  • lulz ubuntu is the root source for producing morons like Rokalacs.

hey moron turn off your sudo and post your ip see how fast it gets compromise. now with another system turn sudo on and see the difference.

  • @tofu336 Because anybody gives a shit about hacking your computer. YOU ARE NOT IMPORTANT.

  • ubuntu is probably the worst distro out there... it only gives linux a bad name...

  • @twitch6000: You know, I've heard a lot of people say this but I've never had a straight answer. Why does Ubuntu, a distro that is trying to be easy for everyone to use, give Linux a bad name?

  • @LTS1287 Simple it false advertises. Aswell as the community.

They say anyone can use it when that is just wrong. Some people get scared just seeing something else other then windows.

Not to mention since it is a "noob friendly" distro,it sure causes more trouble then one would think.

Then there is canonical who gives basically nothing back upstream, not that it is required, but seeing as the community thinks they are god in the world of linux, you would think they would give something back.

  • @twitch6000: I'm fairly certain that most people can use it. I've got friends that have installed Ubuntu for their mothers and grandmothers. Linux isn't just for techies anymore. Being noob friendly brings more people to the Linux community, which in turn may lead to more support from manufacturers.

As for Canonical, I've heard complaints like that from Debian developers but afaik Ubuntu does give back just not in the way that Debian developers would like.

  • @twitch6000 You just fails so hard, I've shown ubuntu to some ppl I know who haven't even seen windows before and they liked it so much with the categorized menus (original gnome menus), ubuntu software center, etc (I got to get rid off that annoying password asking all the time, everyone just hates it and it protects you from nothing btw). After a week I've shown them windows and they were just like: omg where the f* is this and that, how do i do that. So yeah, ubuntu IS a user friendly distro.

  • @Rokalacs Sudo does nothing? Is that what you just said ... wow you sir are stupid.

Sudo is a great program that makes it where no one can access your main files without the password. Without it you are wide open for attacks, getting any kind of malware, and getting hacked.

Sudo is also great for limiting what a user can do. (Which is always needed in a buisness).

You know I might dislike ubuntu, but atleast I know what I am talking about. Unlike you.

  • @twitch6000 Yes, just as you said, sudo does nothing. Do you seriously think that one little password will protect you from that stuff if anyone really wants to get into your system? You're the dumb here sir.

  • @Rokalacs Wow way to overlook what I said. Sudo is not only for protection, but for administrative use.

Here let me ask you this.

Would you want anyone to access your files in your buisness such as charts,income,etc..?

    No I didn't think so.

See with sudo you can allow the user to still be in your network but limited to only what they should be doing.

Besides I thought it wasn't easy to hack Linux anyways ... Like all you Linux youth say.

Oh well continue using your shitting Distro

  • @twitch6000 "Wow way to overlook what I said." look who talks... I wrote about home-dekstop use in my first comment and you came up with business-office usage of Linux... For simple home usage I'd bet all my money that shitty one password won't protect you from anything. The first security line is the user and if it's just as dumb as you then I agree the system is shitted. I'd not personalize this "talking" but oh well, what do you expect when you talk shit, nerdyboy.

  • @LTS1287 Using bleeding-edge packages and claiming to be "stable" is not really my idea of a good desktop OS for the average consumer.

Therefore, it gives Linux a bad name in the minds of the average consumer.

  • This OS is not fun!! I just want to double click and go and when a hardware is not recognized (wireless adapture) ur screwed. Windows 98 is better than this. It

s no wonder why linux the os that was suppose to take out microsoft fell on it's face. I have linux here beside me and i can't even find the spot where i can see how much hard drive space it's taking.

  • @accident777: If you can't find out how much disk space is left you must have not used Ubuntu for more than an hour. Disk space is shown at the bottom of the file manager window or you can use the disk space analyzer to find out which files are taking up the most space.

Did you even bother asking for help on the forums when you found a certain piece of hardware malfunctioning?

I'm fairly certain that this is another case of PEBCAK.

  • @accident777 You can do nearly everything with your so called double click except gaming. Failing at first time (with a shitty PC [all my laptop hardware got recognized perfectly]) and then giving up is just laughable. After using windows for at least 12-14 years it took about a week to get used to linux back then when ubuntu didn't even recognized NTFS partitions so I had to edit some files manually from a tutorial. Nowadays everything is fine except KDE. Try not to give up next time...

  • Karmic was rather troublesome to me. The main problem being internet connection at first and Grub after a while. Good thing was to see that my webcam was working better with Karmic what just makes me hope it will work fine with the next release and maybe without the problems a had with Karmic.

  • You must be kidding Karmic is terrible! I had to reinstall Jaunty! If there are any haters all I can say is checkout the forums & others media to find out that I am not the only one who thinks that this upgrade was a disaster on the same scale as vista.

  • All x.10 versions are worse than their x.04 counterparts.

But just admit it, Karmic is way better than Hardy, which is an LTS.

Anyway, I'm looking forward for Lucid.

  • karmic wasn't that bad. i'm actually using it right now. i honestly don't see what the problem with you people are. and as UltimatePisman said. all .10 releases are bad in general since .10-.04 are basicly beta testing to fix all the problems .04 has. 10.04 is going to be the year of the Linux Desktop

  • @Zerorebels the year of the linux desktop was in 99 and it failed soon after..

  • This guy actually went into space, and skyrocketed the use of Linux,he's my hero!

  • Great I am a karmic-koala user.. ~_^

  • As for the actual speed of contemporary technology development, Linux / Google recent talks about improving communication between developers so that the company can keep up with fast phased kernel releases. And taking in account the very particular needs most software development groups have:

Stable releases every two years is taking free software advantages and putting them in a trash can.

  • @code933k Your bitching about major updates to FREE software?

  • mark- just buy some adverticement on tv and say that its"free" people love free stuff..

  • Comment removed

  • What do you mean? You've always been able to choose your login screen (theme, or actual gdm vs. kdm/xdm/etc)

  • It's completely customizable.

  • I'm gonna skip 9.10 and wait for 10.04 LTS

  • I've got 9.10 today.

    It's a huge improvement on 9.04.

  • Ubuntu 9.10 FTW!
