Disney's Animal Kingdom allows you to get a great look at these animals and many more on a jeep ride through a safari or range type setting. On the day we last visited there were students and professionals in the field studying many of the animals in the park . At least they have a more natural setting despite having humans driving through their homes all day. They are amazing to see up close.
`It was thought to be extinct in 1959 I believe...I'm glad they rediscovered it! If only they can find the Thylacine :) Thats what I really want to see .....
The okapi (pronounced /oʊˈkɑːpiː/), Okapia johnstoni, is a giraffid artiodactyl mammal native to the Ituri Rainforest, located in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Central Africa. Although the okapi bears striped markings reminiscent of the zebra, it is most closely related to the giraffe.
It is no relation to the Zebra whatsoever. But it's lower body coloring being like that of the Zebra is a powerful argument towards evolution. Clearly this camoflauge pattern appearing in more than one species of animal tells us that this pattern was perpetuated from its efficacy in preserving those who bore it.
Though Okapis appear to have equine (horse & zebra) traits, they are in fact classified under the family Giraffidae and are the only living relatives of the giraffe. To be specific, their classification is thus:
Class Mammalia, Order Artiodactyla (even-toed hooves), Family Giraffidae (giraffes and okapi), Genus Okapia, species johnstoni. I would like to say, however, that the footage was interesting and unusual with just how lively that okapi was, and the music complimented it very nicely.
Fillmed in San Diego? I used to go at least once a week to see them. Love the Okapi's!! They look like velvet plush up close. So gorgeous! They are a deep forest giraffe.
Okapis are actually not part horse or zebra. It is the only living relative of the girrafe. Most people mistake the okapis family to be of the zebra or antelope. But that is very wrong, the only thing the Okapi has in common with those animals are that they are mammals. Those who think that i am wrong are just arguing with a juinior okapi expert. TRUST ME I KNOW MY OKAPIS!!!!!!
weird but yet you see the different pats the abnormal neck size compared to a horse or zebra from the giraffe, the dark brown hair on its middle body from the horse, the strpde bottom from the zebra
God nothing evolution is responsible for that guy. God pfft always with the fictional senior citizen in the sky sad that its 2009 and people still worship fictional things.
umm then maybye i was thinking of an animal tht looks pretty much the same as tht because there all dead....... because i was pretty sure it was the okapi
I think you're thinking of the quagga. They were were a subspecies of zebra (NOT part horse/part zebra) that was only striped on the head, neck and sometimes legs. They went extinct in the late 1880's
I saw one this summer in Magical Kingdom Disney World. It's called an Okapi. And yes, they are none to be more like giraffes because of there long tongues. But they are also told to be related to Zebras and horses.
Giraffes/okapis and horses/zebras are in two different orders (artiodactyla vs. perissodactyla) . Okapis are much more closely related to the giraffe than any other animal and are not particularly closely related to zebras at all.
not sure why it says its a cross bread it was thought to be extinct but then it was rediscovered and its called a okapis (i think lol and i just read the info at the stop why writing this SHHHHIIIITTTT o well)
it's so happy! running around and doing its thing. God bless these creatures.

Not a hybrid...*sigh*
Just a relative...but the other facts were pretty straight.
Yes they are rare, they tend to be solitary creatures and live alone rather in herds. Sticking a camera on it wouldn't do anything...
kylienr 2 years ago
they arent hybrids they are an a regular animal who developed the zebra strips for camo just as the zebras did.
