The problems: weather, motorcyclist not maneuvering out instead of sounding the horn, having a white van, with no rear view mirrors,,windows to blindspot check and a tiny driver/passanger side mirror. Solution: Avoid joy riding without checking the weather at night in the rain, be ready to maneuver out of any situation, instead of sounding the horn and staying put, Submit a law change to have delivery vehicles mount rearview mirriors, rear windows, larger side mirrors and backup sound,or camera.
I'm glad that he got out, apologised & helped the motorcyclist. He cared about him & helped him move his bike out of the way & seemed very sympathetic. No hate at all towards the van man. It's highly possible that the van driver did look but just didn't see him as it's dark & the bike was quite close.
Neither party is at fault, in my opinion, & I'm glad that the situation was handled peacefully.
To be honest though... Even if he did wrong and reversed (which some people have said is illegal there) you rode in right in the middle of the lane where he couldn't see you in his mirrors. He shouldn't have reversed so fast and should've stopped at the sound of your horn
@TheWoodyman95 wasnt at all the riders fault, by the look of the road it is probably one way...the van braked to a stop at the end of the road and then started reversing back up(not legal)...the rider wasn't too close, the van driver didn't look.
@Nick58593 IT IS the responsibility of every car/bike owner on the road to make sure there car/bike is totally road worth including being able to see and indicate to all vechiels, its his mistake if he cant see them, if you dont like it GET OFF THE FUCKING ROAD YOU MAGGOT!!!
@Nick58593 thats why they invented windows. If your stupid enough to drive a car without them take responsiblity when you reverse. It would be different if he ran over a child now wouldnt it.
Thats your fault, you rode right into a REVERSING van, maybe the BRIGHT WHITE lights on the back could have clued you in, he was reversing long before you came up behind him.
@XxStorefrontx Clearly the bikers fault, which is why the insurance paid in the bikers favour.....It's not me in the video, but if you look at the reflection under the van it's easier to see that the reverse lights come on at 0:10. Van driver reversed up a 1 way street without looking, how can it be the bikers fault?
@svengalie The van was clearly in full reverse already, and besides that, why would you come up that close to a van in the first place, he could have been trying to parallel park, and who cares about the insurance ? they always pay in the favor of the bikers if the other vehicle is a certain weight class (In Hawaii anyway this part of the argument may be invalid in your location)
And look I even rewatched the video, the vans white reverse lights are ALREADY ON at 0:06 when he turns the corner.
@XxStorefrontx I can't work out if you're a bad troll or just plain dumb. It's not me in the video, I have no reason to be butthurt but the rider isn't at fault. The van driver is driving the incorrect direction on a one way street without looking.
And your comment about the reverse lights are incorrect, the brake lights look white. Look again but watch the reflection in the road to see when the reverse lights come on.
@svengalie WRONG those are the reverse lights, and let me tell you how I know that...the POSITION of the lights on the back of the car, we own that exact kind of van for our business, the break lights are higher up the back of the vehicle by a lot. A large vehicle with any indicator lights on, break, reverse or otherwise, is something any person who has a motor bike license is taught "Not to approach at speed" or stop within 2 car lengths behind,
@XxStorefrontx Add to that the fact that the van was already moving backwards by the time the biker made the approach, that is just bad biking plain and simple, I've been riding for 14 years so don't give me your bull, even in bad weather something like that is nearly impossible to miss.
@svengalie No I'm saying the biker wasn't paying attention to what was in front of him, just because the camera caught it, doesn't mean he was paying close enough attention to the road. In other words, in this case he was a bad driver.
@svengalie Yeah I know you are used to going "Durrrrr Hurrr hurr hurr" in real life while your trying to think of something but try not to type it in.
And as for those other two lights, those are 2 of the 5 brake lights, the van had to slow down for some-reason, most likely to adjust to try to fit in the space
See the way the vans lights are is as so.... 1 bar break light on the roof, two break lights, bellow that the blinkers, below that the reverse lights, then the "Low point"
@XxStorefrontx so what you're saying is this. The bike turns the corner and the van already has his reverse lights on. The bike approaches then at 0:10 the extra lights you see come on (seen better in the reflection of the road) are BRAKE lights.....And the van manages to reverse at speed whilst still braking?
@svengalie Well due to the weather quality of the video its hard to tell if the lights stay bright or go back into dimmer mode, it is possible that he was tapping the breaks intermittently and then around before the time he hits the bike just says screw it and reverses at speed.
Although I did notice two more things The Vans indicator signal isnt on so the biker wouldnt have known that van was going to try and park in the space
and depending how the mirrors are adjusted thats a blind spot
@svengalie Where in the hell did you get that from ? You know what that one comment convinced me that I am arguing with a complete retard. and after reading the comments there are some other people saying what I said about the Biker being at fault. So I'm just going to leave it at that.
@svengalie And besides every thing I pointed out in my prior comment, there is a huge ass space there, this biker was the negligent one, the van was is reverse gear when he turned the corner and it was CLEARLY attempting to parallel park, not to mention by the looks of it, it is a black motorcycle so its HARD to see.
@svengalie I had a biker crash into my van a few years ago and I was stationary. The court still found in his favour. And before you start making a big thing about me not knowing about bikes, I ride bikes when I'm not at work, so I can say with some degree of authority that he was 100% in the wrong, but still the court ruled against me. Figure that one out.
Brilliant example of why more cyclist and motorcyclists are buying helmet cams. He's full of apologies now but when it comes to court it will be " I braked and he hit me from behind"
@Ryguy0110 turns out he couldn't see that. If you think he saw that do you think he might ride headlong into the situation? Personally, having ridden for many years I can fully sympathise with the situation, a dark night, a foggy rainy visor. Very poor visibility coupled with someone breaking the law, it doesn't make for a good mix.
I find your comment ignorant rather than offensive, and it wasn't even me in the video so I have no reason to be butthurt.
@svengalie you said it a rainy foggy night so i take it the biker could not see a (big white van) when we can see it looks to me like the vans was going to park in the space or the van driver looking in a tiny mirrors as the biker comes up behind the van in the middle where the van driver cant see then pulls up gets hit then blames the van driver i bet he got a nice big pay out
Couldn't you have taken evasive action and pulled to his left to avoid him... it looked liked his reversing lights were on from a distance... so you had some idea of what he was about to do... you are always taught on your lessons to expect the unexpected... no disrespect to you... i used to have a bike also!
Couldn't you have taken evasive action and pulled to his left to avoid him... it looked liked his reversing lights were on from a distance... so you had some idea of what he was about to do... you are always taught on your lessons to expect the unexpected... no disrespect to you... i used to have a bike also!
@4crevis Looks like a one way street, he could have been parallel parking on either side so he may have just got in the way. He over shoots a empty space on the right which Im guessing the rider assumed he was about to fill. Also judging by the speed he was reversing at he was using the accelerator not the clutch - something he would have been taught on his lessons not to do. I say all of this as someone with 6 months experience on the road tho, so I could very well be wrong! :)
hence my point in video 1. just a typical white van. all white van drivers are idiots anyway, not a single one can drive. i've only been riding for almost 6 months and how many near misses i've had with white vans. they shouldn't be on the road.
is one even allowed to back up in the middle of the street? I know in Belgium it isnt, unless you want to paralell park and then you need to check behind you and have your indicator on :s
It's funny all the people saying the biker was in the vans blind spot, the driver shouldn't have been backing up like that in the middle of the street anyway.
Besides, it's not technically a "blind spot", the biker had only pulled up into a traffic queue behind the vehicle ahead so it can't really be said that he was at fault. It would have been sensible to stop to one side but he wasn't doing anything illegal.
And FYI, a Smart Fortwo is 19 inches narrower than a Transit. Just saying.
i would punch him i swear .. i would go reckless on van drivers .. they all sckkk .. all of them.. i drive a car and have a bike license as well but due to those "animals" on the road (i live in London so u know) its jst too dangerous..
@9andrei2 I think you'll find that's due to cunts in general on the road, no matter what they are driving. To be honest I find volvo, bmw, saab and 4x4 drivers far worse that van drivers. Also quite a few other bikers are total turds on the road. A dick is a dick no matter what they do.
that is absolutley ridiculous. the white van man and taxi driver are complete and utter fools. i drive and i always make sure i look out for bikes especially. taking my motorbike lessons as well and stuff like this does wind me up but wont put me off thats for sure
Okay, it was technically the van drivers fault, but that doesn't entirely negate your own mistakes. You ended up with the smashed bike and greatest risk of injury, while both might have been fully prevented by a greater effort of staying within the van driver's view (especially considering his obvious limited visibility behind the vehicle) and remaining further back from a vehicle clearly preparing or maneuvering to park. Neither of those for his sake, but for yours.
What a prick, just because there bigger and in a 3 ton shell means they own the road, more people should ride a bike to make them realize just how dangerous it can be because of those twats
it hard to see exactly in the vid. But when ur behind a vehicle like a van with no rear view mirror its best to go off to the side a bit so the side mirrors can easily see u. If u can see the side mirrors clearly then the driver should be able to see u. providing he looks ofc.
Sven next time someone reverses into you please try to speak a little clearer, it is very difficult for us to understand when your screaming haha, seriously Ive seen this a few times and its bad every time and how you never fired into him is brilliant restraint, ride safe bud
Maybe he could have swung out to the left/right side to show his headlight to the van drivers wing mirror when he saw the reversing lights? Not saying the biker was at fault, no way, just looking at how this bump could have been avoided for future reference.
@Hornet0biker I drive an 18ft transit, if he checked his mirror before putting the van in reverse he would have seen the bike without a doubt, but i think if i find myself in this situation on my bike in the future then i'll take your advice and swing to the right (but could increase the risk of someone walking into the road, or car door opening, or car pulling out). Unfortunately, motorcycling is largely about compensating for other people's crap driving.
@Hornet0biker i do ride chilled until someone does something like this too me cus theyre dumb as fuck, ive been riding 12 years so must be doing something right
Of course the van driver couldn't see him, how could he, he didn't look. When the reverse lights come on the bike is still far enough behind the van to be in his mirrors. My guess would be mr white van man was tired coming home from work and thus not paying enough attention.
This happened to me last week except the driver was in a massive 4x4 damage to the bike and not me thankfully and the driver had no problem paying for the famage
I'd be throwing all the F's about! Pretty restrained Sven if you ask me! Although did you hit your nuts? Coz you went up a few octaves! Be cool! Hope the legs doing ok?
recently came off my bike on a corner, the council had done pothole repair, and handn't cleaned all the rubble of the road. As i turned in corner, back wheel lost traction and out i span. All i have is photo's i think a video would of been a good piece of evidence.
What a fucking asshole. Like so many people out there that do things like this, I bet he didn't even look. And if he genuinely couldn't see him then surely you'd immediately brake as he heard the horn!
Sorry, what's the deal here? The bicycle looks like it didn't stop and just hit the back of the van. Really, what's the story here cause I can't make it out of this clip.
Noo! The bike! That van driver is a prick. After almost killing somone 'Oh sorry mate I didn't see ya.' I understand that everyone makes mistakes but this guy seems completely oblivious to the gravity of what he's just done.
I swear to god on my first big bike. I had a white van man do the same thing only in day light. I thought he was going to reverse into a parking space to the right to but he didn't. Thankfully too, he got straight out & helped me & admitted liability to his insurance. Although I was gutted my bike got smashed up, I wasn't hurt & I had a quick & simple insurance pay out.
sounds like pee wee herman lol i got the best story i got cut off on the 215 in san benardeno almost put me into the wall lucky for m their was a highway patrol 5 car ahead i seen him and got him to get the idiot female driver with her kids in the car not only will this save bikers lives but also her own and her kids some times the highway patrol here are good guys
I sooooo wish I'd had my camera on when I got demolished! I've no doubt that it'd have caught my 4X4 drivers reg and been able to trace him for insurance and prosecution... as it stands... he's sleeping quite nicely at night I've no doubt!!!
@svengalie 51 week old Yamaha 125, (L plates on as the wifey's learning), total write off, he was away off up the motorway before I finished bouncing down the tarmac! Insurance replaced it for me when I paid my XS, had to buy my own new riding gear...
V-ehicle E-vent R-ecorders are apparently all the rage in the US for this very reason... but not over here yet, and certainly not at a reasonable price, and not waterproof/bike friendly!!!
@greg1800 £500 gets you a fully submersible and waterproof unit that can record for 8 hours at a time. It also comes with a "blackbox" facility so it can record in loops.
to be fair though you couldn't see his mirrors so he wouldn't of been able to see the bike. Nothing else the biker could of done though and good use of the horn :(
i can feel a sudden case of whiplash coming on lol where did i put that number for cliams direct ha ha ..hey a think ive just been traumatized just watching this dont think i can ever get on a bike again now ..now where is that number lol just kidding
see Svengalie, if you'd have been wearing high vis overally.....ohh no wait.....i guess its because you didnt have your light on.....no wait....you were speeding....no you were still.
It's the Honda one, aftermarket ones can be found on eBay. I think the screen is a big improvement - it deflects the air up and out & in the rain it's only my elbows & helmet that get wet.
Heated grips are good & work best paired with gloves that have thinner insulation on palms than on the back. I use Held 'lobster claws' which are a cross between gloves & mittens.
Started riding again in March after taking a break due to bad weather in Jan / Feb - glove & grip combo is great.
It looks like he could have seen the biker , if only he had looked, probably only looked in one mirror at best. As a rule of thumb always make sure you can see the mirrors of a lorry or solid doored van when you are behind them. That includes cars. I had to rescue one that parked directly behind an artic, totally invisible to the driver. In your friend's position, I think everyone would expect the van was going to reverse into the space rather than hurtle past it.
Just glad no one was hurt and the driver was reasonable guy nearly did this to me in a car park, drove past a space slapped the brakes on and just started backing up, bastard tried to make out like it was my fault, just lucky i got out of the way in time.
yea yea yea. well beings the guy was on the bike behind the drivers side he definetly had no excuse. plus the van frickin shot backwards. y not ease in reverse

Yet another SMIDSY - the driver even says the immortal words.
Like the video says - "You didn't see him because you didn't look"
A message to all idiot drivers: HE DIDN'T SEE HIM BECAUSE HE DIDN'T LOOK. GET IT???
What a waster

But I still haven't found what he'd been waiting for. There was plenty of room to swerve to the right.

staying the blind spot of a van? nice....
ok i hav'nt been riding for long, but vans have VERY poor side and rear vis and BIG blind spots. Both driver and rider at fault in this one.
R5P205 11 months ago
that is absolutley ridiculous. the white van man and taxi driver are complete and utter fools. i drive and i always make sure i look out for bikes especially. taking my motorbike lessons as well and stuff like this does wind me up but wont put me off thats for sure
shari7manu 11 months ago
this is definately why all riders and drivers should use a dashcam! couldnt imagine behing in a bike when that happens!
rextinctione 1 year ago
Okay, it was technically the van drivers fault, but that doesn't entirely negate your own mistakes. You ended up with the smashed bike and greatest risk of injury, while both might have been fully prevented by a greater effort of staying within the van driver's view (especially considering his obvious limited visibility behind the vehicle) and remaining further back from a vehicle clearly preparing or maneuvering to park. Neither of those for his sake, but for yours.
stewartx5 1 year ago 2
What a prick, just because there bigger and in a 3 ton shell means they own the road, more people should ride a bike to make them realize just how dangerous it can be because of those twats

shadownight003 1 year ago
it hard to see exactly in the vid. But when ur behind a vehicle like a van with no rear view mirror its best to go off to the side a bit so the side mirrors can easily see u. If u can see the side mirrors clearly then the driver should be able to see u. providing he looks ofc.

Maybe he could have swung out to the left/right side to show his headlight to the van drivers wing mirror when he saw the reversing lights? Not saying the biker was at fault, no way, just looking at how this bump could have been avoided for future reference.
Hornet0biker 1 year ago
@Hornet0biker I drive an 18ft transit, if he checked his mirror before putting the van in reverse he would have seen the bike without a doubt, but i think if i find myself in this situation on my bike in the future then i'll take your advice and swing to the right (but could increase the risk of someone walking into the road, or car door opening, or car pulling out). Unfortunately, motorcycling is largely about compensating for other people's crap driving.

Wrong place on the road.. he was hidden behind the van driver could never see him in the mirrors.
spook187 1 year ago
Of course the van driver couldn't see him, how could he, he didn't look. When the reverse lights come on the bike is still far enough behind the van to be in his mirrors. My guess would be mr white van man was tired coming home from work and thus not paying enough attention.

@svengalie 51 week old Yamaha 125, (L plates on as the wifey's learning), total write off, he was away off up the motorway before I finished bouncing down the tarmac! Insurance replaced it for me when I paid my XS, had to buy my own new riding gear...
V-ehicle E-vent R-ecorders are apparently all the rage in the US for this very reason... but not over here yet, and certainly not at a reasonable price, and not waterproof/bike friendly!!!
greg1800 1 year ago
@greg1800 £500 gets you a fully submersible and waterproof unit that can record for 8 hours at a time. It also comes with a "blackbox" facility so it can record in loops.
It's even motorcycle mounting friendly.

@Gizmorun ive had the same accendents people reversing without looking in there mirrors
stealth1692 2 years ago
Yep, CBF 125 with Honda tall screen. I also have heated grips & the Honda rack & top box.
Makes for an excellent, economical commuter especially as the entire trip is on 30 mph roads.
boldinn 2 years ago
is the high screen much of an improvement?
i was thinking of getting one, it is honda or other aftermarket?
heated grips next year maybe...depends on how far away the shops are.
Gizmorun 2 years ago
It's the Honda one, aftermarket ones can be found on eBay. I think the screen is a big improvement - it deflects the air up and out & in the rain it's only my elbows & helmet that get wet.
Heated grips are good & work best paired with gloves that have thinner insulation on palms than on the back. I use Held 'lobster claws' which are a cross between gloves & mittens.
Started riding again in March after taking a break due to bad weather in Jan / Feb - glove & grip combo is great.
boldinn 2 years ago
It looks like he could have seen the biker , if only he had looked, probably only looked in one mirror at best. As a rule of thumb always make sure you can see the mirrors of a lorry or solid doored van when you are behind them. That includes cars. I had to rescue one that parked directly behind an artic, totally invisible to the driver. In your friend's position, I think everyone would expect the van was going to reverse into the space rather than hurtle past it.
Dashdecent 2 years ago
Just glad no one was hurt and the driver was reasonable guy nearly did this to me in a car park, drove past a space slapped the brakes on and just started backing up, bastard tried to make out like it was my fault, just lucky i got out of the way in time.

a bike is nowhere near a car, nor should a bike be allowed to have the same driving rights as a car.
if i were in a car, the van would see me, because i would not be hidden behind his back doors.
jimtimlisa 2 years ago
he should have cheaked his damn mirrors the moment he started to back up 0:11
at that point the biker was like 30 ft away
also, do you own a van like that? well i do and you need to be very, VERY close to the van's ass so the driver wont see ya..
