no i never used a air pump or stones as long as there is sufficient water surface movement you will be fine

the internal pump was a juwel 1500lph power head and i also used an external fluval 4 that was 1400lph

water clarity was never an issue

@carrc956 I must agree, with the water movement at the top aireates the air plenty, as well if you go live plants, that does quite a bit as well. No need for power heads less you like the water-movement look in your tank, or have them attached to a filter, i do it because it gives my fish something to swim against, but its pointed to the top so it does not disturb them or push to hard as to stress the fish As long as you leave a good say half inch to 1\4 inch between water and filter you be fine
