Tibet was invaded in 1950. The Dalai Lama was only formally put into power right before the PLA got to Lhasa. De facto wise, the Dalai Lama was the ruler of Tibet prior to 1950.
The only point I'll concede is that it's not really fair to criticize the 14th Dalai Lama for the conditions of Tibet when he was only a child. But the point remains that Tibet was much more of a hellhole under the Lamas rule.

Tibet before 1950 was a “backward society” and its institutions were imperfect.
No one ever said Tibet before 1950 was a paradise.
I don’t think any Tibetan, inside Tibet or outside, even in their wildest dreams, would want to restore the old system intact.
But I have managed to transplant this old system to Dharamsala where I am still the God King of my serfs!
On the other hand, the Chinese government’s widespread claims that old Tibet was a kind of hell are completely true.

If you read Sun Tzu's "Art of War" and compare this to Mao's tactics, what Mao did to Tibet makes sense now. Mao was not in power for the good of the people, he was in power for himself, to strengthen his own regime, and to eliminate anything that could threaten his control over society; hence, religion was a huge inhibitor. Part of government espionage is something called "Social Engineering". Most world powers do this. This is why in college they teach "always question everything."

Their is still so much debate as to whether Tibet belongs to China originally, or if Tibet was in fact a sovereign nation. Interestingly, this is all still relating to Mao Zedong's elimination of religion when he came to power. Mao strengthened China's economy, got rid of Japanese occupation, helped China grow into world power. But why would Mao want to make all religion illegal and attack Tibet? I certainly don't believe that the Tibetans caused this, nor instigated violence. No Evidence there!

Interesting that they did not have much audio of him speaking. I heard a Canadian Broadcasting news clip of him ranting like a former German dictator.........not sure what he was saying, but he was not the usual calm and tranquil man that he is usually presented as. He must have a really good P.R. dept

Tibet was NOT part of China.
Chinese invaded Tibet in 14th century, about 100 years before Europeans invaded America Continent. The difference is, Europeans massacred more than 90% of native americans, wiped out their religion, culture and language, but Chinese didn't do that to Tibetans, so, as a consequence, the European descendants enjoy a peaceful life now a days in America, but Chinese have to suffer riots year by year.

Today, premier Wen Jiabo gives a new example with details that Dalai Lama is lying again!
Wen said, the Tibetan leader was now claiming that he never asked for removal of Chinese troops from Tibet. This was a lie because the Dalai Lama had said as much in writing in the United States and in Europe in 1987 and 1988.

Tibet was invaded in 1950. The Dalai Lama was only formally put into power right before the PLA got to Lhasa. De facto wise, the Dalai Lama was the ruler of Tibet prior to 1950.
The only point I'll concede is that it's not really fair to criticize the 14th Dalai Lama for the conditions of Tibet when he was only a child. But the point remains that Tibet was much more of a hellhole under the Lamas rule.

The fact is things were well under control in Tibet before 1949. Life in Lhasa was dominated by a huge number of religious festivals, which involved most of the citys population. 68 days of the year were taken up with festivals.
So how could things be that bad when Tibetans could spend 68 days of the year having festivals ???

There was horrible inequality before China took over. The Dalai Lama & priest class lived in a palace in utter luxury while the poor were nothing but serfs living in extreme poverty.
Not to mention the tortures used in Tibet, which included eye gouging and disemboweling people.
I'd rather live under the Chinese rule than the Dalai Lama's rule any day.

Tibet was not harsh after 1913. For example Tibet abolished the DEATH penalty about 1913.
In fact the floggings were seen as too soft (which was the worst thing that happened)

Well I see your not going to dispute that there were serfs pre-China Tibet.
Tibet isn't and never was the glorious country that a lot of people think it is. When the Chinese invaded they at least built up the infrastructure, introduced secular education and gave them running water and electricity.
Tibet is better off now then they ever were (not saying that it's perfect) but try not to romanticize pre-1950 Tibet as some freedom loving country.

Infrastructure was built to LOOT Tibet.
Tibetans don't want a communist education. That is why they risk their lives going over Nangpa Pass when they are as young as 6 years old.

That is complete BS for lack of a better term. Private schools have existed throughout China for a few decades now. The Tibetans absolutely have control over their education if they do not wish to send their kids to state run schools.

Your right Tibetans don't have control of Tibet and neither should they without a independence referendum. Tibet has historically been politically apart of China. The self-declared independence by the 13th Dalai Lama was not recognized by any countries and therefore they were never a legitimate country.

autonomy52, I dont think so. At most u can say the most Tibeatans IN EXILE. Don't think the Dorje Sugden people particularly loves the guy. As for the rest, since China has closed down the region and supposively enslaved all the Tibetans within Tibet, guess information is hard to come by, isn't it? If the Tibetans weren't as badly treated by the Chinese as u guys claim, then why should they love DL? If they love DL so much, why didn't they fight the Chinese to the death to save DL?

It seems one valuable outcome of the Dalai Lamas plight is that destiny has called upon him and all great teachers of Tibet to teach to a global audience now. As if to duplicate Tibet all around the world in order to multiply it. I myself have benefited from the Dalai Lamas teachings of peace and truth, just as I have the examples of the monks and families who follow him. The truth always finds a way to the light.
