I have a story about how smart my beagle is, I have a little

vacation home in arkansas, we go down there frequently. Last trip she forgot her favorite tennis ball there, but when we came back the next time, the first thing she didnt was search the house for her ball for 2 minutes, she came back to me, wagging her tail ferociously and with her tennis ball in her mouth. My parents have a beagle. They're very food motivated dogs, and their noses rule their brains, but beagles have great dispositions. They are very people friendly dogs, but beagles are drama queens. They go hysterical when they are lonely or hungry or need to go out to walk or do their business, but they don't complain or whimper if they are injured. Beagles are VERY smart, but they are also easily distracted and self-willed, especially when they are tracking.

@appletickle I remember someone telling me that their dog was exactly that after asking her to sit at nearly a year old. I spent 30 minutes with her and she could not only sit, but give her paw and she very nearly had 'down'. It was satisfying to hear "Oh, I didn't know she could do that." after I informed them that their dog was actually very smart and eager to please. I'm convinced that the ratio between stupid dogs and willfully ignorant, impatient and lazy owners is about 1 to a million.
