@planetery i did a lot of research on this, bob weir never joined the club. he played there once, which i do find contradicting since richard nixon was a member.... but i highly doubt bob weir would join a satanic organization. get yo propaganda straight
Has anyone ever met him just like on the street or something? Just wondering what he's like in real life. I've met Phil and he was honestly one of the nicest people I've ever seen.
@rawkus1167 Bob's a total gent. People have even taken advantage of him over the years, cos he always tries to do all he can to be agreeable to folks' demands... He's actually kind of quiet, with a great deep mind few people get. I dig him since decades, and never have lost respect for him. I cannot say the same for a lot of folks i met. True gent that took entirely too much shit from fans over the years, imho.
@rawkus1167 second that on Phil. good man. he once totally saved me from being stranded somewhere tho of mi. from home. Fun guy. Respect. :-) Those two, w Brent, used to be the ones that spent time having after show parties in hospitality suite of their hotel with fans. Have some beers to relax from the show. Sociable lot ;-)
I love all phases of the Dead's career. With that said, Brent was, in my humble opinion, by far the best keyboard player they ever had. He always had a fantastic lush sound, he was incredibly intuitive and had a very unique voice. Pig pen was on again/off again, Keith G & Bruce W. were good, but not great, & Bruce Hornsby seemed more like a fill in that didn't really fit too well, but got them by. But then again, it's just a matter of taste. I love Zappa, Beefheart & Ornette too, so go figure.
I liked Pigpen best, Brent was a fantastic rock n' roller, but he sounded a bit too Greg Allman for my tastes. I don't think it fit well with the dead.
As for the "Hate Brent" folks, I'm not a giant Brent fan, but he was a really good musician. I didn't adore him with the Dead, but that's not the same as thinking he sucked. He was very good, and if he didn't fit your taste, well, opinions are like sweaters...everyone has at least one.
as far as the fuck brent thing goes I'll put a wager that the people who posted that have never really amounted to anything in their lives and Brent was a monumental musician, you don't know how easy it is,,,,,
Bobby is cool. I'm watching this and I start to say to myself that I recognize that view and the furniture. I stay in that hotel on UWS about once a month. I think I've stayed in that room! Alan Light= one of the best rock journalist on wheels.
read it again...wow.. it amazes me how people read into things online and just interpet whatever they what however they want... you are naive if you do not think the dead got FAMOUS because of the drug culture that surrounded them... where you get all this other stuff about ONLY reason and frat boys etc is beyond logic so quit wasting my time replying to my comments and get a life man
drugs and music are so closely intertwined it is rather naive to make any assertions really. Psychedelic drugs certainly helped to deepen their lyrics and add complexity to their sound, so you could think of drugs as the inspiration for some great music.
That's about as far from the truth as you can get. Maybe you and your fraternity buddies did that, but when it was all said and done it was the music, hands down, that people went for. Why would you buy a ticket to just go and do drugs? It doesn't take a ticket to a concert to do that.
Read what again? You imply that people went to the shows "to buy and do drugs" . That would lead me to believe you think that's the ONLY reason. That's utter nonsense.
The truth is simply that ppl. who dont do drugs/ aren't into them will NEVER understand what ppl who do drugs experience when they feel good and are listening to their favorite music. Which is perfectly fine (they're loss lol) but it takes all kinds to make this big earth spin. i suppose
Perhaps, but the last time I checked I'm getting a Ph.D. in clinical psychology right now, so, if I am in fact an idiot with half a brain that would be pretty impressive eh'?
There's truth in that but you don't have to do any substance to appreciate the music. I've done shows straight and sober and totally zonked as well. The straight shows were just as good....different dimension really because now the music takes you out of yourself and gets you high. Now THAT is special!!!!
Totally agreed. I myself have done shows straight and totally faced as well and they are both enjoyable in their own way. And you certainly don't need to be high to enjoy good music.
Bobby makes the point of people thinking Jerry was some kind of guru or whatnot. I think Jerry couldn't handle that being thrust upon him, and needed an escape which he found in things that weren't good for him, which consequently led to his early death. In a way the fans smothered him with too much adulation.
what r u talking about, u don't know what caused his addiction and he didn't have an early death, sure he wasn't terribley old but he wasn't that young either.
well let's see, most people who get into a pattern of regular use of heroin eventually become addicted. If you consider that his fellow band mates are now going out on tour after almost 14 years after Jerry's death, I'd say he did die early.
He's sportin the beard because he's showing his love and respect for his best friend. That beard is a tribute to Jerry. I saw Ratdog twice this year, and both shows KICKED ASS
I never realized how difficult it is to to direct an interview. Like seriously, this is just awful. God bless bobby though.

your naive if you think being around lots of drugs can keep a band famous globally for decades and deacdes.

ok then the drug subculture had NOTHING to do with the band getting famous... happy now?
