheld, super 16mm all the natural light they could find, it was a $7M movie man, that's cheap for the talent that was in it.
mickey i always enjoy watching you bfore i watched u i had no kids and now i do now i understand how it feels to be alone and i dont ever want to experiance that u r the man u r a hidden treasure i guess u have to go through the shit before u make people understand who u really r you r a legend
The four greatest performances I've ever seen are Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler, Daneil Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood, Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain, and Marion Cotillard in La Vie En Rose. There are plenty of other great performances but the top four are just in a league of their own! Mickey was beyond amazing!
@coolbrett01 Hey Coolbrett, this is incredible: its seems to me that we have quite the same taste in (good)actors! Apart from Marion, who unfortunately i still didnt see in LVER, I agree with you so much. Mickey in The Wrestler (deeply moving), Heath in Brokeback (heartbreaking) but also in Monsters Ball (very underrated performance, very profound & real), and ofcourse the best actor to me:Daniel Day Lewis for TWBB (masterpiece film and finest hour in acting, but he made more): Power to them!
"The Wrestler" is proof that it doesn't take a big budget to make a truly great film. This movie counted on intelligence and soul and packs way more punch than anything Hollywood has put out there in years. Mickey Rourke's performance is one of the very greatest film performances of all time - its miraculous!
Looks like this movie is inspired from the life of Jake "the snake" Roberts.... Guys and girls, go search here on youtube about Jake the snake, and specially behind the scene stuff... There is a shot (documentary) with the snake talking to hes daughter witch is VERY similar to the one with Rourke and the girl... Damn its good to see Rourke back on the scene....he has ben dearly missed... Loved him as Marv in Sin City btw...
This movie ROCKS! Mickey Rourke is in his absolute best. He doesn't have to prove that he is a good actor but I can't help but bow to him for his performance. He still a Handsome Man.
He kicks Hollywood Ass!! I love you Mickey.. Your Craft is worth more than Millions...
saw The Wrestler yestrday- me and my friend walked out the cinema in total silence, walked down the road a little bit, then evntually started talking about it and stood there for 20-30 minutes talking about certain scenes, the sound desgin, and espcecially, of course, mickey rourkes heartbreaking performance
OMG exactly the same. I walked out of the cinemas with my 3 mates. In complete silence.......we walked to the carpark and then the first words were out of my mouth saying :"That was the best film ive ever seen!
THIS is how you make a movie! Genius on a shoestring budget! Makes most Hollywood stuff look like the garbage it is. Brando,Nickelson...Rourke!....NO SHIT!!!
I agree that most movies are shit but the dark knight i felt was rather good atleast Heath Ledger was the reason it was the editing was rather choppy yeah but Heath makes that movie what it is, but i wanna see this movie really bad just the preveiws make it my favorite movie and ive yet to see it!
dark knight wasnt bad..but to me didnt even come close to living up to the hype..i felt it dragged alot and honestly ledger was awesome in the movie, and im sure you heard this before..if he didnt die..im pretty sure we wouldnt be saying he was as good..its just the truth..but he was great..i just dont think you need to spends millions to make a great movie..the wrestler is prime example
